I recall learning in school that it should be left to right when in doubt. Probably a cop-out from the teacher

Rinox ,

Depends for what. Still better than random scales like 3, 12, 1760 and units that don’t mean anything like hundredweight, which isn’t even one hundred anything, unless it is because you live in another part of the world where the same word means a totally different thing.

Fancy a pint?

Rinox ,

I don’t agree. It might sometimes be cool, but with a numerical system in base 10, having a unit system in base 12 becomes really hard to manage. Let’s take meters:

1m = 10dm = 100cm = 1000mm VS 1m = 12dm = 144cm = 1728mm

How many mm is 15 dm in each system?

To make a base 12 system work, you’d need to change the numerical system also, by adding two new digits, like we do for hexadecimal numbers, so you’d have …8-9-A-B-10, where A = 10 and B = 11 (in 10 base), so that 1m = 10dm = 100cm but in base 12.

Anyway, good luck trying to pass that, I’ve seen people who can barely count on their fingers, let alone understand a new base 12 numerical system. And for what?

Rinox ,

I mean, this is the same country who walled off an entire city to stop people from leaving. This is not really surprising

Rinox ,

Well they should have 2fa, but yes, if that’s the case I agree with you.

Use Bitwarden or KeePass

Rinox ,

Why can’t we just normalize memorizing complex passwords? It isn’t that hard if you dedicate some effort to it instead of lazily making it Currentmonth123!$

This is just a stupid take. I bet you either reuse your passwords regularly or you don’t really use the internet that much. I just looked it up and I have 270 unique logins, with as many 20 characters long passwords, with letters numbers and special characters.

Now tell me with a straight face that you think everyone can memorize that.

Rinox ,

Thanks for the link, I wanted to read up on passkeys since the other day, as GitHub asked me to set one up with Bitwarden

Rinox ,

I’d wager that it will get pushed to 2026, release half broken, good to play in 2027

Rinox ,

So, this is what they meant as “kid’s menu”

Rinox ,

They have a complex system on how to channel work by prohibiting living-, healthcare- and pensions-systems to citizens based on their location and citizens need to apply for changes to these systems to be able to work in other regions.

This is called indentured servitude, it was common in feudal societies.

BTW, you should add a new line between points to have proper formatting

Rinox ,

That’s not how it works. The US spends per capita a lot more than pretty much every other country on healthcare, and yet it has huge issues with providing decent care to all its people. Why? Because it’s by design. There are enough money in the system, right now, to remove completely health insurance, put everyone under public health insurance, provide world leading care to everyone and have money left over. We are talking $6,000 per capita yearly spent by Canada vs $13,000 by the US, in 2021.

But then do you have any idea how much value would be lost for shareholders? The proposal is just insane

Rinox ,

Yeah, proper documentation is not done with comments in code, but it’s a project in and of itself. Proper documentation is also fucking hard and I have no idea how people (in open source projects) can do it. It’s so fucking boring and tedious, especially when there are a million interesting problems you could tackle instead. Mad respect for people writing documentation, seriously.

I also hate writing comments and prefer to just write out everything in code.

Rinox ,

Yeah, I wonder why they don’t demand that the GUYS WITH THE WEAPONS get the fuck out or else.

And I’m not saying whether the population agrees or not with Hamas, I’m just saying that “GTFO” is not an option.

Rinox ,

Yeah, but it’s changing. Search Engines today don’t just present you links to other websites, but have also started to take some of that information and show it to you directly. First it was by showing you little excerpts, but now with Bing Chat it’s becoming a lot more developed.

With Bing Chat, you ask your search engine a question, and it will answer you directly in a conversation-like manner. This feels a lot more like it’s not just showing you a list of sources, but it’s answering you directly, making claims, stating “facts” etc. You can easily forget it’s just a search engine, can’t fault people for this.

Rinox ,

Firefox has the same problem with V3, it has nothing to do with the browser

Didn’t they say they will implement V3, but change it slightly to allow extensions like ublock origin to block web requests? Also I’m pretty sure there’s still no timeline for any deprecation of V2 in FF, unlike for Chrome, which will disable all V2 extensions.

In a rare move, Pope Francis forcibly removed a Texas bishop who had called him too progressive (apnews.com)

Pope Francis on Saturday forcibly removed the bishop of Tyler, Texas, a firebrand conservative prelate active on social media who has been a fierce critic of the pontiff and has come to symbolize the polarization within the U.S. Catholic hierarchy....

Rinox ,

Some people are lucky that today’s popes don’t act like the popes of the olden days.

BTW, which one was the last true Pope in theory eyes? I bet it’s the fascist one

Rinox ,

Still, you can’t question the authority of the Pope and call yourself a Catholic, it’s impossible for the Catholic Church

Rinox ,

And this is why you are not an expert. Maybe you should talk to an expert and clear your doubts

Rinox ,

Yes, like Yemen or Palestine or Syria or Iraq or Afghanistan? They have interests and influence outside their own country, to varying degrees.

Rinox ,

Because I’m the last 50 years they didn’t have a military powerful enough to assure a swift and painless victory. That’s the whole point of why china keeps increasing their military and why Taiwan needs to do the same. The moment China has a critical force, they’ll attack, they have announced it loudly and repeatedly in the past decades.

Rinox ,

China could have invaded Taiwan ages ago and won very swiftly

Even if the US intervened? Because they said they would ages ago.

Also, you can have a billion people in the army, but you first need to cross the sea without getting exploded, and keep resupplying your men until Taiwan and US capitulation. This is not something china could do “ages ago”

Rinox ,

I never said they didn’t win the civil war, although they did try to take Taiwan during the civil war, when the KMT fled mainland China, and just failed. In the battle of Guningtou the PRC tried to take the small islands right on the shores of mainland China, much much closer than Formosa, and got defeated right there. For context the islands of Kinmen are just 10km away from mainland China, and 190km away from Taiwan. Amphibious attacks are fucking hard, I tell you. Way harder than you think.

Russia was thought to have the second most powerful army in the world, and to some respects they did, yet they got bogged down in Ukraine, lost organization and just got stuck in a shit position while losing hundreds of thousands of men and equipment. And Ukraine is a flat terrain with hundreds of km of frontline, it’s not a bottleneck 200km away from shore with no logistics support.

To pull off an amphibious attack of this magnitude you’d probably need 5 to 10 times the military prowess of the enemy and impeccable organization and logistics, plus complete control of the skies. Right now China cannot simply waltz in and take it, it would be a brutal war with millions of deaths, untold destruction on both sides and a possible escalation to a world war (too many countries rely on Taiwans and Chinese microchips for way too many things).

China could have invaded Taiwan ages ago and won very swiftly

I’m just refuting this claim, nothing more. I’m not saying the Chinese army isn’t powerful or doesn’t have huge numbers. Actually, I’m saying it is, which is why Taiwan, Japan and SK are rearming themselves at breakneck pace. To deter a possible act of aggression from a country that keeps building up their military and keeps talking about invading.

Rinox ,

Everything is AI generated and websites made to exploit SEO as much as possible.

At least this is what I’m thinking.

Rinox ,

Tbf the working conditions and life conditions have improved enormously since the tge early 1900s. Just remember that the early 1900s was still a Victorian era hellscape in regards to working conditions, with child labor, no rights whatsoever, no protections, 18 hours work days until you dropped dead at 40 if you were lucky.

That being said, the issue is that in many cases production has gone up by 300% since the 90s, with no meaningful change in working conditions, just a reduction in personnel. A change is needed and this 4 day work week movement is a good thing.

Rinox ,

Ublock origin has it already, it’s been a few years now. I think it just blocks the JavaScript code that checks if the ads are being played (not sure though)

Rinox ,

“I’ve made bought a machine that does the labor of 10 men!”

“You’re going to still pay the other nine, right?”

“Why? I bought it to get more of the money to myself. Why would I pay for something and get nothing in return? Why would I just lose money for no reason?”

Seriously though, the dynamics are pretty clear, there’s no investment without the expectation for extra profit (even for a state. Invest in a new railroad with the expectation of higher economic activity and therefore more taxes). Otherwise it’s just charity

Rinox ,

That’s called a cooperative, they exist. You share both the profits and the risks of the enterprise. Not all enterprises succeed. Also, some of the men need to be the managers, accountants, sales etc. It’s not just about the factory workers.

Otherwise, more indirectly, they could be the shareholders of the company. Some companies even use shares as payment for their managers and top employees in order to encourage them to improve the profits of the company.

Otherwise they could just be both the owners and the only people working at a company. If the machine ends up generating lots of profits, they could all ten decide to retire and live off those profits while hiring an eleventh person to operate the machine, or they could reinvest in the company, buy even more machines, hire more people and bring in even more profits, like a complex game of cookie clicker.

Choose the one you prefer and try making it a reality if you want that.

Rinox ,

I’m one of the ten men, I’m just a worker like anyone else here, I can just use the little grey matter I have to try and understand the world and look at it with more objective eyes, instead of killing anyone who disagrees with me.

Fucking fascist pos. If you want to kill families go to Russia or Israel and look at how fun it is.

Rinox ,

“as the store brand” meaning, if it were the same exact item with no branding, you wouldn’t give a shit

Rinox ,

Isn’t he divesting from china anyway?

Rinox ,

I don’t think he meant to the consumer. EU countries can negotiate for the price with pharmaceutical companies, so they can lower the price.

In the US insurance companies can try to negotiate, but their weight is quite low, and the federal government (medicaid, medicare) is forbidden by law to negotiate. Whichever price pharma sets, it’s that.

Rinox ,

Pfizer COVID vaccine wasn’t researched or developed by them. It was developed by the German BioNTech.

Still, bringing it to market at the required volumes requires extreme amounts of capital, there’s a reason no one can enter the club.

Netflix may hike prices after success of password-sharing crackdown (www.reuters.com)

Netflix may hike prices after success of password-sharing crackdown::Netflix’s crackdown on password-sharing likely boosted subscribers by about 6 million in the third quarter and the streaming pioneer is expected to set the stage for price increases when it reports earnings on Wednesday.

Rinox ,

Stremio with torrentio plug-in, almost as easy as Netflix, much broader catalog

Rinox ,

I can see it easily, lots of seeds too. Usually if it’s on a streaming platform, it’s also available as a torrent, especially if it’s as popular as the Simpsons.

Less popular shows, especially in languages other than English, may be harder to watch, but then again, it’s free, so it’s a price I’m willing to pay.

For instance I couldn’t find any torrents for Tattooed teenage alien fighters from Beverly hills . I can live with that. Also, I’m sure it’s not on Netflix either

Rinox ,

Yup, and, aside from the fact that humans were never made to do or be anything by anyone, but just evolved by chance, I still can’t recall a moment in our shared collective history when most people alive were bohemian artists, traveling all the time and having lots of creative hobbies and aspirations.

Afaik we went from barely surviving on what we could hunt and gather to barely surviving in the farms of the nobles, to barely surviving in the factories of the masters, to at least having some level of food security (at least in the developed world). I don’t remember a time when we were better off than now, with more free time and more security.

Not even in Stalin’s Russia or Castro’s Cuba were most people living the idyllic bohemian life everyone here seems to be clamoring for.

Rinox ,

There’s literally a law banning same sex relationships from being shown on tv and in cinemas, what the fuck are you talking about??

Also Tienanmen square wasn’t “an incident”. It was a massacre.

Rinox ,

Yes, I was worried about the square. Thank God most of the massacre happened on the streets around Tienanmen

Rinox ,

According to the Chinese Communist Party around 200-300 civilians died, and several thousands were injured. According to most other agencies, the numbers are around 10 times higher, with 1000 to 3000 dead. Either way, it’s a very high number of dead.

Or is this not a massacre? By the way, two wrongs don’t make a right

Rinox ,

I do care about wrongdoings of any country. The issues with police violence, racial discrimination and gun violence in the US are not a secret. You are not the first one talking about that. Everyone in the west talks about that, it’s now the first thing most people think of when talking about the US in the west.

That being said, I don’t understand why, when anyone even tries to say “China bad” the answer is always “but America is also bad”. Why does that make it right?

Rinox ,

Or maybe it’s the opposite and it’s Chinese propaganda and Russian propaganda depicting a caricature of the west where everyone apparently is a Nazi, while suppressing all discourse about their evil doings? Maybe they’re the ones who created this fairytale.

Have you ever considered that possibility? Or you really think Russia and China have never done any wrong and have no propaganda, they’re just squeaky clean? Because let me tell you then…

Rinox ,

Yes, then try to go to Red Square in Moscow with a pro Ukraine sign, go to Tienanmen square with a sign against the occupation of Tibet or a sign against Xi. Even if you don’t believe that, just to see what happens.

Then, do the same in any western country, with a sign against the local government or pro Russia or whatever you prefer. Just try it and report back please. Let’s see who has more freedom of speech.

Rinox ,

I’m gonna tell you a secret, no one is going to arrest you for saying what you are saying in the USA. I’m pretty sure most Americans are not even that much into Israel to begin with. It’s just a game of geopolitics.

And we are talking about the USA again. The west is not just the USA btw. Also, I’ve been to Israel, a couple times now, and that place is so fucked up, it’s not even a joke.

This being said, have you tried doing what I said? Answer me clearly. Go to Red Square, protest against the occupation of Ukraine. Go to Tienanmen square, protest against the occupation of Tibet. Just try it.

I’ll go to Rome or Paris or London to protest against Israel if you want, it’s really not a big deal. Actually, it’s more likely somebody would join me than arrest me ¯_(ツ)_/¯
