Amazon Mulls $5 to $10 monthly price tag for unprofitable Alexa service, AI revamp (www.reuters.com)

Amazon (AMZN.O) is planning a major revamp of its decade-old money-losing Alexa service to include a conversational generative AI with two tiers of service and has considered a monthly fee of around $5 to access the superior version, according to people with direct knowledge of the company’s plans.

Last time I canceled it it was very easy to do (amazon.ca)

Having to score strangers on their 'empathy' and 'courtesy' and 'knowledge' (anything less than a 5 star is a 'bad grade', I am sure) (lemmy.world)

by that i mean, those are intangible, effervescent parts of a human being that should not be quantized down to a fucking amazon star system. the ‘anything less than 5 stars is actually bad’ thing is disgusting as well - all modern companies do this.

Player2 ,

It’s easier that some think, but it is not easy. Of course it is more convenient to just keep using the thing you are already using, and no one is saying that clicking one button and getting a package the next day can’t be a time save, just that it is not impossible or extremely difficult to stop using the service.

And retail businesses with physical locations definitely don’t do the exact same thing as Amazon, given that you can go to the store to get your item as opposed to needing it delivered.

Having lived in both, Canadian healthcare >>> American healthcare. Walking out of a hospital after they saved your life with a bill of $0 is very nice in my experience.

The issue with wanting a bigger battery is that many high end laptops already have the largest capacity that you can take on an aircraft in NA/EU (100 Wh)

Player2 ,

In my personal experience it has been getting consistently worse over the last 6 or so years. It used to be nearly perfect but now it is somewhat common that the directions will be wrong or misleading

Player2 ,

I think Brave is one of the few somewhat common browser/search companies that is worse than Google

Player2 ,

It’s just one equilateral triangle and then two pairs. The specific slots the opposing pairs are in don’t matter. You can see that each sample of the triangle has a gap of 7 slots between each other.

It’s bad enough that it’s funny again for me

Textadept is also pretty cool, it’s portable and FOSS unlike Notepad++

“Atom” is one step further beyond

The OS is the worst part of the Quest line. The hardware is pretty cool but software completely removes it from consideration for me.

YouTube is finally cracking down on third-party apps that enable ad-blocking (alternativeto.net)

The company’s team clarified that their terms prohibit third-party apps from disabling ads, as it denies creators their due reward for viewership. Although the announcement did not specify any app by name, it’s plausible to presume that third-party YouTube apps such as NewPipe, YouTube ReVanced, Piped, and others might be...

It looks like NAND and therefore SSD pricing is trending up currently due to some supply limitations. If you want to get some large drives it might be best to try to do it soon, or be prepared for a wait/inflated pricing.

France votes to ban ‘forever chemicals,’ exempting frying pans (www.politico.eu)

The French National Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted a bill aimed at restricting the manufacture and sale of products containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — also known as PFAS or “forever chemicals.” The MPs, backed by the government, voted to exclude kitchen utensils from the scope of the text....

Nonstick pans, though most of the harm is from manufacture, not end-use

Player2 ,

Both of these do require more maintenance and patience than nonstick, which will inevitably make some people upset

Player2 ,

Cast iron and to a lesser extent carbon steel require special considerations for seasoning, none of them are dishwasher safe. Stainless steel doesn’t really need seasoning but is significantly easier to get high protein food stuck on than PTFE

Player2 ,

For meats yes, for everything else no.

Player2 ,

100% but many people don’t care about this stuff at all. They will happily toss their nonstick pan in the dishwasher, ruining it, and then buy a new one a year or two later when it doesn’t work properly anymore, or just suffer with it and conclude that they are bad at cooking. When you try to discuss seasoning, hand washing, and the intricacies of frying pan materials, their eyes immediately glaze over. Nonstick pans have the advantage of just working when you get a new one, and that is really appealing to someone with low cooking knowledge or interest.

This seems significantly more impactful than pets

I had exactly the same thing, and would come to my senses (for lack of a better term) every so often and be genuinely confused where days or even weeks had gone. One thing that has been really helping me is writing all the little things down such as what I ate or learned in classes as you mentioned.

I personally started using Logseq for this but basically any note taking application will do. The most important feature that I use is linking topics, for example I would mark a bullet point with and so on, which eventually organizes the thoughts automatically. It’s really nice to be able to just write and not even think about organizing it as that’s the computer’s job.

Using the F40 preview with KDE and a regular update from Discover rolled xz back to the known good version 5.4.6

I've Installed multiple Linux Distros on my Editing Rig to see how well Davinci Resolve Studio works. Here are the results.

So a couple of weeks ago, I made this post asking for help from those who used Linux and Davinci Resolve, and their experience. To those who’s response was effectively “I use arch btw”, I hear you, but that wasn’t the question I wanted to ask....

Interesting, I had zero problems with the RPMFusion Nvidia driver on Fedora on two machines that did have TPM and secure boot. In fact, it was surprisingly easy.

Linux Note-taking app that supports CalDAV

Hi, does anybody know any notetaking app which supports sync with caldav server ? I am self-hosting a Radicale server which on android with DAVx5 client and jtx Board app works pretty well! I have searched on web but haven’t found any desktop alternative to jtxBoard yet which supports this protocol. Anybody using this setup ?

Player2 ,

Syncthing works very well for Logseq, I use it on 4 different devices and changes only take a couple seconds to be synchronized. The app even automatically refreshes the data when a change is made so you don’t have to worry about only having one instance open at a time.

Enjoy spreading misinformation online? There are valid criticisms against LEO constellations but Kessler syndrome is not one of them

Player2 ,

Still shocking to me that these people try to get ‘off the grid’ without even considering literally disconnecting from the grid as an option

Player2 ,

Definitely a clever way to get a lot of publicity for a seemingly fairly major anticheat oversight. I believe that the intent wasn’t malicious, they could have done a lot more harm if they wanted to.

If this fashion is at my fingertips then I better wash my hands

Doesn’t like a Spider-Man comic at all actually, it’s a Spider Man comic. Hyphenation matters!

Player2 ,

I’m talking about the cover of the original comic. I know it’s actually hyphenated now but it is clearly not in OP’s picture

Player2 ,

The question was “why,” you may as well be protesting the addition of a new codec

They haven’t banned it yet, they’re just looking to do so at some point

Try tablets, less waste and less messy

Player2 ,

No actually, sorry for being unclear

Player2 ,

Toothpaste tablets. Pop one in mouth, chew, instant toothpaste. So nice to travel with too since they’re dry

Player2 ,

Interesting report, though for me they have been just as if not more reliable than paste. Been using them for a few years exclusively and my oral health has actually improved, though that might be coincidence.

Either way, the most important benefit for me is the lack of a plastic package. I just put the tablets in my old metal tin, very efficient!

Player2 ,

I have not seen a consensus that they are not as effective, and they have definitely been great for me personally. Once you dissolve it in your mouth, it’s literally the same thing as traditional paste: same active ingredients, foaming, the lot.

Player2 ,

Whenever I break something and can’t figure it out, I just make sure anything important is backed up and do a clean reinstall. Someone else might have a better answer though

That’s what I do, everything local only and then remote access through Tailscale

I just enjoy putting on a hoodie, turning down the lights, and running updates manually every couple days. Makes me feel like hackerman
