Wild_Mastic , to asklemmy in Any restaurants you know that are reducing plastic?

My local traditional chinese restaurant (basically only take away) uses paper, cardboard and wood for cups, sticks or cutlery. Also paper bags.

And the food is delicious!

Found this, in German : lemmy.ml/post/14167419 which I believe mentioned the web front-end is broken.

Not that I do it myself, but I belive with an SDR dongle you could contribute to both aircraft tracking and naval tracking. Big communities out there for this at least.

@tyler@fedia.io avatar

yup :) Already doing that.

lemmyingly ,

Hopefully you’re not feeding globe.adsbexchange.com

It was an open community and then the person who ran the server sold it to a corporation for over a million dollars. I believe the community strongly dislikes the person and spun up their own website and server globe.airplanes.live

Good to know!

AmbiguousProps ,

I feed to adsb.fi for this reason.

lemmyingly ,

I’ve got nothing against the owner of adsb.fi, but the owner pulled their data out of the community and wanted to go solo… or that’s the stories I’ve heard, which might be biased against the owner.

Cupcake1972 ,

Is the adsb.fi site connected to it in any way or are the two separate communities?

lemmyingly ,

Adsb.fi and airplanes.live were once in the same Discord server and worked together for several months rebuilding the community when adsbexchange sold out. I believe the original plan was to create a community where no one person could sell out and rug pull all of the donated data again, but I believe the owner of adsb.fi, Samuli, decided to take his data out of the community and go solo.

I’ve only heard one side of the story and so it might be biased against Samuli.

I would join his Discord server as well but I’ve used all of my server slots. It’s a bit ridiculous of Discord to limit the servers a person can join, especially those who pay $10 for Discord nitro.

tyler OP ,

I was picky about the ones I feed to.. community ones I feed to are adsb.fi, adsb.lol, airplanes.live, plane.watch, opensky-network, and on the commercial side, flight radar 24 and fightaware, both give premium access for feeding, which is nice.

Inductor , to selfhosted in Self-Hosting to help a community?

If you decide to set up an SDR for ADS-B, you might want to consider setting up a WebSDR with something like OpenWebRX. This would let people listen to all the signals in the bandwidth that you set.

If you’re interested, receiverbook.de is a list of most WebSDRs.

That is neat.

I host wikis for local advocacy work. I plan to host other static sites, and I’m building a tool to get better transit schedules in a simple webpage. Hosting Mobilizon is on my list to do as well.

Zippit , to nostupidquestions in Do any ATMs in Belgium support balance inquiries?

I know Belfius still has a few ATMs inside the building, they do show your balance. During the day you can enter without swiping your card, but after certain hours you have to your card to get in.

Also, they have the banking app so you can always check your balance and do payments as long as you have a debit or credit card. Unless you have a special expenses card when in debt collection I think.

It’s been a while, but when I was in college and right after, I used Amazon Mechanical Turk with some useful plugins and a helpful subreddit (HitsWorthTurkingFor I think it was called, not sure if its active). Prolific used to be good, but I’m sure that’s changed a lot since its early days.

Irony: I clicked on this post because an unemployed friend of mine recently had their mechanical turk account suspended for no clear reason. They're still waiting on the appeal process two months later...

For anyone considering this work, you should also be prepared for your "employers" to randomly reject your submitted work and deny you pay. Good times.

RememberTheApollo_ , to showerthoughts in Why don't low birth-rate countries make immigration to their country easier?

The low birth rates are a concern because they need the bodies to generate revenue so they can take care of old people who will lean on government services.

Why should you care about population decline? Fewer people are good for the climate, but the economic consequences are severe. In the 1960s, there were six people of working age for every retired person. Today, the ratio is three-to-one. By 2035, it will be two-to-one.

Some say we must learn to curb our obsession with growth, to become less consumer-obsessed, to learn to manage with a smaller population. That sounds very attractive. But who will buy the stuff you sell? Who will pay for your healthcare and pension when you get old?

weforum.org/…/birthrates-declining-globally-why-m…

Ok, so what does that have to do with your question…

What age group tends to be the biggest voting bloc, the most xenophobic, the most nationalistic…? Old people. Get those foreign people off my lawn, keep those foreign drug dealers, thieves, and layabouts out of my country.

Then there’s exploitation of foreign labor to undercut wages and work rules of citizens of the country the labor is being imported into.

I’m sure there’s more, but basically it’s a hefty dose of xeonphobia and nationalism along with groups not wanting to literally lose jobs to someone who will do it for a lot less.
