You need a break from the internet.

Compared to PhotoPrism for example Immich supports multiple users.

Lynn Conway, leading computer scientist and transgender pioneer, dies at 85 (www.latimes.com)

I have mixed feelings on the pronoun use, but having read some of her autobiographical writing I don’t think she would have taken much issue with it. This piece is more focused on her work in computer engineering, so I felt it was appropriate to post here.

Tywele ,

Transition can refer to different aspects like your appearance or how you present socially. So transition is still the right term.

Tywele ,

How about letting transgender people decide that?

I for one want to be referred to by my chosen pronouns even in the past pre-transition.

Tywele ,

Also in the case you described when she talks to someone who didn’t know her pre-transition it would be a forced outing using the old pronouns and deadname.

Tywele ,

There can still be another side, like I said, just in another aspect. Their gender identity might have been the same througout but their presentation would’ve probably changed with time. Thus a transition.

Tywele ,

I will miss the iconic witch voice from PoE1 😕

Tywele ,

It looks very interesting and with a few of the original creators on board also promising. But does anyone else think that the FOV in the trailer during the first person sections looks weirdly small?

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It’s a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

Is there any significance to people using emojis that match their skin tone?

I’m asking because as a light-skinned male, I always use the standard Simpsons yellow. I don’t really see other light-skinned people using an emoji that matches their skin tone, but often do see people of color use them. Maybe white people don’t naturally realize a need to be explicit with emoji skin-tone or perhaps it’s...

Tywele ,

…since they already represented everyone.

Did they really? Because if that were the case we wouldn’t have different skin tones for emojis with people claiming they feel more represented by them or happy to use them because they have the same skin tone.

Tywele ,

That’s a refreshing take to have on things.

Any advice for a long-time Linux user, first-time Linux *desktop* user?

I’m a regular user of Linux systems but apart from a couple of test Ubuntu installs many years ago they’ve always been containers or VMs with no DE which I can throw away when I break them. The Steam Deck showcasing how far Wine/Proton has come combined with Windows being Windows has given me the push; I’ve made a Mint...

Tywele ,

What’s wrong with nano?

Tywele ,

I know but I just wanted to know what their take on it is.

Tywele ,

Immich is by far the best and most convenient.

Tywele ,

They’ve been doing that for a long time. And yes raytracing works.

Tywele OP ,

I am very particular about my home screen and prefer to have Material You icons everywhere but unfortunately Firefox shortcuts don’t have that.

Tywele OP ,

If you look inside the file you will see that it’s an encrypted file created via ansible-vault

Tywele OP ,

It should be pretty easy to adapt it for Debian. The only thing you need to change as far as I can see is the usage of the dnf module to the apt module.

Tywele OP ,

Thank you! 🙂

Tywele OP ,

The apps service just borked itself and I couldn’t get it to properly start anymore. Also deploying apps always took a ridiculously and annoyingly long time (like about 15 minutes to deploy NPM).

Tywele OP ,

I know but I also learned that it’s generally better to use the specific module for the package manager (just can’t remember why from the top of my head) and I never intended this playbook to be generally usable.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

Tywele ,

Veganism is not a dietary choice it’s a lifestyle choice. Diet is just a big part of it but not the whole thing.

Tywele ,

Veganism is not about completely eliminating every use of animal products no matter what. It’s about reducing animal suffering and their exploitation as long as it’s possible and practicable.

“Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.”

From www.vegansociety.com/…/definition-veganism

Tywele ,

The answer is “plant-based diet”

Tywele OP ,

This confuses me because the default docker-compose.yml from Immich doesn’t set these environment variables.

Tywele OP , (edited )

I added the REDIS_HOSTNAME and DB_DATA_LOCATION environment variables. Not sure if I understood it right, but I guess not since it still doesn’t work:

Tywele ,

I recently began learning Ansible and this playlist was very helpful with learning.

Tywele ,

Does it not have a Fedora package or is it just not listed on the GitHub page?

Tywele ,

I just found it weird that one of the most popular distros doesn’t have a package for it.

Weird KDE Panel resizing bug. Thinking of a complete reinstall (sh.itjust.works)

Whenever I resize the panel or the any other widget on the panel (e.g calendar widget) it doesn’t remember its size. It’s really annoying me. I am on Fedora 40, KDE 6.0.4. Nothing seems to fix it, thinking of a complete reinstall. Is anyone of you getting this bug?

Tywele ,

That was about remembering the window position not the size but maybe it can be adapted.

Tywele ,

I wish they would let us disable app labels on the home screen.

Tywele ,

It’s the Augmented Steam extension for your browser of choice.

Tywele ,

If that would be case I doubt he would push patches to Nouveau under his Nvidia work email address.

I love open mod logs.

Most of the time transphobic comments are pretty clear cut including yours.

Is rsync.net a good service for backups?

I’ve been playing around with the self hosted apps for quite a while and I got to the point where I’m happy about my local setup. Next step is to setup reliable offsite backup. I’m using borgbackup as a tool to manage my backups (so far only local backups). I’ve been looking for an affordable yet reliable service to...

Tywele ,

Hetzner also supports snapshots and you can upload files uncompressed.

Tywele ,

I don’t know from the top of my head and I can’t check right now.

Tywele , (edited )

Since you want Docker, it works better on btrfs.

Can you elaborate?

Tywele , (edited )

The more LGBT people are accepted in society the more likely it is for people to come out of the closet. Simple as that.

Most likely there were always as many LGBT people as there are now you just see them more now because we feel more comfortable coming out and awareness helps people realize what their feelings and thoughts mean.

Edit: oh and nobody is “going” trans they always were if they are, they just might not have realised it yet.

The most common reason for trans folk to detransition is that they encounter to much bigotry, hate and generally receive no support from their family/friends and/or the people they love.
