They need cooking classes, and education around how to properly estimate calories.

Nope. I count every calorie. I’m shooting for 2300 but struggle to hit that. I usually end up at 2600 or more. I cook 80% of my own food. I bake my own bread. I make my own snacks. I know exactly why I’m fat. I can’t stop being hungry. I feel full around 800-900 calories, no matter what I’m eating. (pizza is an exception, because I feel full around 1200 calories, so I avoid it.)

Imagine walking, chest deep, against a slow moving river, every second of the day. You can push against it and it works, but it’s hard. One slip up and you’re floating backwards. You know how to make progress, but it’s takes a shit load of effort and one mistake and you just. Fucking. Can’t. Today.

Add that into everything else wrong with my life. I only have energy for so many things. I have to triage. Kids, wife, bills, personal happiness, other responsibilities. Can’t do them all.

Trust me, I hate myself with every bite, but it’s the only way to shut up that hungry voice.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Thanks.

I do eat fruit. Freaking love it. At least 1 apple a day, they are my fav, and often more. I try to eat veggies as much as possible and skip meat when possible. Fiber hasn’t been a huge focus for me, but it’s worth a shot. I’ve got a refried beans recipe I freaking love. I wish my kids liked it. My veggie chili is also great, but, you know, kids.

What's was your favourite fast food product that unfortunately got retired and never came back?

Here, for a while at McDonald’s there was a 🍔 called “the 1955” and it was the best, big pieces of onion, an special sauce, buns and big piece of beef with bacon (for Europe standards anyways) it disappeared once and came back for an encore only to be removed again and never return.

Dairy queen nerds blizzard. You can fake it with a sonic blast but it’s not the same.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Same. Macos pronounced like tacos is so much better.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Just wait until you get to nuclear chemistry/physics. We use invisible rays, which can kill you, to turn one rock into a different rock, which possibly can kill you. Only if you have studied for many years are you allowed to wield the magic transmutation beams. We create elements not likely seen in nature (possible, but unconfirmed because of their short lives). We create temperatures colder than anywhere else in the universe. We peer at the fundamental forces of nature and then fuck with them.

9/10 of my graduate professors couldn’t profess their way out of a paper bag. The actually good teachers were limited because they didn’t research enough. Fuck grad school.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Every CEO I’ve worked for, I could do the technical part of their job. I couldn’t do the political part because I’m results and data driven. Their prideful fuckers who yell louder and demand satisfaction and wield their ability to fire you. Fuck CEO 's.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

As a former Texas resident: The Texas government can fuck alllllll the way off with that. Design a city that doesn’t need cars and people won’t need to use them. Residents HAVE to use cars because the place is so fucking unfriendly to pedestrians.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

I don’t do betas, but I’m following your progress! I love this.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Going to loud parties with more than 5 people. 1) loud things hurt my ears and give me a headache. 2) can’t hear the person you’re talking to anyways bc of loud. 3) why are there 50 people here? Past 5 ppl, you can’t really talk to people well and the space gets crowded.

Great for you if that’s your thing but not me.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Don’t lie that you’re 25. In my experience, there are 2 ways to handle stupid questions you don’t wanna answer.

  1. agree and amplify with bullshit. “yeah, 40 and unmarried. I’m so lonely. I scream and cry myself to sleep every night. I drink 5 gallons of vodka just to make it thru a shift.”.
  2. change the frame. “why are you so interested in my marital status? Are you looking for someone? I’m flattered but you’re not my type.”.
GrayBackgroundMusic ,

And it dismisses the time component of self hosting. It’s not going to be zero.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

I don’t unless people ask. Most people don’t care, so I don’t start with the assumption they’re going to listen. Part of it, I realize now, it’s because I info dump. Wish I had known that before middle age.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

I’m not in software dev but 8 years seems a long time to make a game like this. I love the game and play it daily, but it’s not that deep. It’s has 5 maps and 20 guns and 2 kinds of enemies. That doesn’t doesn’t seem like an 8 year dev time.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Probably to politely invite contrasting opinions and experiences from people in the field

Exactly. “I’m no expert, but this feels weird.”

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Why do people always feel like their inexperience on a topic is relevant?

Because this feels unusual but I’m not an expert and I can’t say whether that amount of time is truly usual or not. I’m in manufacturing and when people say what I said, then it’s usually as an invitation to discuss the topic.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

I forgot where I heard it.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Claiming not a lot of work was done

No, just the opposite. It’s a ton of work for not a lot of results. It’d be like saying it took you 3 days to make a sandwich. That’s wayyyyyy longer than I’d expect it to take, with the caveat, I’m not a professional sandwich maker.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Like you know that Doom 2016 was the 3rd complete from scratch redo from what they originally started working on after Doom 3, right?

No, I had no idea.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

That’s what I thought I did, though I implied it instead of ask directly.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Hahahahahaha

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

I’m all for it. Makes them easier see. FOR SUPER EEEAAARRRTTTHHH

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

When I say they’re overrated, I mean I don’t understand why they’re so popular. They’re not bad but they’re not that good, either. I don’t understand the praise lauded on them. It’s too much relative to their quality.

I can understand if someone loves them in their time. For example, Nirvana was absolutely amazing in their time. However, it’s been 30 years and that sound is a lot more mainstream, but in their day, they were breaking new ground.

But my kids age? Why do people think they’re that good?

It's out now! The prologue for my solo project, a roguelike tower defense, is live. Check it out. (store.steampowered.com)

About the game: A tower defense action roguelike where you control a single tower to fight against hordes of aliens coming from all directions. Pick your tower, equip up to 4 skills, and choose from a variety of traits and items to craft powerful builds that lead you to victory....

Pressure canning food

So me and my dad were talking about pressure canning and how it’s very uncommon. I’ve never talked to anyone irl that pressure cans, maybe some water bath canning but that’s it. I wonder why it’s so uncommon? You can get a pressure canner for less than 150$ and it’s incredibly useful....

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

It’s not really necessary in modern society. I do canning and other preservation hobbies. It’s easier to buy it. Unless you’re really interested in customizing your food, which is why I do it, it’s easier to buy it.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Are you cherry picking the good games out of older libraries? I find people do that a lot when remembering. It’s a survivorship bias thing. The good ones get remembered more and the bad one forgotten, so they seem like the population is better.

GrayBackgroundMusic , (edited )

The cm’s have literally said it’s Sony. Why would there be speculation that it’s steam?

Edit: I misunderstood. I meant that the whole initiative was from Sony. Kroxx was talking about the delisting in specific. I don’t have any info on that.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

To be fair there is a lot of speculation that this is actually entirely from steam’s side not sony or arrowhead.

Oh, that the delisting is Steam side? I thought you meant in general. My bad. I’ll edit that.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

I misunderstood. I meant that the whole initiative was from Sony. Kroxx was talking about the delisting in specific. I don’t have any info on that.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

requires ~10 times the amount of crops per calorie compared to just eating the crops directly

Kind of, kind of not. If fed corn, yes. If pasture raised, no. Humans can’t eat grass. Cows convert grass into food.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

I’ve had a beard for 10+ years now. I was going thru a really rough period and didn’t do much hygiene. Once I got out of that rut, I kinda liked it. My spouse, who initially said they didn’t like beards, complained when I shaved it.

I’ve always wanted one. I have a baby face and it makes me look older and people take me more seriously.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

You had a different childhood than mine. It was code for “they’re a moron”.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Same thing with crime and basic needs. It costs less to give people housing, food, etc, than to staff the police and infrastructure for jails. Once you realize that, you realize it’s not about the cost. It’s about the cruelty.

Nowadays? I’ve never enjoyed mobile gaming. Every time I try, there’s been an absurd paywall or monetization. Once that strikes, I’m out.

Do you practice self care?

Hello. Let’s talk about self-care. Who practices self-care regularly? I’ve been making an absolute effort to practice self-care, and it’s definitely improving my mood. I floss, meditate, do qigong, breathwork, etc. Yes, flossing is self-care, take care of yo teefs. What does everyone do for self-care? Bonus question: Where...

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Flossing is self care? I group that under “maintenance”. It’s the same level as going to the bathroom, washing your hands, etc. Self care, to me, is taking time that could be “productive” or doing something required and instead going for a walk or reading a book. It’s a positive act that’s not self damaging. Eating too much ice cream is not self care, but a bite might be.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Silicones are also polymers. Polymer means many-chains. Any repeated chemical unit is a polymer. Another example is PLA (poly lactic acid) is a non-petroleum based polymer. It’s literally lactic acid.

Are you trying to say that silicone isn’t a petroleum based product?

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Lol I haven’t seen that image in decades! Hahahaha red physics intro book?

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Assuming you’re not trolling, yes. The backfire effect is a proven psychologically studied phenomenon. Arguing at people with facts and logic and aggression tends to reinforce their original beliefs. effectiviology.com/backfire-effect-facts-dont-cha…

Ironically, telling you this will likely not convince you due to said effect.

GrayBackgroundMusic ,

Noooo how dare you prove me wrong!

Lol thanks for the info.

'Vortex Cannon vs Drone' - Mark Rober shows off tech from a "defense technology company that specializes in advanced autonomous systems". That seems bad

I’ve enjoyed Mark Rober’s videos for a while now. They are fun, touch on accessible topics, and have decent production value. But this recent video isn’t sitting right with me...
