The “Con” in both is from a Latin root meaning together.

The “test” in contest is from Latin testis, meaning “witness”, from a root meaning “three” (as in, a third party).

The word test is from Latin testum meaning earthen pot, because metals could be tested for quality by melting them in such a pot.

Etymology is super interesting to me.

Did the premise of an entity approaching you only when it's not being viewed originate with Doctor Who's Weeping Angels?

The Weeping Angels apparently originated with Steven Moffat seeing a statue of a weeping angel in a structure in a cemetery and returning later to find out it was gone. At least according to this RadioTimes article. They first appeared in 2007 in the episode Blink....

Despite what crazy right wing pundits say, “Xmas” is Christian. Chi (Χ) is the first letter of “Christ” written in the Greek alphabet. (Χριστός)

If there was more than one Illinois, would they be called Illinoises or Illinoi?

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a word in English that ends with “is” while being singular, only plurals and uncountables come to mind, so I can’t really follow the examples of other words. What makes it even weirder, I’m not sure how to pronounce Illinoises… Would it be as written, or as if an Illinois was...

Now mister Nomad, you say your prime function is to sterilize imperfections. That makes sense, that makes sense.

Just one more thing. You’ve mistaken the captain here for your creator. If I’m not wrong, that would mean you’re imperfect as well, right?

Whoa, is that the Ren Fest in Larkspur? I spent many summer days there when I lived in Colorado.

Or is there a standardized fake castle gate you can order premade?

One option is to pickle them. Even without canning them, which is a whole process to itself, you can put pretty much any vegetables in water, salt, and vinegar and they’ll preserve in the fridge for much longer.

Just search whatever vegetable you have plus “pickled” and you’ll find recipes.

Edit: you can pickle fruits, too!

I assume it’s referring to Oreo, the real life raccoon who was a model for Rocket.

I don’t know if it’s the “right” thing to do, if there’s ever one right thing… But I usually offer something that validates their feelings, like “That really sucks,” or “They sound like a jerk.” Only if it’s someone I know well and I can read what they’re looking for, I might then comfort, offer advice, or talk about something to cheer them up.

99.9% of Americans have never tasted a Blackcurrant or Gooseberry. For nearly a century, the US government conducted a war on currants and gooseberries. The History Guy YT (www.youtube.com)

I remember my Grandmother having Gooseberry in her garden and joking that they would get her in more trouble than the still she ran on her property.

From the US. The first time I tried jelly babies, the black currant flavored ones blew me away. I’ve had the real thing now as well (in jam form), and it’s so so good.
