Ha, stupid bedbugs. A trap like that would probably never fool me!

brbposting ,

It’s easy! Just take 100% of your free time and throw it away on a far-off dream so you’re completely exhausted. Go into debt trying to get a fancy degree to maybe increase your earning potential.

More seriously, if you feel you’re in the same position:
If you’re privileged enough and have the willpower, you might be able to find a happier work environment (though it requires sacrificing your already meager free time by searching for jobs constantly for 6-12 months or more). I know folks for whom that’s paid off - very impressed with them. May also be some online courses or community colleges around that could open doors.

If your situation is impossible, I’m sorry. I feel for you.

brbposting ,

Feel what way?

I am privileged and happy. I do believe folks who are not happy should consider investing their time understanding other potential available opportunities including work, training, and higher education.

Obviously a, say, severely disabled person whose paycheck is captured by their abusive partner cannot apply my advice, so in that nearly impossible situation I sympathize.

Workers at TJ Maxx and Marshalls are wearing police-like body cameras. Here’s how it’s going (www.cnn.com)

Retail chains like TJX, the parent company of TJ Maxx and Marshalls, are equipping some store employees with body cameras to deter shoplifting and improve safety. This is part of a growing trend in the retail industry, as stores respond to an increase in organized retail theft and violence against workers. However, some...

shoplifting [is] already baked into the price of goods being sold

Tomorrow’s recipe adjusted based on yesterday’s shrink? 👨‍🍳

Question assumes a greedy entity will refuse to allow reduction of its profit margin.

brbposting ,

Them actuaries 🤓

Just called all my friends and we decided to start a TJX shoplifter training school franchise. If we’re successful this year, do we stand a chance at adding a penny to prices next year?

brbposting ,

already baked into the price of goods

I’m probably substituting the specific example here, but once somebody grabbed a huge stack of napkins they weren’t even going to be able to eventually use. When confronted about waste, they replied:

They’re already made!

It’s wild I can still remember this anecdote. I mean, after 20 years?! You can imagine how much it bothered me. No, not a few napkins. The logic, or lack thereof.

(It’s self evident the napkins were previously manufactured - they currently exist in front of our eyes!)

Taking one extra napkin means napkins will be re-ordered one napkin sooner. Much easier to defend: “sorry, it’s just one napkin.“

We need to unionize so bad, yes, but the particular argument being made re: shrink struck me as totally illogical. Surprising because it sounds like you really know your stuff! So maybe I’m missing something. Thanks for diving into the smallest thing with me here.

A social app for creatives, Cara grew from 40k to 650k users in a week because artists are fed up with Meta’s AI policies | TechCrunch (techcrunch.com)

Artists have finally had enough with Meta’s predatory AI policies, but Meta’s loss is Cara’s gain. An artist-run, anti-AI social platform, Cara has grown from 40,000 to 650,000 users within the last week, catapulting it to the top of the App Store charts....

Love your ethos.

You familiar with the Curse of Knowledge?:

Using the two words “source code” with a developer is expected.

With a random artist? Or like 20 or 40 or 75% of artists? Potential dead end.

Keep up the core mindset for sure buddy. Approaches can always be refined and I see you gave it a shot in your edit!

You may be interested in running a little experiment. The next few times you see a Lemmy post that is best understood with additional context, you can try posting a relevant Wikipedia link.

The next few times after that, you can try posting not only a link but also your own summary, a quoted paragraph, and/or a screenshot.

I would be shocked if you do not have significantly more engagement from simply taking an extra 10 to 15 seconds to screenshot, crop, and embed.

Now, remember, your point of comparison is against where you were already providing a DIRECT LINK to information. It’s a simple fact (in my eyes) that fewer people click than scroll. Translate this to IRL: you want to preach the good word, right? How high do you want the barrier to be: hope someone will DuckDuckGo (naw Google obviously) that term you didn’t understand, or know that there’s barely a barrier thanks to meeting the person where they are by pre-translating to normie?

We can always let the perfect be the enemy of the good, if we care more about minority perfection than real widespread results.

I should help work on this pitch with you later, will leave a final thought for now:

That’s really interesting. Will have to watch how this turns out, see if any 2025 image models can imitate Cara artists.

brbposting ,

There’s gotta be a buncha tools that Clippy into the terminal to say “did you mean ____?” right? Including some new ones where they trained/fine-tuned a language model on man pages?

Interesting it’s not the most popular thing to use a GUI and use shortcuts for everything you want to do while still having the option to click through a menu or wizard for whatever you haven’t memorized. I suppose the power and speed of the command line are difficult to match if you introduce anything else, and if you spend time using a user interface that’s time you can’t spend honing your command line skills.

“It tells you exactly what to do. Like, It told me to get four new bags from the rack. When I did that it told me to go to trash can #1. Once I got there it told me to open the cabinet and pull out the trash can. Once I did that it told me to check the floor for any debris. Then it told me to tie up the bag and put it to the side, on the left. Then it told me to put a new bag in the can. Then it told me to attach the bag to the rim. Then it told me to put the can back in and close the cabinet. Then it told me to wipe down the cabinet and make sure it’s spotless. Then it told me to push the help button on the can to make sure it is working. Then it told me to move to trash can #2. Like that.”

Does anybody have ideas for an anti-pick-pocketing solution they’d like to share? I might have to start a community for it. Or maybe you know some forums where designers who may be interested might be hanging out.

Requirements:

  • retrofit almost any front pants/shorts pocket
  • allow for near instant access (allowing for e.g. snapping a photo before the moment passes)
  • one-handed access
  • mechanical/passive: non-battery operated or fails in “unlocked” mode
  • if not locked to owner’s hand (or say a finger-worn key), makes removal feel obvious
  • automatically resets (resilient & inebriated person approved)
  • ideally works with any phone case
  • relatively inexpensive, and potentially even open source and/or 3D printable

Lately been imagining something like this, kinda… not really, and with only 2-3 fins:

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/8c699da9-dfaa-43d5-9980-f33a526949db.jpeg

so you gotta pull your phone out in a way that stretches the pocket to max width and one fin noticeably rubs against your leg.

Doesn’t meet all the requirements but also thought about a long and wide strip of cloth sewn at the bottom of a pocket that you could tuck into your waistband.

Edit: aware of one existing solution but not a huge fan

Probably not the case with this situation specifically

Yeah :( High-value item already in hand, never a need to guide somebody which store to buy the giftcard at or what to say to the bank teller…

brbposting ,

Not a bad strategy at all.

Still, hate to negotiate with terrorists. And bring home potato photos. Instead of $developing-nation-per-capita-GDP phone quality photos.

Which of course means the thieves will still be tempted! If anti-pickpocketing strategy becomes too successful, they’ll move to violent means, then a cheap phone will be a must.

brbposting ,

Thanks, phone theft is rampant in nightclubs as well and would be great to solve for the pocket problem.

Do like these guys (who I think spend a lot of money on marketing):

Sony BMG copy protection rootkit scandal

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/aae9efa0-10e0-4d70-8444-e77d0b2d1467.jpeg

Morons:

Sony BMG initially denied that the rootkits were harmful. It then released an uninstaller for one of the programs that merely made the program’s files invisible while also installing additional software that could not be easily removed, collected an email address from the user and introduced further security vulnerabilities.

This behavior isn’t unique to Google either; Samsung and Apple also engage in similar anti-consumer conduct. For example, in the report about Samsung mentioned earlier, it was found that Samsung requires independent repair stores to disassemble a customer’s product if it has a non-OEM part.
