BlastboomStrice , to asklemmy in What are your favorite open-source games?

Mindustry, SuperTuxKart and Thrive probably

MindTraveller ,

Is Thrive exceptionally similar to Spore?

BlastboomStrice ,

From a quick video I saw, they seem similar indeed, but I haven’t played Thrive enough. I have only made it to a single-cell prokaryotic organism, lol (which is basically very close to the beginning of the game).

GojuRyu ,

I would say yes and no. It is a game about evolution with some similarities but it is very focused on a realistic representation of evolution. This makes it a more complex game than spore and actively encourages many different niches not just agressive, peaceful and mixed as spore did.

Aldo currently they are working on finishong the cell stage and the beginning of the multicellular stage while have more in deapth discussion about the transition between the microscopic and macroscopic phases among other things.

MindTraveller ,

Cool. I think I’ll wait until it’s more complete to buy it.

GojuRyu ,

It’s free, so don’t let that stop you, but it is very fair if you want a more complete experience before trying it out.

(It is paid on steam as a way to suport the game, but free downloads can be found on their website)

I came here to say Zathura (I’ve been actively using it for the last few days going through K&R C for university) but I see everyone else is saying it too. The “d” key will give you dual pane mode iirc. And what I also do is I use “s” to make the pdf match the window width rather than height and then use Capital H and L to read the top and bottom of the pages, and Capital J and K to go to the next 2 pages.

It is stupid to go from one centralised platform to another centralised platform with the same governance model and expect different results.

Same conditions will lead to same results. The problem isn’t caused by the name or logo of Reddit.

Identity of Lemmy? What does that even mean?

a mod from the same instance as the post was made on removed it? Yeah that would retroactively remove them across the instances. And then the last half of my point still applies, don’t agree with them? change instance.

comfyquaker , to asklemmy in Be honest: have you ever lost your temper with a customer service rep? And did it ever help?
@comfyquaker@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, but i felt really bad afterwards. Purchased tickets on American airlines on short notice due to the death of my wife’s close aunt. The trip had a connecting flight and our first flight got delayed by an hour (np plenty of layover time left). then when we land the plane taxied for over an hour giving us about 10 panicking minutes to make the connection, but if we ran we could make it.

we didn’t, The terminal was much farther than expected. in the rush, my wife lost her ID, which added to further frustration. maintaining decent composure up until we go to the AA desk to schedule our alternative flight. The flight we were supposed to go on was the last flight for the day. and the next one wasn’t until next day evening.

well that was not going to work because the funeral was in the morning. We asked if we could fly to another city (equidistant to rural home) but the clerk was really firm on that the flight had to be to my destination. after all, our bags made it there.

that was what cocked the hammer back for me. I asked to speak with someone higher and they gave me a number, and boom i was pretty irked and very rude to the service rep who had the patience of a saint. She did get us on the soonest flight to the other city. My wife was crying with relief and i was sobbing my gratitude and apologizing for my behavior. the Service rep brushed it off like it was business as usual and tells me to have a nice flight.

Aside from having to go purchase new clothes at 1am, we made it to the service a few hours later.

Stuff Made Here - blows my mind with each new video. I can’t even imagine being able to dream up his creations let alone design and create them.

Technology Connections - you didn’t know you were going to love learning about dishwashers and other appliances, but you are.

Foureyes Furniture - interesting custom furniture design and build sequences with very good editing and voiceover.

Marling Baits - Custom fishing lures that vary from lifelike (using real fish skin) to absurd (a lightsaber) to ultra absurd (a block of wood).

Project Farm - head to head comparisons of common tools or other household projects. Very no nonsense and a ton of information packed in quick.

Inheritance Machining - a man documenting rediscovering his passion for machining after inheriting his grandfather’s machine shop. Excellent narrative scriptwriting, recurring video elements, buttery smooth voiceover, and oddly satisfying machining footage.

If it’s not an urgent item, I definitely wait for a sale to buy something. Waiting also helps me reconsider if I realize later on I didn’t really need to buy it anyway. I also like discount coupon hunting. The chance of finding a working coupon is low, but when it works it’s like striking gold.

Solemarc , to programmer_humor in Principal Skinner on Immutable Distros

I’m not against immutable distro’s on principle. I imagine they still have some kinks to iron out, but I haven’t looked in on them for a while.

My opinion on these things is; if it’s a superior system, then it’ll become the new standard, that’s always what happens, and the naysayers are largely irrelevant. Just like computers, smart phones, the internet, etc.

demesisx OP ,
@demesisx@infosec.pub avatar

Yeah. I think they’ll catch on in much the same way that lock files have become the standard in many languages. IMO, it just makes more sense to declare all dependencies atomically. I also think/hope it will supplant our overreliance on Docker containers to achieve these kinds of guarantees (where it actually makes sense or presents undeniable benefits).

Solemarc ,

In the case of docker I’m already at the point where I no longer think it’s necessary. At my current job our stack is JS, PHP and Python. 3 interpreted languages, we then build on Ubuntu and deploy on Ubuntu. I don’t think our project really needs docker, even though it does use it. We also have wasm/wasi prepping to eat Docker’s lunch.

demesisx OP , (edited )
@demesisx@infosec.pub avatar

I’d look into building all of that in a flake just so you can encapsulate (and have a central version control of) all of your dependencies in case something does change.

I’m a bit of a Nix dork but I tend to try and declare my entire dev stack in a flake so it can follow me to every machine. It offers some of the “it works on every machine” guarantees that Docker offers while also forcing the compilation of the stack to happen natively (or at least pulls in some content addressed cache that offers security by being the exact hash for the whole dependency graph). I like that

Here’s how I used the Nix way to declare an interactive Python scraper the other day. With this method, I can lock dependencies between machines as a matter of course without having to use Docker:

<span style="color:#323232;">{
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  description = “Weed Scraper”;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">

</span><span style="color:#323232;">  };
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  outputs = { self, nixpkgs, utils }: utils.lib.eachSystem [“x86_64-linux”] (system: let
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    pkgs = import nixpkgs { system = system; };
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  in rec {

</span><span style="color:#323232;">        pkgs.python3.withPackages (ps: with ps; [ webdriver-manager openpyxl pandas requests beautifulsoup4 websocket-client selenium keyboard ]);
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    };
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    devShell = pkgs.mkShell {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">      buildInputs = [
</span><span style="color:#323232;">        pkgs.chromium

MentalEdge , to asklemmy in Be honest: have you ever lost your temper with a customer service rep? And did it ever help?
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

There’ve been a couple times. I make a distinction between frustration at the company and the person, but sometimes you run into reps that are willfully unhelpful or actively malicious for their own gain.

Two cases come to mind. I’ve had an ISP rep call me about updated prices, who then proceeded to try and sell me a broadband and streaming bundle subscription. I would have gotten a slightly faster speed, plus the streaming BS. Same price as I was already paying.

I specifically asked if unbundled contracts had also been changed, and the dude said “no”. I checked the prices online while still on the call, and the bastard was straight up lying. Without the streaming bundled, the price was lower and came with even more speed. I told him this, and he asked “oh do you want that then?”. I replied “yes, but not if it gives you a sales bonus”, so I hung up and signed up for the new contract via the ISP website.

In the other case I was shopping for jeans, and the store rep repeatedly handed me elastane-ridden skinny jeans a few sizes too small, insisting they’d look better, even as I kept telling him the exact size I wanted, and that I preferred the 100% cotton denim, loose fit jeans. At the fourth pair of skinny jeans I told him to fuck off, and just went through the store myself until I found what I was looking for.
