Road wear scales as a cube of vehicle weight, so unless the heavier trucks are only 4.6% heavier than two trucks they'll cause more damage to the roads while consuming less fuel and therefore producing less fuel tax revenue which is used to repair the roads.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Yes, and unless that road weight per axle is only 4.6% higher it's going to cause more road wear than just using two trucks.

And consuming less fuel is good, provided we find a way to pay for the increased repairs we'll need.

It's great for things like "How do I write this kind of loop in this language" but when I asked it for something more complex like a class or a big-ish function it hallucinates. But it makes for a very fast way to get up to speed in a new language

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

It's a lot less in my opinion, because you can just ask it a question rather than having to read and interpret things. Every programming tutorial in every language is going to waste my time explaining how loops and conditionals work, when all I want is how this language does them.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Right, but you can't give it the variable names you're using and have it fill them in, and if you want to do something inside that loop with

I can ask ChatGPT "Write me a loop in C# that will add the variable value_increase to the variable current_value and exit when current_value is equal to or greater than the variable limit_value, with all the variables being floats"

You won't find that answer immediately on the Internet, and you're more likely to make errors synthesizing the new syntax.

But you do you, I'll keep using ChatGPT and looking like a miracle worker.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

It's not that writing loops does it, it's that I can ask ChatGPT to hand me pre-assembled parts that I can snap together instead of typing them out with my squishy human fingers. And I can do it for pretty much any language without too many syntax errors.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I'm not saying AI will write entire applications, but it is really useful at writing small bits of code for a human being to assemble which can greatly improve productivity.

Though if we could get it to handle stakeholder meetings I'll never use it for programming again.

I started my tech career in 2003 and back then I thought I'd work for a startup, get some options, go public, and retire at 35.

That did not happen, and while I'm making more than most I don't have fancy vacations or a brand new Tesla.

WWI German grenades had sticks, which increased range a lot at the expense of accuracy.

Americans, raised on baseball, were able to get the pineapple grenades into impossible holes, which made them a lot more effective than the German-style grenade.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod , (edited )
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, grenades and baseballs are the same size for the same reason: It's about as big a shape as a person can hold and throw far with a lot of accuracy. It was just a happy coincidence that my grandfather was both on a winning Little League team and the Nazis loved pillboxes with tiny holes. He was part of the 14th Armored and could probably land a grenade in a pillbox from a hundred feet away just like throwing someone out at home from left field.

The IP cameras you can find with Google are because there's a lack of a firewall on them. It's possible to use devices on your local network without anyone knowing if you know what you're doing.

But because we consider electronics "consumer products" we don't have qualified professionals installing them, so we get doors without locks on them.

Fulton County special grand jury recommended charges against Lindsey Graham and 2 Georgia US senators | CNN Politics (www.cnn.com)

The special grand jury in Fulton County investigating the 2020 presidential election in Georgia recommended charges against Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and former GOP Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler of Georgia, according to the special counsel grand jury report released Friday.

If it had a significant advantage the expense would be worth it, but steel wheels on steel rails already have a coefficient of friction 10x lower than rubber tires on asphalt, so it's not worth it.

Remote or hybrid workers, would you rather work a 4 day week on site, or WFH completely for 5 days a week, for the same pay?

I know this will vary a lot, so hypothetically let’s say you currently WFH/work remotely at least 3 days a week. Your commute to work takes an hour max (door to door) each way. If you were given the choice of a 4 day week working onsite, or a 5 day week WFH (or as many days as you’d like) for the same pay, which would you...
