Some sort of chemical reaction. My best guess would be a drop of CA glue that degraded the material over time.

If I may ask as an edc lurker, I love the idea of edc, but how do you carry so many useful gadgets? If I put stuff in my phone pocket then it scratches up my phone. If I put stuff in my key/wallet pocket then it unlocks my car randomly. I would carry my lathe in my pocket if it was feasible.

dedsec doesn’t appear to be a registered trademark in the US at this time.

edit: added the word registered

nezbyte ,

Not a lawyer, but there are lots of intricacies to this. You can own a trademark without having it be a registered trademark. Registration is expensive and then you are expected to actively defend use of your trademark. Be prepared to pay lawyers to send cease-and-desist letters to parties using your trademark for financial profit. Not to mention you have to be/become a business engaging in interstate commerce using this trademark.

The instructions for my smoke detector recommend spraying the openings with compressed air regularly.

nezbyte ,

Not frequently, but weather extremes and natural disasters do cause outages. I was without power for a couple weeks after a tornado came through my neighborhood. Now I own a generator.

nezbyte ,

I appreciate your question, it is nice to see things from a different perspective. My generator is definitely a luxury that hopefully can remain off. Most utilities focus on uptime and this generator ad is a weird cash grab by preying on people’s fear. My local natural gas company did a similar thing where they strongly encouraged us to buy buried pipe damage coverage through them. If a pipe is damaged on your property then you have to pay a contractor to fix it.

American suburbia is an odd thing. The core metro is usually well planned and stays online due to buried cables. However, a lot of old suburbs were built with overhead lines. Then expansion never slowed down and the cities grew around the old suburbs. Many of the modern suburbs now have underground power, but even they may be fed by overhead poles outside the community. However, other parts of America could be different where they have hurricanes or earthquakes regularly.

Do you have an auxiliary power connector hooked up to the HBA? Here is the manual.

Play slowed down African elephant noises on the stereo as you drive on wet roads.

Can confirm. My cats request this jam be played to them on the daily.

It’s a shame that Mythbusters isn’t around to turn this into a shark week special. I’m pretty sure the myth would be busted and the only risk would be of the batteries catching fire after the shark bites one.

nezbyte ,

you’ve never had 3am Waffle House chocolate milk?

nezbyte ,

indeed

Krystal appears to have the bite size chili dogs, not White Castle.

I highly recommend checking with local vets rather than an animal hospital if your pet has time. Our vet extended my cat’s life multiple times over the years for a fraction of the price. Kidney/bladder surgery for stone removal was less than $1k including a week of room and board. Hands down, the best money I’ve ever spent.

Modular ports would be great. I’d love to have two USB ports on a phone rather than a USB and headphone jack.

nezbyte ,

Since you mentioned joysticks, Joystick Gremlin is a great piece of software if you want to take the customization up a notch and have full sensitivity curves for your joysticks. You can even have modes dedicated to landing vs normal flight at different sensitivity levels.

Unless every instance goes down we will just call it a partial outage.

On Wednesday, Maine’s legislature passed a bill joining a compact to commit all of their electoral votes, regardless of who won in their individual state, to whichever candidate won the national popular vote.

The TI-92 wasn’t allowed on standardized tests due to the qwerty keyboard layout making it be classified as a computer device in the US. The TI-89 has the same CAS functionality as a TI-92 Plus, but in a standardized test approved physical form factor.

Snapraid to a single drive works well if you are fine with daily snapshots of up to 6 drives.

Highly recommend The Idea Factory by Jon Gertner. It is a fantastic book about Bell Labs in its heyday.

Finally got a UPS

Keeping tradition with doing things backwards, I’ve finally got a UPS for the rack (mounted in the bottom of the stack). Got a PowerWalker VI 2200R. Its a 2U unit which is all the space I’ve got left in the rack. Decent price and decent I/O with USB, serial and a slot-in for network expansion + 4 IEC outputs. Its powering...

nezbyte ,

Great setup! I’ve heard that it is best practice to keep a little distance between servers/drives and the UPS just to be safe from vibrations or EMI. Does anyone know if this is still something to worry about?

nezbyte ,

no clue, mine doesn’t seem to vibrate. just one of the things that popped up when I searched for why they used to warn against it. was hoping to get a “back in my day” comment explaining why.

MergerFS + Snapraid is a really nice way to turn ext4 mounts into a single entry point NAS. OpenMediaVault has some plugins for setting this up. Performance wise it will max out the drive of whichever one you are using and you can use cheap mismatched drives.

nezbyte ,

I don’t think it does at this high level. Rural states still have high population centers of varying political and socioeconomic statuses. Tennessee and others have a crime problem along the Mississippi River iirc. There is just so much context lost in a state level generalization.

nezbyte ,

Depends on what your server is running. Multiple GPUs, HDDs, and other fun items start to add up to well over 100W. I justify it by using it to keep my 3d printer filament dry.

nezbyte ,

Agreed, don’t do what I do if you value your power bill. To be fair, my network switch pulls more power than my cobbled together server anyhow.

nezbyte ,

For sure, most screens in cars are dangerously implemented. My 2015 Mini has a transparent HUD so I don’t have to look away from the road. No touchscreen either. Long live tactile interfaces in cars.
