Of course, I’m in support of neutering all companion animals to ease the stray population and the strain on shelters, regardless of breed or species. Breed specific laws are only one step towards fixing the larger problem.

A lot of open source software is written by people working for corporations. Red Hat may have started out as a plucky co-op but it's now part of IBM. MySQL is written primarily by Oracle. The fact that the source is open doesn't mean it's all volunteer work.

That doesn't mean it wasn't a massive transfer of wealth, just that for a lot of it people were paid a fraction of the wealth they created rather than none at all.

Sidenote: Here's a good article about how software developers can wage class warfare. Some tips are: Don't help other people learn things, never write documentation, and make your code as opaque as possible so your boss doesn't get anything from you for free.

At best the studies show there’s not much difference between WFH and in an office. Some show an increase for one or the other but on average it’s the same.

Yours is a sane and reasonable approach. Sometimes you need to drive down to the datacenter and push a button, or there's special equipment you need that is cheaper to have in one place. These jobs should be in person when necessary.

Pushing people to commute outside of this framework puts unnecessary strain on transportation networks and useless emissions in the environment.

A long, long time ago in an internship far, far away, I encountered a user who did not need management. He remembered his passwords without writing them down, even as they changed. He could be trusted to apply software patches himself and return the media the same day. He needed nothing more from us than a friendly hello.

It has been over six hundred million seconds since then and I have yet to encounter another user such as this.

The End of Roe Is Having a Chilling Effect on Pregnancy (www.politico.com)

Polling conducted in August by All In Together, in partnership with polling firm Echelon Insights found that 34 percent of women aged 18-39 said they or someone they know personally has “decided not to get pregnant due to concerns about managing pregnancy-related medical emergencies.” Put another way, poor or unavailable...

If you’ve got an experienced doc it’s basically just wearing baggy pants and avoiding ball taps for a couple weeks. Mine did ten or fifteen a week and I barely felt a thing. If the pain is keeping anyone from doing it they should reconsider.

Am I really weird in that all this coverage of cables and wired headphones seems irrelevant? Bluetooth headphones are cheap, wireless chargers are cheap, and other than a slight change in behavior they work the same with some extra conveniences.

Is it really that weird that I never plug my phone into anything?

Lightning connectors are definitely worse than USB-C, but when they were introduced the alternative was micro USB which is objectively worse than Lightning cables.

Of course, with wireless charging I haven't used an actual cable in five years so it doesn't matter that much to me.

Hunger is the feeling of fat leaving the body.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Thanks! Simple things like this are what helped me a lot. Another was the fact that humans use most of their calories maintaining body temperature. So while you do burn more calories while exercising in warm weather, staying cold will cause higher continuous calorie burn.

So the secret to weight loss is to be cold and hungry, and to supplement this with forced labor. Using these methods I was able to get into the best shape of my life.

"Out of my league" also removes the other person's agency. Maybe they really like people who look like you, despite what popular culture implies. By approaching someone with that attitude you've already made their decision for them, which isn't fair.

I prefer Roku because it's pretty trivial to block their ads and tracking, and I can add and remove channels and features pretty easily. Now if they started forcing me to have certain channels that would change. Plus you can use it as a dumb TV without connecting it to the Internet, and even set it to use an HDMI in by default so you never see the OS.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

There's lots of places like sports bars that send TV signals from a central location and need the TVs to stay on the selected input, so I don't think we'll see it go away entirely. It may move to displays that cater specifically to that use case, however.

If I didn't have to work, I'd probably end up doing the same job I am now but for schools and local government, rather than for large companies. And I'd also be doing things like building and maintaining community gardens, or teaching anyone who wanted to learn what I know, because then there's more people to help me out and I can relax more.

What’s possible for web apps today is insane considering where it started. I remember when AJAX was a brand new technology, and now you can do videoconferences with screenshare right in a web browser.

I think the push toward apps is because of influence from mobile. Everyone wants their own app, just like everyone wanted a dot com in the 90s. Hopefully we’ll stabilize around browsers and open standards.

Touch screen computers also don’t make sense ergonomically. There’s a lot more arm and hand movement on a touchscreen compared to even a mouse, so you’ll get tired quicker.

Why are you actively trying to avoid learning how to write the loop? Are you planning to have ChatGPT fill in your loop templates for the rest of your life?

First, how is this different from having your IDE fill in your loop templates?

Second, no, of course I learn how to do it and then copy/paste from my existing code like a normal person.

Third, this is much more customizable. The example I gave is pretty simple, but you can explain algorithms to ChatGPT and have it figure it out.

Finally, I'm usually doing this for a customer in a language I'll never use again. Last week it was LabView. My role has me writing proofs-of-concept for customers frequently so I'm not going to learn something I'll never use again.

It’s going to be slower overall than just using the reference and learning how to do it.

Not when you're not familiar with the syntax and don't have an IDE set up for it.

other than people who are just impressed when you can do anything with a computer.

This happens in my job a lot more than I'm comfortable with.

Ah, yeah, that sort of thing kinda needs to be in person. I was selling software so the demo was on a screen anyway so it didn't matter if the screen was in the same room.

Too bad the metaverse sucks so much because that would be perfect for your use case.
