I mean, the feds still read this and know who you are. Probably wise not to explicitly endorse assassinations.

Explicitly.

It’s not illegal if you change the laws… 🙃

I know numerous small artists who use copyright to protect their work and get paid when people use their music in streams/videos, take down misuse of their graphic work, work with publishers to license their work, etc.

Copyright works fairly well for small creators.

Of course corporations abuse it like every other law. We don’t say that home ownership should be abolished because landlords are shitty.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

That I can get behind!

Right now the law allows them to basically say, “oops, we kinda thought we owned that. Our bad.” And walk away only to issue an identical takedown the next week.

I have a video series that gets a DMCA claim on the intro (that I made) every single time that I have to submit a counter claim. It’s always overturned, but I have zero recourse to stop it from happening.

Mickey is kinda a video game character if you think about it.

I mean, IP isn’t all bad. I can’t start selling p*ss in a bottle and label it with Coca-Cola branding. I’d get sued into oblivion. In this particular case, that would be a good thing. It also means that if you find a rat in your coke, you can sue CocaCola. If there were no IP, everyone could make it and it would be almost impossible to know where it came from.

There would also be no widely distributed film, TV, music, books, etc. Do you really want to live in a world where WattPad is the engine of literature?

@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry it was just a joke. I didn’t think I needed a /j, but I should know better. Poe’s law.

Edit: just gonna leave this here as proof of Mickey’s hardcore game roots…

Games? Name five great FOSS games.

Games and other media that are labor intensive to make and trivial to copy will not exist without some form of copyright.

Live music and theater will still exist, as well as physical works like paintings and sculptures. But say goodbye to professional books, films, games, comics, and scripted television (I guess we’d go back to sports and live variety shows). No more professional journalists, nature photography, audiobooks, podcasts…

Trademark is a form of intellectual property but never mind that. Who do you think is paying for all those indie games and films?

Sure, we can talk about some major reforms, but you seem to be fine throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

ceasefire

Which Hamas broke on Oct 7, despite loosening restrictions on Gaza, then again on Nov 30.

blockade

Which Egypt and Israel instated with international support because Hamas even turns humanitarian aid into weapons.

Apartheid

Palestinian Israelis serve in every level of government and civic life.

In the USA, there are 3 African-American senators out of 100. There have been only 3 African American governors in history.

There are 9 ethnic minority members of French parliament out of 577, despite making up about 15% of the population.

Ethnic minorities represent 10% of the UK Parliament, despite being 16% of the population.

In Israel, there are 10 seats in the Knesset representing Arab/Palestinian parties out of 120.

Underrepresentation of minorities is a widespread global problem that is not limited to Israel. Pretending that the the rest of the world is some kind of post-racial utopia, while only Israel experiences racial inequality is cynical at best.

So it should be okay to target Jewish students in Pennsylvania with harassment and call for the genocide of Jews because of what the government of Israel is doing?

Cool, cool, cool.

gedaliyah OP , (edited )
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you. The article is about students having a hard time and being targeted with harassment and abuse. The top comment focused on condemning a war happening thousands of miles away.

That is incredibly insensitive.

Then someone will respond that the insensitivity is technically not against the rules, since it is technically connected to the topic.

Maduro’s land grab in Guyana is a cynical ploy to hang on to power in Venezuela (www.theguardian.com)

It also seems clear that the dispute, which centres on control of the Essequibo region in western Guyana, a sparsely populated area the size of Greece that constitutes about two-thirds of Guyanese territory, is mostly about oil. In 2015, the US oil giant, ExxonMobil, discovered a big field off Guyana’s coast, largely within...

Excellent point! Also rather partial to “Love your neighbor as yourself” from Leviticus.

Also, I think you meant to say “Christian,” not “religious.” There are billions of religious people who are not interested in the Christian scriptures. I honestly do not mean to be pedantic, but that kind of cultural erasure is not helpful to minority religions.

It’s no longer a conspiracy theory. It’s a conspiracy fact.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Why are the people calling for a ceasefire always calling on only Israel to cease? Hamas has continued fighting, killing, and bombing Israel as well. They are the ones who ended the ceasefire by refusing to continue releasing hostages (including babies) and launching multiple attacks.

Everyone wants this war to end. Hamas could surrender and release the hostages and there’d be peace tomorrow. Instead Hamas has determined to fight to the last one remains alive.

I get that they view Israel as “theirs” (from the river to the sea means all of Israel and Palestine). But do they really think Israel will just be gone one day?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

So what does a ceasefire mean? If Hamas is not releasing the hostages and continues to fire rockets and bullets at Israel how is that a ceasefire?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Hamas wants to release the hostages as part of a ceasefire agreement. That’s why they took them in the first place.

Why did they stop releasing them while there was a already a ceasefire? No one has answered my original question. I’m just trying to understand that.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Just a point of clarification: Israel does not hold hostages. Everyone in Israeli custody is suspected, charged, or convicted of a crime.

Some have argued that Israel’s criminal justice system is severely broken, and that it’s very biased, and even that it is rife with wrongful convictions and lack of due process. But it is counterfactual to say that Israel is holding hostages. No one is held by the State of Israel as a civilian who was captured and held on threat of life with the purpose of being released in exchange for a political goal. You will never hear Hamas supporters name even one.

People can twist and torture the definition of the word “hostage” to the point that it becomes meaningless in an attempt to establish some type of moral equivalency, but it will never be objectively true.

This news has been reported for months in increasingly sensationalist headlines. The short version is that you only have to worry if you are a slow typist in a high-espionage setting in which your system is physically secure so no one could use a physical or digital keylogger attack, but also has a sample of your typing and audio recording access to your computing area.

gedaliyah ,

Others here have answered the basic questions. However, an even better answer would come from talking about it with your family. If for some reason you are not interested or able to discuss it with your parents, what about with cousins or grandparents?

The whole article exists in Apple-land. Like a tacky stereotype of Apple users, the author never acknowledges it, treating everything Apple as the “default.”

I don’t have time for articles that consider the 3.5 billion android users to be “outliers.” C’mon, it’s 2023.

Unpopular opinion, but video support is one of the largest hurdles to broader fediverse adoption. Every significant social media platform (including messaging) supports video and animated images. It’s become part of the basic functionality.

I know that there are big technical challenges of storage and delivery, but until it’s solved there will be a low ceiling on the fediverse.

Israel’s far right is out of control and using the Gaza war for cover to recruit and radicalize. If Israel doesn’t figure out how to shut them down it won’t matter if they win the war. The country will be doomed.

Relative of Israeli captives confirms ‘3 hostages killed by Israeli fire,’ blasts military - The Grayzone (thegrayzone.com)

The Grayzone is an American fringe, far-left news website and blog… known for its… misleading reporting, and sympathetic coverage of authoritarian regimes.
