Because libre office is not compatible with many others. You can open it sure but there’s no guarantee that opening .doc or .docx will have broken formatting. Not good for those in the academia or workplace where formatting are strictly enforce.

tweXit does have a nice ring to it. Made me laugh 😂

Same. @squizzy, I don’t like microblogging in general either. I was raised in the golden era of forums (the days of phpBB and vBulletin). My twitter account hasn’t been touched for years now.

As an iOS user and long time Firefox user (never switched to chrome in my life) I feel jealous. But one can only hope that we too in the APPLE walled garden won’t be left behind. Though I understand that it would be a long shot. :(

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

True. It takes a big chance to switch browsers for some. And there may be learning curves, but being intentional about our internet and app use goes a long way to saving headaches in the future. The early investment (ie learning a more open source and free, even FOSS software) will help mitigate loss in case a profit driven company changes or “pivots” to a new direction.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Hmmm, on the bright side, with lemmy going mainstream maybe some of this culture (including privacy and FOSS) becomes more and more openly discussed.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

You can still download firefox on iOS. Snowhaze for really sensitive stuff. Safari for anything else. Using different browsers for different purposes help defend against profiling.

I personally use firefox for work stuff, firefox focus for banking, safari for personal and snowhaze for ehem… err adult stuff.

Frostwolf OP ,

If you use a password manager like bitwarden, there’s no need to enter all your logins. I guess that’s why I’m a bit browser agnostic. I use different browsers for different purposes. And I don’t have to worry about remembering my passwords with bitwarden.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Firefox is the least evil as far as I know, given its non profit roots. Chrome is owned by google, Opera by a chinese company. Firefox is the closest we can get to a FOSS browser.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure why it’s weird, it’s just reddit but open source?

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

If you can, I highly recommend using a password manager like bitwarden with multiple backups spread on local password manager or local drive. Think of it this way, what happens if firefox or chrome were to suffer catastrophic failure? At least with a password manager, you can reinstall another browser and carry on as usual. :)

I think the history and bookmarks are separate. Only the engine is the same. For safari, enabling adguard and other extensions does wonders for privacy. :)

And what if your google account stops working? What if it’s hacked? What if google goes bankrupt? What if google discontinues chrome or remove the password features? What if Google follows reddit and starts charts charging you for your passwords? So many what ifs. So much power to give to a for profit company.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

There are instances dedicated to other languages, but because they are new, and has not a lot of people, they won’t push at the top of your feed. The best thing for now is to help those instances grow by contributing to the instance and communities. As more activity sprouts, more and more specialized communities and instances will get pushed to the top.

As a start, you can select Hot or New rather than active and see if there are specialized regional instances. Or try directly searching for it.

If not start your own community in the language you desire. Bear in mind that lemmy only has 200k users. And most are probably from the US. So you’ll likely see more mainstream communities and in English.

If that’s still not enough, the best I can advise is to wait until it matures. The more mainstream it gets the more lesser known communities and regional instances can develop or start.

I’m optimistic. So many apps are developing at an astonishing rate. Recall that third party apps offer better experience than official reddit. Given time, third party apps will do the same too.

I wouldn’t count on Microsoft’s security:

www.npr.org/…/china-hack-us-government-microsoft

If this can happen to governments using microsoft, it can happen to little guys using microsoft.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

It might be a niche yeah, but it won’t be when a lawsuit looms. It won’t be when Data Privacy Laws come knocking. People underestimate the value of privacy even though virtually any job has privacy as its most basic requirements. May it be medical records, banks, NDAs, contracts, even the most basic of tasks, has some form of privacy stipulations in it.

As someone pursuing a career in health care I became more and more concerned because some store patient files and notes in unsecured text files/apps like notion, google docs and even excel. I’m sure other jobs and employment has their own privacy issues as well.

Privacy is a niche at face value but so many people underestimate its value. When everything they say or store online and even offline can be hacked, tracked or exploited, anything can be a potential lawsuit without taking the necessary precautions.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Firefox is no less slower than chrome to me, imho. At least it doesn’t struggle as much. Chrome with 20 tabs lags while firefox works. Maybe there’s something in your extensions that’s causing slowdowns?

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

I agree they’re overkill. But there are sites that detect the adblocker and I just experiment which one they don’t detect. Most of the time, adguard does amazing. But some websites only adblock is not detected. So it’s a cat and mouse game for me. :) I installed them all just in case and activate and deactivate depending on which sites I am on.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but then that would be supporting and enabling Google’s standards.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

You may be right. Being on lemmy tends to skew perspectives a little bit.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Any browser really. I missed the browser wars of old where everyone is free to use and defend their browsers.

Frostwolf ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

That’s actually a better outcome, quarantine the crazies in twitter and/or reddit while the mainstream happens in the fediverse.

Frostwolf ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a sad commentary of our society as a whole. :( but still, the optimist in me wishes it were reversed.

Frostwolf ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Alien civilizations? No. No evidence to support this. But alien life form like bacteria and other organisms? Possible, but still, evidence is scant. It’s difficult for some to accept that we are alone but the lack of evidence suggests a very strong possibility that there’s nothing out there.

Frostwolf ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know if this is counted but it’s also perfectly reasonable to have accounts on defederated instances. So if this is counted that might inflate the numbers a bit.

Frostwolf ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Have a separate account on burggit.moe and lemmynsfw for this exact reason. Plus a lot of alt accounts on instances that are defederated (different usernames for each).

Frostwolf ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not so much as a deal breaker. The green bubbles means you’re using regular text, hence in some countries, there may be big charges as opposed to blue which is kind of like your regular instant messaging where it’s free as long as you have wifi or data.

Frostwolf ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

I was a bit surprised myself. I’m a lurker on reddit but addicted to lemmy. Can’t explain it. But I’m glad I’m here to witness this. :)

What’s the fediverse’s answer to email? And everything else we use?

The talk about “enshittification” made me think of the very email we use for the instances we signed up and instantly, it paints a grim picture. One of my account used gmail to sign up. Some proton mail. It reminds me that these too are companies beholden to their shareholders....

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Oh wow. I didn’t know this was a thing. Will check this out for sure.

They often provide free services to its members such as email, website/gopher/gemini hosting, coding tools, and many other useful utilities.

This has me really really interested. Thanks for giving more awareness to this :)

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

I agree, the free option is very serviceable as a backup personal email. Though there will always be a part of me that is skeptical if these free services will disappear one day.

That said, I wouldn’t put everything in one basket. As I recall, their VPN is slow and their cloud storage has no mobile apps. Though that might have changed since I last tried the Proton suite.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

If you look at my original post I mentioned I have proton mail. What I wasn’t aware was if there were free providers as in lemmy.world where it’s free, without subscription, or free from any profitization.

It was discussed heavily in the comments that self hosting only brings problem.

I also conceded that there are no free alternatives apart from hosting your own. That’s why I agreed that protonmail is the next best thing. What I didn’t agree with it is its subscription model and hence its lack of protection against being profit-driven.

That too, I conceded. Someone mentioned tildes.team and I may start looking into that next.

Tldr: I understand that there are email providers available but most are still owned by companies, hence there will still be a time when we have to pay for them, as opposed to say, donation and community-driven.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

It is unfortunate that we have to choose between the two. The idea of FOSS should be not paying and not being the product.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

That’s an interesting take. If reddit can claim victory, it would be a hollow one, even if the remaining mods do cave.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you for explaining. I grew up on php-based forums and websites. So Rust is pretty new to me. TBH, I haven’t heard of it until Lemmy. :)

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Image now replaced with a cropped one. I didn’t want complaints of an edited/altered screenshot so I didn’t alter it at first.

Frostwolf OP ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

You’ve probably set your feed to show active posts rather than new or something else. This has been getting some comments as far as I can see, so that might have pushed it higher in your feed.

Is it possible to block a whole instance on Lemmy?

There’s a lot of instances using a language I don’t understand. I’ve been using Jerboa, and the only option I’ve seen is to block communities individually every time I come across one, but the popular ones have multiple communities (are they even called communities? My past reddit brain keeps calling them subreddits). So...

Frostwolf ,
@Frostwolf@lemmy.world avatar

Unfortunately, no as far as I know. I personally think this should be the answer rather than Defederation. I’m not sure where to make a feature request for lemmy but I’m not sure why this hasn’t been suggested before.
