no one has even given you the worst stuff so far for some reason?

  • after receiving reports that Saddam Hussein was using chemical weapons against his own people, Reagan funded… Saddam Hussein
  • and then after there was another attack on the Kurds, killing 5000 with a chemical weapon, Reagan swiftly went into action and… gave them more money and advice, AND vetod a UN resolution to condemn Hussein
  • he did make a law to make it illegal to do what he did in the last two points, but then not only continued to do it to break his own law, but broke it again in also selling weapons to Hussein’s enemy in Iran. So now he’s funding both sides of the war.
  • and then he did it again in selling weapons to Nicaragua
  • and then formed the Nicaraguan contra in order to help terrorists overthrow the democratic government
  • and did it again in Iran, which is what formed Al Qaeda.

“there are two genders: political and men”

funkless_eck ,

unpopular opinion but I found ted lasso to be poorly paced, and written almost entirely without subtext or nuance. it felt like a kids cartoon, where the mustache-twirling villain is eventually won over with the power of friendship and all is forgiven. it also felt like it was willing to abandon any sense of reality and pull massive story beats out of nowhere to try and bludgeon us into feeling something.

the monologue where Ted tells his mother to fuck off repeatedly and she’s like “wow you must really love me”, the part where Nate stalks a waitress and they both look at each other with their cold dead eyes of a fish serial killer and instantly fall in love without even smiling, when Keeley fucks her boss for money but romantically… it was all harrowing but presented as fluffy.

funkless_eck ,

part of the issue is the lack of funding in earlier education so Americans finish their basic/compulsory education at university. a lot of the rest of the world does the same education but to finish by the time you’re 16.

funkless_eck ,

can you explain for a casual scroller-by with a less-than-mild interest in both?

funkless_eck ,

they actively DC’d Exact Match and pivoted to keyword match September 6 2018.

funkless_eck ,

yeah, loyalty is earned. You can’t get loyalty unless something bad happens and then the company makes a decision in favor of the employees at the expense of the company

I just never see that realistically happening

funkless_eck ,

People hate it, but as someone who leans towards fuck-cars, well sign-posted automated traffic cameras remove this problem. Stop cops from chasing people in cars like some dumb movie, and endanger both parties by parking on the freeway - just mail them a ticket.

funkless_eck ,

it is, yes. I don’t think that’s an issue because a lot of countries that use it also couple it with a system that if you continuously break the law there are further sanctions

funkless_eck ,

the residents and the police are both happy with this solution and it exactly describes my proposal, but it seems like you’re using this as proof it’s a bad idea?

the only criticism is someone saying “it’s a bit of a money grab,” which - yeah, isn’t that the point of capitalism? So is selling bread, water, electricity, internet, books…

but why I’m proposing it is because it decreases confrontation - in the context of someone being extra judiciously killed by police, so - which would you rather lose, $100? or your life?

funkless_eck ,

I don’t see why you can’t do both.

funkless_eck ,

which study are you referring to?

this one claims it increases safety www.rospa.com/…/speed-cameras-factsheet.pdf

i dont mean to be rude but are you absolutely sure you’re speaking from a place of “I want to increase road safety in general with methods that actually work” and not from a place of “I don’t want to pay a $100 fine?”

funkless_eck ,

so we agree its a good thing?

from your source:

Last year, 17,300 speeding camera tickets were issued in Linndale — 3,319 fewer than in 2021, according to reports from the Parma Municipal Court.

or are you arguing speeding in a 25mph zone is a good thing?

I see your point but also, unless you founded the city you might not have a choice if you were born there.

We have so much money in the USA, so much the human mind cannot conceive how much there is. It constantly moves, back and forth, and it constantly, constantly grows.

There is no dispassionate reason why, with so, SO much money practically lying around doing nothing — it can’t be used to make sure everyone is fed, watered, homed, clothed, and has Healthcare.

The resources to do so are just sitting there doing nothing.

The target isn’t someone who was born in a city 20 generations after it was founded, the target is someone saying that they shouldn’t have water because it would decrease their excess money they don’t need and will never touch by 0.00000001%

Ninja, literally, “invisible”, or perhaps generously, “spy” is such an insane term for a business to use anyway.

It connotates someone who is willing to break the law - kill if necessary- to bring down the opposition. Not someone connecting a new API node for Slack notifications

They probably actually mean Stakhanovite, but wouldn’t bring themselves to use a communist term (/s).

    funkless_eck ,

ticket is too exposed, what if they reverse engineer the name? just use t2387ac3 instead it saves time

    funkless_eck ,

Well you’re an odd man stranger but you yee a good haw.

Just… export the emails and most systems will have a way to import old emails.

Hell for work I’m in the middle of migrating emails sent on a platform, logged on a secondary platform but stored on a third, to a fourth platform via CSV only.

when you get good at crosswords join the dark side with the Guardian Cryptic XW

    www.theguardian.com/crosswords/series/cryptic

    funkless_eck , (edited )

They’re cryptic crosswords, so there’s more of a puzzle to the clue. e.g. with a proper noun

1D: Confused ham set London flower? (6)

Answer: Thames. (Confused Ham set = “this is an anagram of ham set, which is Thames”; London flower = a thing that flows in London = Thames)

    e.g. without a proper noun

5A) Perhaps hawk’s attempt to catch rook (4)

Answer: bird. “Perhaps hawk” is a bird; another word for attempt is “bid”, if “bid” captures the rook - for rook in chess notation you’d write “r” - so bid capturing r is bi + r + d = bird.

when they want to suggest something is hidden?

    funkless_eck ,

I mean - that’s the point though, right?

She probably knew it would be bad, it went further than she expected. It’s still art.

Like how you climb a mountain, it goes bad, you lose a hand but survive, no (sane) person is like, “good.”

    funkless_eck ,

I never saw the issue with Yoko Ono. I think she’s pretty funny.

    funkless_eck ,

probably the nostalgia talking, but it was satisfying having all your games look the same on the shelf

    funkless_eck ,

grew up with c64, spectrum+3, master system, genesis, nes, snes. So when I bought a ps1 with my paper round money and started up the intro to Soul Blade, that would become Soul Calibur, the graphics jump shook me to my core and brought tears to my eyes. I was like "THIS is the peak of graphics. Nothing can beat this.

    Here’s the video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Jscuco8zEk

Lemmy probably feels like Reddit when it first started, all warm cuddly and friendly to newcomers eager to discuss and collaborate around central topics.

I joined reddit on the tailwind, so it was all echo chamber, we hate newcomers, gatekeeping, automod frenzy, too many rulebreakers, too many rules, etc I could be wrong, but thats what I imagine it used to be like.

    funkless_eck ,

hey I’m doing my best to be rude, scabulous, irascible and misanthropic out here.

    funkless_eck ,

    ha. typo. I meant scabrous.

    funkless_eck ,

this ban is as dumb as banning heavy metal, dungeons and dragons, skateboards, backwards baseball caps, etc etc

it’s all just trying to look tough enough to court right wing racists on targets too vulnerable to fight back.

if you want to protect vulnerable young girls, you don’t start by ostracising them from the community.

    funkless_eck ,

name a video game that doesn’t have some element of religion in it. pac man? ghosts = belief in afterlife. space invaders? I’d call “belief in aliens” a religious belief of sorts. bubble bobble? maybe?

you also gotta reprint every single piece of American paper money.

what about my tarot card collection? you gonna lock me in jail because I think the art is cool?

what about how I listen to Bach or Mozart in the bath?

you gonna arrest me for saying “Jesus fucking christ” when my cat brings up a hairball?

I also enjoy “what we do in the shadows”, Yellowjackets, home alone, lord of the rings, dune… all banned by you.

Even chess has a bishop, king and queen…

There’s no need to be a redditeur about it, nearly everything is a religious experience or adjacent, and I say that as a secular person and atheist myself.

    funkless_eck ,

how is saying someone from a group of people can’t dress in attitudes that identifies them as a member of the group not ostracising? it’s the very definition.

    funkless_eck , (edited )

I grew up in the UK, learning on stick, moved to us drive an automatic.

i live in a city, I work in an office, I don’t have any hobbies that require something I can’t lift with two hands (except my piano, but I hardly take that around with me).

I can’t for the life of me think of a reason why I would need a stick. its so pleasant to be able to drink coffee or water while driving, have an arm out the window, or even just being at rest driving.

    I dont get the appeal.

    funkless_eck ,

    a) “CP” is a very online phrase that I imagine hasn’t permeated popular culture for good reason

    b) calling it “pornography” is tacitly implying it is arousing and/or serves a purpose, by calling it “abuse material” you remove any positive connotations

    funkless_eck ,

especially as it doesn’t even happen.

“oh yeah well how come I was talking about something mundane, common and extremely popular and then but 4 days later saw an ad for it?!?!?”

    big mystery indeed

    funkless_eck ,

I’m in marketing, I subscribe all all marketing new sources, I run a martech stack of a bunch of different channels: paid 3rd party syndication, search intent, ecosystem intent, technographics, firmographics, psychegraphics, funding round research, paid and organic social, paid and organic SEO, display, video, in app placements, new hiring intent… none of these platforms offer me “conversational intent”

so it’s only usage would be if

    a) you are already cooked (or server side ID’d) b) your conversation procs a buying intent signal for an affinity cluster c) they secretly inject that signal into the data and obfuscate its source

well, now you just have worse data that’s also illegal. So what’s the motivation?

    funkless_eck ,

I would eat out the most when I was pulling 14-16 hour days, and I cook at home the most when I work 8 hour days.

I dont think laziness enters into it

    funkless_eck ,

without the good, or the (hu)man(ity)

    funkless_eck ,

it was just a gag for comic effect. it wasn’t the breadth and depth of my thoughts and feelings of the digital and manufacturing epochs since the 1980s.

But also, it was kind of begging the question of “is there such thing as a good business man?”

There’s good for /their/ business. But is that- in general - good?

    funkless_eck ,

because a huge percentage of convicted are later exonerated, and a large percentage that aren’t are posthumously exonerated.

    funkless_eck ,

Every prosecution team will tell you there is zero doubt until the exoneration, at which point they’ll say “hmm.”

Also, you say “zero doubt in school shootings” but unlike folk-wisdom, the law actually does care about the minutae of culpability and is exactly the place to get into the distinctions between aforethought, meditation and whether or not they were responsible for their actions.

    funkless_eck ,

it being passé and it being tiring are both parts of what make it a meme and a shitpost.

just normally you’re on the other side of the annoyance

Trump returns to X, the site formerly known as Twitter, shortly after surrendering in Georgia (apnews.com)

Former President Donald Trump has returned to X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, firing off his first message in 2 1/2 years shortly after he surrendered at an Atlanta jail on charges he conspired to overturn his election loss....

    funkless_eck ,

truth social used to be a shitty twitter clone

until twitter became shittier than truth social

    what a fucking world.

ps don’t use either, delete your account

    funkless_eck ,

I think we’re all old here. the first game I remember playing is Chess on the C64.

    funkless_eck ,

this is why the slippery slope fallacy is a fallacy

“if we punish people for murder, what about self defense?”

    or

“if we arrest people for selling meth, it’ll end up making the state arrest people who drink coffee”

you can legislate for a specific instance and not have it spiral out of control into insanity.

Maybe some people would try to seek reparations for ridiculous stuff. It’s exactly the purview of the law, politics and diplomacy to navigate that.
