Some types of fusion can bypass steam generation and use what’s creatively called Direct Energy Conversion. If the fusion products are charged particles they can be passed through a magnetic field to separate them based on charge and collected onto plates. When you look at the electric potential between the plates you’ve effectively created a voltage, no steam necessary. It’s also theoretically possible to do the same with some types of fission products too.

anothercatgirl ,

I thought they take advantage of the velocity of the charged ions to magnetically transfer power to electromagnetic coils around the reactor.

Rossphorus ,

There’s a whole bunch of mechanisms, largely depending on the fusion architecture and the atoms being fused. For tokamak reactors the circular nature lends itself well to what you describe, though usually it’s energy being imparted into the ions to keep them contained and away from the walls. In the ‘standard’ deuterium-tritium fusion model (the easiest to perform) fusion produces a helium nucleus and a neutron, where the neutron gets most of the energy. Since a neutron can’t be contained by magnets it impacts the chamber walls. This heat is wicked away by, you guessed it, cooling water which turns into steam. In order to use a direct energy conversion strategy you need a fusion reaction that produces no neutrons, but we’re not there yet.

This is just somebody’s grimy phone camera seeing streaks of light around the bright flashes. You get these when you wipe your lense carelessly with linear movements. It’s a funny coincidence that the two flashes happen to allign in the direction of these streaks.

You can see the same effect in the bottom left corner of the screen when the view briefly pans left, around what might be an off screen streetlight.

@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

Wow. The terms “nuked” and “bricked” seem to have lost the meaning I grew up with. What you provided is just a simple error.

It says dependency problem. Have you installed the dependency? It says:

Package linux-image-6.9.7+bpo-amd64-unsigned is not installed. … linux-headers-6.9.7+bpo-amd64 depends on linux-image-6.9.7+bpo-amd64 (= 6.9.7-1bpo12+1) | linux-image-6.9.7+bpo-amd64 -unsigned (= 6.9.7-1bpo12+1);

Maybe you’re doing too much at once. What happens when you just install the one kernel?

<span style="color:#323232;">sudo apt install linux-image-6.9.7+bpo-amd64
</span>

Or maybe try to uninstall the new kernel and its headers. Make sure you have dkms installed and run the apt fix again.

Smorty OP , (edited )

When trying to install the one kernel I get exactly the same message as the first image in the post. The first error hints at an error in a posts installation script, which I have had issues with before. I used to delete these script to get over errors aaand that worked fine for some time. In case there has been some change in the error I’m getting, I haven’t picked up on it yet. Either way, here’s the output

https://files.catbox.moe/shx70q.jpg

EDIT: At the top of the message it says " Newest version already installed" so it seems to be blocking itself? Like I’m trying to install a package and it’s like -But I need that package to build this one-

zelifcam , (edited )
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

I used to delete these script to get over errors aaand that worked fine for some time.

I can’t think of one time that I’ve done that in 20 years outside of repackaging applications for work because of crappy vendor supplied packages.

And you’re sure dkms and the headers are installed?

In situations like this, if bad enough I would usually temporarily remove mentioned packages until the apt fix works cleanly again and then reinstall whatever I was trying to do. But you’re saying you have removed post install scripts and manipulated packages? Hmm that seems like trouble.

I’m positive if I was infront of the terminal I could help you out, but I’m starting work for the day. Maybe someone else has a better idea. Sorry bro. But on a positive note, your system is certainly not beyond repair. This seems trivial with a little work and maybe someone who sees the issue better than I right now.

For others taking a look…. What was the command run before the apt fix?

Then today In started up my PC and this was what I got, a black screen with a blinking white cursor. The apt-fix-broken is just something I picked up on during my many times I had to fix my distro… So that was one of the first things i tried after trying the startxcommand.

You left out the NVIDIA card part. This is super important. So you have two kernels in a bad state and the NVIDIA driver is probably not building out.

You’ve got a chicken and egg issue.

This isn’t a technical answer but simply a generalization of what probably needs to happen.

I would start over on whatever kernel situation you have going.

First uninstall the NVIDIA driver.

Then remove that unsigned kernel and its headers. Use the force option if necessary.

Ensure dkms, the base kernel and its headers are installed.

Reboot using standard kernel and then install nvidia-dkms package. Reboot.

It’s tough to tell you exactly what needs to be done because I’m not really sure what kind of damage you did or what the full extent of the errors are. You might need some force options or whatever but generally that’s all that needs to happen. YOU do not have a NVIDIA driver built for whatever kernel you’re using.

Smorty OP ,

You were entirely correct. Thank you very much for your response, I really was missing the header files for the kernel so the driver couldn’t interact with the system (as far as I can tell). The nouveau driver automatically kicked in on first reboot after installing the header files and I’m now downloading the dkms package again (using Gnome).

Deme , (edited )

Private weather station?

It’s pretty much impossible to make reliable forecasts based on the data of a singular weather station. The initial data comes in from a variety of sources including satellites, radars, surface observation stations (weather stations) and upper air soundings around the globe. All of the above are maintained by public sector organizations who collaborate and share the data because the weather is an inescapably global thing. During WW2 the Germans actually set foot in Canada to set up a weather station in an attempt to spread the coverage of their observation network.

Nowadays all that data is used as inputs for numerical weather prediction models, running on supercomputers in the basements of meteorological institutes and agencies. Big global ones like ECMWF and GFS are used pretty much by all meteorologists around the world, who look at those and other smaller, more local models. They compare the different forecasts and critically evaluate the probabilities of different outcomes. They apply their own judgement selecting the most credible raw forecast and then edit that if needed. All in all, it’s a very global effort.

At least where myself and @Kusimulkku are from, meteorologists at the public broadcasting company (where that title is a requirement for getting the job) collaborate closely with their colleagues at the national meteorological institute. Their job is to comprehend the situation as presented by the institute, decide which bits of it are important, and then boil that down into a smooth and easy to understand presentation.

If a weather reporter isn’t an actual meteorologist, then there is an actual meteorologist behind the scenes who made the presentation for the reporter to present.
