The first lever I see in each group.

finestnothing ,

This would apply if I had to pick based on the set of levers in each group. By picking the first one I see I get out of the muck of pure math, I don’t care about the set as a whole, I pick the first lever I see, lever x. Doesn’t matter if it’s levers -10 to 10 real numbers only, my lever x could be lever -7, the set could be some crazy specific set of numbers, doesn’t matter I still pick the first one I see regardless of all the others in the set.

Pure math is super fun, but reality is a very big loophole

finestnothing ,

They get smaller to show that they’re further away in the background not that they get infinitely small. If they were actually getting smaller, then sure, I grab an electron microscope, look at a field of levers, zoom until I see one, and pick that one, then somehow throw an electron sized lever, move to the next, smaller, physics defying lever group and just wait for quantum mechanics to do it’s thing I guess

finestnothing ,

The first one that that guy sees, or the first one listed when they tell me what levers they have in the warehouse

finestnothing ,

Then I moved the microscope until it finds at least one, pick the first one from the new lever group, and my power takes care of throwing that first found/seen lever in the same instant as me throwing it in a normal set of levers

Justice Alito questions possibility of political compromise in secret recording (apnews.com)

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is heard questioning whether compromise between the left and right is possible in a conversation posted on social media Monday. The conservative justice is also heard agreeing with a woman who says the United States should return “to a place of godliness.”...

Religious extremists: everyone should follow my religion, beliefs, morals, and rules or be punished

Atheistic extremists: religion is dumb and should not have their beliefs taught as facts (creationism not evolution, etc), but people can believe what they want. Also, don’t give religious people preferential treatment (tax-free churches, absolved of crimes for being a “good Christian”, etc)

I think “you must believe only my stuff” is intolerant, but “believe what you want, just don’t push it on others” is only intolerant because religion wants to be pushed on everyone else

Even if my wife and I get our meal fully comped because the kitchen messed up or it took a long time (has happened a few times, college town. We never complain or get upset, the managers just come over and apologize then comp it), we qt least tip as if it wasn’t comped, if we liked our server and/or the food a lot (both, most of the time) then we tip the full amount of the comped meal. Without fail the servers have been surprised that we tip at all when that happens

I use chatgpt semi-often… For generating stuff in a repeating pattern. Any time I have used it to make code, I don’t save any time because I have to debug most of the generated code anyway. My main use case lately is making python dicts with empty keys (e.g. key1, key2… becomes “key1”: “”, “key2”: “”,…) or making a gold/prod level SQL view by passing in the backend names and frontend names (e.g. value_1, value_2… Value 1, Value 2,… Becomes value_1 as Value 1,…).

finestnothing ,

I use vim keybinds (via doom emacs) for this sort of stuff if I’m doing it for personal projects, my professional work is all done in an online platform (no way around it) so it’s just faster and easier to throw the pattern and columns at the integrated chatgpt terminal rather than hop to a local editor and back

It’s great - if you have a good boss.

Unlimited cons: need approval, don’t get paid for unused time when you leave
Limited cons: needs approval, some places have use it or lose it policy for each year or you need to wait for days to accrue, limited sick days

Unlimited pros: unlimited, usually comes with unlimited sick days, don’t have to worry about accruing days
Limited pros: get paid for unused days when you leave

My MIL isn’t addicted to Facebook, but fell deep into vegan/plant-based stuff lately and says the same thing about doing her own research and not blindly believing stuff. I already knew a lot of the stuff she has been pushing on us was complete BS but the kicker was when she said meat and dairy cause autism

She has currently donated over $15 billion since the divorce (started with $38 billion in amazon shares, now is worth about $40 billion despite stock price doubling in the 5 years since then), none of it with strings attached or being future promises like most billionaires. She doesn’t need tax cuts since she just gets taxed on what she actually spends from capital gains tax (or whatever, I’m not an accountant), she doesn’t stay in media spotlights except for when her donations go out, her donation org website does semi-yearly updates so its not trying to be a source of info or drama, etc.

She hasn’t lost money because she amazon stock price keeps going up, she’s just not gaining as much as she could be if she hoarded her wealth, but she knows she has more money than she could ever hope to or want to spend in her lifetime, her kids lifetimes, or however many generations $40 billion can support even assuming the amazon stock prices get tanked (very unlikely).

She just is a good human being with a good heart. It’s rare that people like that have this kind of money to give away for purely charitable reasons, but here we are

And have to be bullied out or fired to prevent that, making the police department lose their expensive investment.

There are good cops - they just end up getting bullied out or fired for trying to do the right (and legal) thing

I think Plex is better for newbies, less setup and most will want to watch outside of their network easily with little setup. That said, Plex is getting a bit enshittified so I’ve been eyeing the switch to jellyfin just in case (I’m not a newbie, k simply was when I started using Plex and don’t want to deal with the change if I don’t have to)

The religious marriage to rule them all: doom Emacs (or other packages that do similar things). All the excellent text editing of vi/vi/vi/vim, the ecosystem and all the features of emacs.

For anyone who hasn’t heard of doom Emacs, it’s emacs with a lot of customizations baked into it, one of the biggest selling points is that everything uses vim keybinds now (where it makes sense). You get the amazing ecosystem of emacs with the ease of movement and editing of vim, plus a lot of other QOL features. It’s also just vanilla emacs with pre-made (and easy to edit) config files and helper functions so you can move over existing stuff if you want, and you don’t have to worry since all the emacs packages will still work, since it’s still emacs

You should check out last.fm (or musicbrainz, which I prefer since its open source). You connect your apps to it (Plex, tidal, Spotify, etc), they send over songs as you listen to them, you can rank them as love or hate (and some other stuff) and they curate playlists and artists that they think you’ll like based on your listening habits

finestnothing ,

So far I really haven’t had musicbrainz be missing any artists or songs, idk if its different if you listen to indie or niche music though

There are some really awful captchas out there. I miss the days of just typing out some stretched and tilted numbers and letters.

I always use i because I’m too lazy to type out iterator when I’m making my garbage spaghetti code that will support infrastructure for years

They’ll just monitor everything you watch or do on it and detect anything NSFW.

I wish this was a /s but I can definitely see it happening since they’d have to ban the whole Internet to keep any sites with NSFW content from playing

Jayjo , to selfhosted

@selfhosted Have a commerical @wireguard vpn on my server. The problem i have is that if i use a docker, it does use the vpn interface with iptables, but if that goes down, the docker still goes through without the vpn interface. I have looked at iptables, but docker makes it own, and bit of a minefield. Any ideas? Thanks

finestnothing ,

Same here, idc about some of my containers going through VPN (tandoor, gitea, Plex, etc) but my whole arr suite, qbittorrent, and sabnzbd are routed through a gluetun container that uses my protonvpn credentials. Never have to worry about turning my VPN off for gaming or something since the… totally legal research papager aquirerer apps… are all routes through the VPN which changes it’s connection every 4 hours (changes my public IP but also just to make sure none of the containers run into any issues that they can’t figure out without a restart)

Doom emacs is superior

finestnothing ,

Oh I definitely agree - and highly recommend checking out doom emacs to solve that. It’s emacs configured to use vim keybinds instead (and other QOL features). It adds a bit less than 200 add-ons by default, but they’re only loaded as needed so startup time is still <1 second

FTC bans TurboTax from advertising ‘free’ services, calls it deceptive (edition.cnn.com)

FTC bans TurboTax from advertising ‘free’ services, calls it deceptive::The Federal Trade Commission ruled in a final order and opinion Monday that TurboTax, the popular tax filing software, engaged in deceptive advertising and banned the company from advertising its services for free unless it is free for all customers.

finestnothing ,

It’s not can’t, it’s won’t. Tax companies like TurboTax pay a lot of money for lobbying to keep the IRS from making it free and simple

finestnothing ,

It’s a flat $15 for the state filing regardless of state or income, it’s the main way they make money to be able to run (their optional support options are the other way they make money). I prefer the transparency of $0 federal $15 state to some ambiguous amount between $169 and $359 federal and $39-$64 state for TurboTax

Yep, their free servers are great for trying out the service and web browsing if you don’t it being slow, but none of the free servers are p2p enabled. Only paid servers have p2p

One of my favorite meals/snacks: sourdough baguette cut into small rounds with a sauce (mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, a lot of basil, garlic, red pepper flakes, onion powder, and some oregano), tomato, zucchini, mozzarella cheese baked until cheese is browned. So delicious, especially if you use fresh basil and garlic and let the sauce sit in the fridge for a few hours beforehand

finestnothing ,

Yep I put it on before baking! You don’t have to refrigerate before baking, it just helps the flavors come together in the sauce more if you give it an hour or two and you don’t want to leave mayonnaise at room temp for that long. It’s perfectly okay to mix the sauce then immediately bake them. They form little open faced sandwiches that go bread > sauce > tomato > zucchini> mozzarella so the sauce doesn’t have much exposure to the air anyway and has the tomato juices to help keep it from drying out

Same, I seed for 1 month or 4x ratio. I only have one private tracker (myanonamouse for books) that requires 1x ratio or 2 weeks seeding (maybe 2x ratio?) But I have unlimited internet. I’ve been the sole seeder for music files quite a few times, and for tv shows once or twice before they get picked up by others again. No downside to over seeding since I leave my PC on for hosting my Plex instance anyway, I just rate limit my seeding if I’m trying to watch something on Plex outside of my network and it’s buffering a lot. I get a lot of files from a usenet server anyway so I’m not bogged down by a ton of torrents (have it set to 50 active torrents, don’t think I’ve ever gotten there), just the stuff not available on my usenet server

What are you even going on about? Proprietary Nvidia graphics drivers updates are released at basically the same time as the windows version, and amd has always worked flawlessly. I have 2 2k 144hz monitors with HDR and both work and look just as good on Linux as on Windows.

The only issues with high dpi monitors is that some apps don’t both detecting the monitor dpi and need to be adjusted manually… but there are very few that that is still an issue for, and windows has the same problem because it’s an app problem not an OS problem

Biscuits and gravy is my lazy but I don’t want eggs or cereal breakfast (I make it once or twice a month). For the gravy:
Add 1 lbs breakfast sausage to pot, add salt, pepper, sage, red pepper flakes, and fennel seeds (last three are optional, but highly recommend). Break up sausage and stir while cooking over medium/medium-high heat
Once sausage is browned, try a piece and see if it needs more seasoning
Add 1/4 cup all purpose flour and stir until it’s thickened and there’s no white flour left, about 1-2 minutes (congrats, you have officially made a roux around your sausage!)
Stir in 2 1/2 cups milk (I prefer whole milk), stir often until it’s thickened. Turn off the heat before it’s the thickness you want, it will thicken as it comes out of the pot and cools on whatever you put it on. If it’s too thick (aka if the thickness looks like it would be perfect on your food while still in the pot) just add more milk and stir in. If you add too much milk, just bring it back to a simmer until it reduces to an appropriate amount.
Add salt and pepper to taste, mix in, then serve.

I added more details than needed, it’s honestly a super easy and tasty recipe, plus the most expensive part is the sausage. It makes enough gravy for 2-3 people, 3-4 if you don’t each each a lot of the gravy which is… difficult.

For biscuits, I recommend Alton Browns buttermilk biscuits: altonbrown.com/…/southern-buttermilk-biscuits/
I personally make my own buttermilk substitute (1 tbsp lemon juice per 1 cup milk) and use butter instead of lard and they still come out fluffy and excellent. Also, the tip about putting them in a bowl lined with them covered by a kitchen towel makes a world of difference. It is well worth dirtying a cloth and bowl over letting them sit on a baking or cooling tray.

I should specify that I love cooking, this is low effort in my opinion since the gravy really can’t be messed up unless you leave it and burn it, the biscuits are more effort but I bake a decent amount so I don’t mind. Store bought biscuits from a tube work fine too if you aren’t a morning person or don’t like baking.

My wife went to a chiropractor weekly for the last few months of her pregnancy (the chiro office specialized in pregnancy chiropractic). It helped with managing some of the back pain she already had plus the new ones. The best way she described it was like a massage for your bones, feels good and alleviates pain in the short term but doesn’t fix anything long term
