I have a c920 and it’s complete poop. Random hiccups and stutter and the auto focus fails.

Depends on your luck. I’ve had to repair my Samsung dishwasher 3 times in 5 years and yet my parents bought the cheapest possible model 15 years ago and it operates lawlessly and does a better job at cleaning.

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

My whole kitchen is Samsung. Stove needed a new bimetal switch because the cooling fan for the top got stuck on. The dish washer garbage disposal knife blew apart into fragments twice and the gaskets rotted and fell apart. Microwave magneto diode blew. Its all literal garbage, I’m selling my house soon and leaving that trash behind and buying high end next time to save myself money in the long term.

Can you swap the hard drive between any generation and still have it boot and work 100%? To me that was the second biggest feature after all the gpio and i2c buses I used to hack all manner of stuff together. Heck I even have a cargo trailer powered by a pi!

This post scares the hell out of me. My daughter is 5 and sheltered but I know this is coming, I see it in other friends and families. Even the parents get sucked in and tell me about these addictive and fun empty headed music videos and it becomes a family event of consuming YouTube which makes me really question our Idiocracy future…

Linux admin with 20 years experience, looking for "beginner" distro [Solved, the real beginner distro was the Debian I've used along the way]

I’m over tinkering with my OS. So I’m looking for a distro that “just works” out of the box for my laptop. Also I want to test an “easy” distro I can install for my grandpa....

I’ve gone rogue at work and formated my windows laptop with Debian which I’m also extremely comfortable in with stripped down servers. Running Wayland and using Microsoft teams and tools via the edge browser (mandated) has been absolutely pleasant. There are still initial headaches initially setting everything up and getting the drivers to work and thunderbolt docks to work but now its awsome. Best part is the 10 second shut down time when I run between meetings.

So I work for Bose. ANR ear buds are notably better than ANR headphones because they totally block your ear and adjust the ANR based on a microphone literally inside your ear. It records what is heard in your ear and cancels it, our latest buds are uncomfortably good at this. I find the absolute quiet a bit unsettling.

But to your question, you just want quiet while you sleep? What about good old foam ear plugs? They work fairly well when put in far enough.

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

The latest out in the world, the Quiet comfort ultras. Once you find the correct sized stability band and ear tip sizes you have two exceptional gaskets to block out the world. They work amazingly well.

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

Im wondering if the passive attenuation of your headphones is doing more work than the ANR system is? Regardless sound is perception and that’s all that matters. I think using any ear bud, headphone or even a speaker with Brown Noise playing loudly is likely the only sure way to completely block out your perception of all noise. Or just take some gummies and turn your brain off :)

Its not just the EV, its every layer of the supply chain. From the lithium they mine, the batteries they make out of it, the circuits and metal fabricating. Their government subsidies the electricity, tools, facilities, labor, etc. I work in the engineering field and I see bits and pieces of this everyday and have seen it for decades because I’m forced to source parts from China.

Nextcloud appreciation post

After months of waiting, I finally got myself an instance with Libre Cloud. I was expecting basic file storage with a few goodies but boy, this is soooo much more. I understand that everyone doesn’t always have a perfect experience but I’ve been using the same instance of nextcloud for over 8 years I just keep upgrading and migrating. It just works. Only issues I’ve had is when Debian withholds updating php for too long or when they finally do all the config files for php get fucked and I have to redo them all.

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

I hear ya but my instance is old (before i knew docker) and just works on the rails. I also tweak the heck out of it for performance so I deal with the annoyance once every two years. If it completely blows up I might roll it on docker.

Burning natural gas isn’t so awful but getting it out of the ground and to the place where is needs to be burned is always overlooked. It’s a gas, it wants to escape and much of the infrastructure leaks and so a great deal is lost before its used. I walk around Boston and no joke you just SMELL it all the time because the infrastructure is so old. Natural gas is also mostly methane which when leaked is 80 times more potent than CO2. Furthermore much natural gas needs to be transported on ships to be uses. To summarize there is no ‘greener’ fossil fuels it’s all to be avoided if possible.

It’s getting worst though. A lot worst. They keep adding more and more layers to make it so difficult and convoluted you give up. Last year my insurance started using an external pharmacy for my meds. Fine. But my meds to need to be administered by a nurse in a hospital. So I need to get prior authorization from my doctor to my insurance who then approves the pharmacy to do the meds. But there are 30% copays now so I use a third party company that works with the company that makes the meds to comp the 30%. Then I need to get the hospital to call the pharmacy to order meds on my behalf and send it to the hospital, not me. Then I can finally schedule my appointment to actually get the shot in the hospital. I do this circus once a year, every year because they change one layer every year and so I have to figure out the new rules. It’s pure madness.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

Every link should open a separate pop up window. Add an under construction gif of a dude digging.

How responsive is your Nextcloud?

My Nextcloud has always been sluggish — navigating and interacting isn’t snappy/responsive, changing between apps is very slow, loading tasks is horrible, etc. I’m curious what the experience is like for other people. I’d also be curious to know how you have your Nextcloud set up (install method, server hardware, any...

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

So on your Nextcloud server you use an external DNS and it greatly sped up you nextcloud? Because I noticed a few years back mine got slow and I cannot figure out why. It was about the time I enforced pihole dns with pfsense. I might need to try this.

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

I’m going to have to give this a shot tonight, need to make a pfsense rule to allow the server to get out and then change its DNS. Regarding php, my current config is the following because I have over 64gigs of ram and went through great length to get Nextcloud to cache MORE into ram:

<span style="color:#323232;">pm.max_requests = 50000 #set higher, the process is recyled after 50k calls to prevent memory leaks
</span><span style="color:#323232;">pm.max_children = 1000
</span><span style="color:#323232;">pm.start_servers = 60
</span><span style="color:#323232;">pm.min_spare_servers = 30
</span><span style="color:#323232;">pm.max_spare_servers = 120
</span>

Have you froze it recently though? They bury the fucking options and make it as painful as possible all while trying to sell you $20 a month monitoring services. Seriously equifax? Why would I PAY your backward, half assed company money to sell AND leak my data? What the christ!

You haven’t even heard them and are making grand assumptions. The bass is great at low to medium listening levels but rolls off as you increase the volume due to physical limitations.

Cursed 32 Gig NVMe drive? (lemmy.world)

Can anyone explain the purpose of a 32 gig NVMe SSD? I think it’s quite an apple thing to install such a stupidly tiny drive into a computer, but on the other hand it doesn’t seem right. This can’t be a system drive can it? But what else could it be? This is like an impractical, high-speed USB drive that requires...

Early centrino laptops had a 16-32gig solid state drive in addition to mechanical disks purely to speed boost time. It was part of the spec in order to advertise Intel Centrino. SSD was too expensive to do the whole disk so just a simple operating system essentials raid type setup made booting incredibly fast for 2010 standards.

If you can solder and heat shrink then search for “usb c trigger board” on ebay and get some for like $5. They will request either 5v, 9v, 12v, 15v or 20v. I’ve found for most older battery powered barrel jack devices a voltage that is an little under spec works just fine. Ive convertered everything in my house and now own a nice USB PD battery bank, life is good.

I don’t know why this simple fact is so often over looked. If you have to work two jobs, commute, play with your kid, do laundry, make dinner, clean up then try and relax there is NO TIME to nurture your damn kid. I’ve been running the Joplin server for over a year with clients on four laptops and three phones and share notes with my wife and its wonderful. There are certainly quirks and sometimes sync issues but by and large I’m really happy with it. There seems to be one cluster of notes I have that always irritates a fresh client sync and it shows up at 50 conflicts but I work through it. Also my notebooks are huge and the first sync can take an hour. It’s a lot slower than I’d expect.
