Kansas will no longer change trans people's birth certificates to reflect their gender identities (apnews.com)

Kansas will no longer change transgender people’s birth certificates to reflect their gender identities, the state health department said Friday, citing a new law that prevents the state from legally recognizing those identities....

funkless_eck ,

because someone else being non-binary doesn’t make you non-binary?

they’re not saying no one is allowed a gender, or that other people don’t have genders

they’re saying their gender is a different one beyond the usual two.

like how you don’t have to just choose between vanilla or chocolate because strawberry also exists.

funkless_eck ,

yeah you’re not also supposed to ask why someone is a certain race, religion, height, weight etc

and lol at the idea of being non binary is “less hassle”

funkless_eck ,

i don’t think it’s hard to divine the meaning of “non” - it means not

and binary means “choice between two options”

put together it means “not one of the two options.”

I believe I already covered your other points (as did the other person replying), but they did reveal their gender.

Consider this: It’s more like

“Did you watch the soccer or tennis match last nigjt?”

“I don’t really like sports, I watched a movie instead”

“why are you keeping it a secret whether you watched the soccer or tennis?”

Its not a secret, there just happens to be more than two choices.

“is your name John or Christopher?”

“neither its David”

“why are you keeping your name a secret!”

etc

families and free market capitalism are exclusive of each other.

Free market capitalism wants both parents and any children working as young as possible and as old as possible, as much as possible.

Free market capitalism does not - practically - support childcare (and childcare - bringing in someone else to care for your children - is the opposite of being a family), it does not support time off, it does not support vacations, it doesn’t support education, it doesn’t support public transportation (important when you have small kids), it doesn’t support free Healthcare for childbirth, pre- and post-natal care, it doesn’t support retirement so grandparents can help.

It also supports strict immigration and very much looks down on people immigrating with their families or brining their families over — leading to such terms as “anchor baby”

I’m a millennial immigrant to the USA. We can’t have kids because my wife’s job is location based and tied to student loan forgiveness and retirement divestment, so her family are thousands of miles in one direction, my family are thousands of miles in another direction. If we have a baby she loses her job, as theres no maternity or paternity leave, can’t get her student loans forgiven, can’t ever retire, I get 2 weeks off a year + public holidays and I often work 8am to 6 or 7pm - I would literally never see my child.

Captialism is directly responsible for the destruction of (this, but in my opinion all) families.

not only did we have the super cool Hereward the Wake, and Boudic(e)a and the Iceni tribe

but also

  • devils dyke — a seven mile ditch caused allegedly by the devil himself being turned from a wedding and stomping his tail, and you can summon him yourself by walking around the local church 7 times
  • fairy cow — a magic cow who gave milk to all in times of famine stamped her hoof in the sandstone and the.imprint is still seen today
  • devils hole - a place where such a horrific crime was committed that when it rains the ground never gets wet
  • tom hickathrift - a 1700s legend of a giant-killing giant whose catchphrase was “a turd in your teeth for your news” and whose weapon of choice was a wagon wheel

I often wonder if spam protection would be better if more clearly displayed.

I know DKIM, SPF, DMARC aren’t “friendly names” but we could call them “Sender Valid”, “Email Valid”, “Handshake Accepted” or something and then maybe a “no outside links” and “no suspicious content” — 5 pip marks or green ticks to feel better about it?

Then you could also force-display the domain and page title following links, and warn against mismatching reply-to: addresses. Maybe even show some known technographics from the headers (“Sent via Marketo?”)

All that to say, systems like that would help against spam callers and scammers.

Fairy is a homophobic term. You may think it’s acceptable, but I’ve lived through homophobic abuse, so have many others but there is a very good reason I’m offended by the term.

Homophobia has no place in modern society, and no amount of nihilistic sophistry will change my mind.

I so I will be offended by you calling me a fairy, fag/faggot, shirt lifter, battyboy, fudgepacker…

I’m two generations removed and on the wrong side of the family try to be considered jewish, but close enough that some living relatives are practicing Jews. I will also take offense at you using the word Jew and you using it in the way the post intends.

Not because I’m a sissy fairy fag cocksucker, which I am, but because I’m big enough and ugly enough to tell you to go fuck yourself with your pseduo-intellectual circumlocution.

You say yourself, “it’s not the word but how you use it” and then go on to use it as an epithet. There is nothing wrong with using the word fairy to describe Tinkerbell, or the mascot of absinthe, but when you proudly use it as an insult you’re being a hypocrite, you are using it exactly in an offensive way.

funkless_eck ,

I am one of the dozens of people in the world who wasn’t educated in America, so you know what they say about assuming.

Your first paragraph repeats my point so I’m glad we agree, and your second paragraph also mostly agrees with me. What I would say you haven’t understood is that you said you call people fairies, and indeed “r/tards”, in an offensive manner and demand we’re not offended. You can’t police other people’s reactions. What’s the difference from saying “ah yes, but when I rob a bank it shouldn’t be illegal because I’m special!”

I see your point - again - about how it’s the usage - yes, but I’ll say, also again, that my issue is with your usage.

It’s ironic you would complain about my education and accuse me of missing the point when it’s your comprehension that’s at issue here.

Finally, I’d like you to explain how “r/tard” can be used in a non-offensice context.

funkless_eck ,

and which one of these did the OP mean by “is fucking r/tarded?”

funkless_eck ,

UK ex-pat here. I was self employed. You typed in the numbers of what you earned, what you spent, hit send. That’s it. The American system is so fucked.

Nebraska governor signs executive order defining men as "bigger, stronger and faster" (boingboing.net)

Nebraska governor Jim Pillen, a Republican not noted as a women’s rights supporter, yesterday issued an executive order “defining” males and females and the attributes thereof. funkless_eck ,

IANAL but isn’t there an issue with “if any data is collected it must define someone as a man or a woman” doesn’t allow there to be an “unknown.” Therefore you could potentially skew things like crime or Healthcare statistics by counting all unknowns as one gender or the other.

Secondly, the definition “shall identify each individual… as male or female at birth” also provides a problem as one presumably can now kick back a whole bunch of stuff with the message “yes but this data doesn’t contain their sex at birth, please provide birth certificates for all 128,323 members of this list”

I actually just picked ones in America, post 1900, with more than 10 fatalities, that weren’t mining disasters. There are over 5000 workplace Fatalities a year in the US alone - a rate of 14/day.

The point has not missed me. You implied it’s unlikely that an employer would abuse their employees, I provided a host of counterexamples.

funkless_eck ,

you mis-understand. My point isn’t that people don’t die, it’s that your point was that you don’t believe employer negligence kills (or even, in your actual op, inconveniences) people.

funkless_eck ,

“no business that wants to stay in business locks it’s fire exits”

and yet…

I’m not saying every business does this, just I think it’s short-sighted off you to say that not a single one would either.

I mean we all know our candy bars, and sneakers and engagement rings are made by tiny children at gunpoint for 25 cents a week, so it boggles the mind that you think the same companies that would commit corporate genocide would think twice about preventing domestic employees from being comfortable.

Why doesn't the United Kingdom rejoin the European Union?

Admittedly, I don’t know much about Brexit, but from what I have been exposed to, it seems like a decisively economical and political impairment that made travel and business with the rest of Europe more difficult and costly. Since it is so highly criticized as a terrible move, why doesn’t the UK just rejoin the EU?

funkless_eck ,

if we held the referendum again - no new voters, everyone votes exactly the same as they did before - remain would win simply because enough elderly leave voters have died since then that now it would swing the other way, so its likely is sentiment is not trending positive

covid hoarders also worked hard to buy up all the hand sanitizer and toilet paper

also, pick a monster dictator who committed genocide, they worked hard too

working hard doesn’t mean you’re doing good things, you can work hard and be evil

landlords are creating a scarcity of places for people to home and feed their families in order to charge those families money to get rich off, and, regardless of how “nice” they pretend to be in fixing the sink if it clogs, will throw a baby into the street to be homeless if their demands for money aren’t met.

funkless_eck ,

they are a tax on speeding and that’s a good thing because speeding causes greater strain on infrastructure.

also, everyone saying “but rich people won’t be as affected” — but rich people aren’t the majority and this issue occurs with the majority.

funkless_eck ,

wouldn’t a decrease in tickets imply it is having an effect though?

and isn’t slowing down in a dangerous area to speed a provable effect of its success?

isn’t someone modifying their behavior after the fact better than not modifying it at all?

funkless_eck ,

Ive admitted it three or four times. So for clarity, again, yes it is predicated on money. Yes, it is a cash grab. Yes it is a tax. It is a tax grab, it is a cash tax. It is a cash grab. I personally feel the term “cash grab” is a little loaded emotionally and isn’t necessarily the best and most accurate way to describe it. But it seems you care a great deal about me saying the words, so I have said them. it is a cash grab.

All transactions are a cash grab. Name something that isn’t. I have said from the start that the “cash grab” “tax” etc is part of the deterrent, but, to me, at least, that is better than death.

Furthermore - cops issuing tickets is a cash grab. Cops arresting people and them going to court and getting fined is a cash grab. Forfeiting your car is a cash grab. Paying to attend remedial driving school is a cash grab. We live in a capitalist society, everything is a cash grab.

I have from the start said that prevention (the cash grab) is part of the desired outcome, it is in my original comment. It is good to fine people who do bad things because it makes them do it less- as evinced by the sources I have provided - and it helps repay the cost of their antisocial behavior back to society.

Now that we are very clear that we both agree

  1. it is a cash grab
  2. why I think that cash grab is a good thing
  3. that the good thing is the decrease in speeding

I am curious to hear why you think the cash grab - or to use my preferred nomenclature - a deterrent - is a fate worse than death?

funkless_eck ,

“it does not deterrent speeding”

according to the facts I sourced above, it does.

according to your unsourced opinion with nothing to back it up except that you “live near there” - it doesn’t. I’ll change my opinion when you can provide some facts like I did. (although I retain the right to scrutinize and offer my opinion on those facts).

it would be more effective… to enforce… on the spot

I disagree. You can enforce for every car with a camera, you can enforce 1 car with a person in another car - so by what metrics of efficacy are you holding this to? It seems like you’re saying it’s better to stop one person now than it is to stop thousands of people regularly.

If they don’t care about safety, why is the person who doesn’t care about safety better in person, with a gun, giving chase in a dangerous location?

funkless_eck ,

a) only true if not signposted, and I specifically said it should be. isn’t cops stopping you also only a deterrent if you get caught at that time? if a camera is there permanently you know not to speed after getting caught, if a cop is there on Monday they might not be on Tuesday

b) we disagree, that’s exactly what safety is to me. I don’t wear a condom if I’m not having sex, and you don’t need to slow down if you’re in an area where you can go fast — are you assuming I mean to make people slow down on the freeway? i am not, i am talking about accident prone areas where slowing down would save lives

c) so don’t make the tickets be able to be thrown in the garbage?

d) what are they, then?

funkless_eck ,

this is what’s known as a “straw man” — you used words I didn’t to make a point I hadn’t and then criticize the point you made up.

It’s considered impolite.

funkless_eck ,

I think you’re drastically blowing speeding fines out of proportion and severely underestimating the cost and impact of bad driving.
