Season one of StarTrek.website is in the bag! So we've added "V'ger", as a treat.

Like many other Lemmy instances, we turned one this week! If you enjoy the Voyager app experience but prefer to only login locally (not that there’s any reason whatsoever to distrust vger.app) or not log in at all, we now have an option for you!...

Very nice!!

Voyager developer @aeharding is unbelievable. What an engineer. Dat UX 🤤 (no shade but will say) srsly hard to use the default interface from web when you’ve experienced e.g. Voyager iOS.

The runes… decoded

Thanks for sending and sharing, that’s incredible to the point it’s hard to believe

brbposting ,

When this picture was making the rounds, someone complained that sharing it wouldn’t have any impact on the wealthy and powerful, but would make average people with the condition self-conscious. I’m glad that that was not an absolute truth!

@solarvector - did you happen to see a post like that?

Is everything the worst?

I’m 43, almost 44, years old and went through a bought of alcoholism during the early part of the pandemic. I went through treatment and have been fine since. However, I can’t help but feel that all the news in the last few months is just the worst. Between the AI bullshit, the wars, the effects of capitalism, and the...

TIL me & the boys should be building sky birds

brbposting ,

Ya. Everything’s expensive, so people buy the cheapest thing [with four wheels]. I don’t want folks on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum to think these are a safe option.

If(?) a ‘90s Honda sedan is safer but the Kei is new and looks cute, for the same price many will choose the less safe option.

Eight Californians die on our roads every day here and I can’t wait for some solutions. I really do empathize with everyone you readers care about (no oil companies, no just-for-funsies-truck manufacturers) - I hate the thought of crumpled and crushed human bodies.

Just added something about that - articles & crash tests over the years. Was interested in little vehicles myself. Intrigued seeing them on college campuses.

Definitely a thing. Vegan can be hidden somewhere on some products, or they might use different language.

California socialite Rebecca Grossman sentenced to 15 to life for killing 2 kids in crosswalk (www.nbcnews.com)

A wealthy California woman who co-founded a burn center foundation in the Los Angeles area was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison Monday for the hit-and-run killings of two children while they were in a crosswalk more than three years ago....

Third most popular video on the guy’s channel - a million views. A handgun that can shoot all its bullets in the blink of an eye.

30 years from now if 3D printers are unrestricted, will there be any point to gun control?

brbposting ,

That seemed random, and it kinda was: uneducated(!) guess on how long it will take the technology to both develop and popularize to the point the average kindergarten massacre* is committed with a 3D printed gun.

@Voyajer @ArcaneSlime

Is 30 years long enough for there to be a decent likelihood we’ll be able to print the switch and firearm from that video? Thanks for your responses, I can tell you know your stuff.

  • to be clear, being forever upset about Sandy Hook has no bearing on my respect for responsible gun owners, presumably the vast majority

Go ahead and educate your kids with Technology Connections or something as a supplement to school, but goodness choose your own facts?!

Amazing how you can mistreat your kids in all kinds of ways. Chain-smoke cigarettes next to their crib, homeschool them lies, inappropriate sexualization, constant screen time, physical punishment…

brbposting ,

OK thanks I take that rude comment back

Everything else stands! :)

brbposting ,

I can see a small silver lining here.

  • Queer folx (at least on the Fediverse) are too smart to fall for it.
  • Conservatives are dumb enough to get upset.

Public, profit-motivated veneers of support are at least not public displays of homophobia.

A society where 100% of its e.g. banking sector pretends to care about pride month should normalize gay lifestyles more than a society where that sector is openly hostile to them. If someone raises a kid who sees pride flags on every building, even if their parents suck those shallow displays may subconsciously still have a positive effect at the end of the day.

I’d rather have genuine support but the fake crap is at least better than hate?

The moment lab grown is one PENNY cheaper at the store will be a massive moment for animal welfare.

brbposting ,

That tells me demand is more driven by diet & environmental reasons than cost.

To make up numbers:

Price a pound of pleat, er plant meat, at $10, and 5 vegans and 5 environmentalists buy it. Drop the price to $8 and 5 vegans and 5 environmentalists and 2 price-sensitive environmentalists buy it.

Gross $100 on the former or $99 on the latter. Net more than one dollar extra profit on the former (10 pounds cheaper to produce than 12 pounds). Solution if you’re a profit-hungry corporation? Keep the price high.

Bummer but think that’s what’s going on

California law bars ex-LAPD officer Mark Fuhrman, who lied at OJ Simpson trial, from policing (apnews.com)

At least moving to a different state is a high enough barrier that some bad dudes will end up taking new jobs where there is less temptation to ruin lives.

Is there any significance to people using emojis that match their skin tone?

I’m asking because as a light-skinned male, I always use the standard Simpsons yellow. I don’t really see other light-skinned people using an emoji that matches their skin tone, but often do see people of color use them. Maybe white people don’t naturally realize a need to be explicit with emoji skin-tone or perhaps it’s...

brbposting ,

Without necessarily offering an opinion myself, there’s absolutely a chance someone views it as being in poor taste, thus at the least I would avoid doing it outside of conversations with those you know well.

brbposting ,

My immediate opinion upon skin tone emoji being introduced was the mildest frustration: we’d had unified emoji for all Homo sapiens!

Then after seeing someone use their own skin tone for an emoji, I realized… oh, dang. They can feel represented now, potentially in a way they did not before.

I use yellow 100%. But not bad folks have options.

One neat thing is on Slack you may be able to see a hint of your company’s vibrant diversity if folks are reacting with all colors of emoji. Admittedly it could also look a little cluttered though maybe they are grouping reactions by symbol now.

On a related note, I’ve seen two people with very light (though non-white) skin tones use significantly darker skin tone emoji. One of those times I brought it up with someone else and they’re like “yeah what’s with that?!” Self image or eyesight related perhaps…
