Hey.

I’m Dan. A 35 year old father of two who doesn’t have nearly as much time as he needs to do half the things he wishes he had the time to do.

How are you finding it?

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve been using a service called Hardcover after switching over from StoryGraph last year. I’ve been searching for a ‘letterboxd for books’ for years and I think this is the closest I’ve found so far.

I’m laaaaazy as sin when I’ve finally got the kids to bed so I usually hold it in my right hand and then operate the thing by pressing the buttons with the same hand. If I have to move my left for anything other than moving my drink to my mouth I consider this a loss.

I’ll be honest with you, up until this comment I thought it was fictional.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Are you wanting fiction or nonfiction??

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Not entirely related but I’ve read some books on the Franklin expedition and found them fascinating so I’ll definitely take a look.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Sorry, but what’s a beta-read?

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Yup Libra2. Just about does the job. Kinda tempted to go for a larger screen next time.

Oneeightnine OP ,

Animal Farm is one of my favourites. I’m really into Politics, and AF presents it in a fairly straightforward, yet utterly captivating way. It’s also pretty short so I can get through it in like two or three sessions.

I read 1984 like 15 years ago, during a time when…well frankly I was an idiot teenager who knew nothing of the world. I should go back to that at some point.

Oneeightnine OP ,

Credit where it’s due, I can’t handle more than one book at a time.

Very northern.

I’ve been opening the cupboard doors for an hour now and nothing has yet popped into existence.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Now that doesn’t sound too bad at all. Enjoy.

I’ve got a Kobo Libra2.

Pretty happy with the build quality and screen. Less happy with the walled garden approach that Kobo seem to be operating.

That’ll probably be something I take into account when I come to get my next model.

A fellow More or Less listener I see. Good taste.

I have just finished reading this.

As an aside, how do you manage to maintain focus when reading so many books at the same time? I genuinely don’t think I could manage more than maybe two at a push.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Yes I’d prefer to stay away from the news side of the industry because I can find that stuff to be exhausting at times.

Ideally LTAG will flourish into a place to talk about what you’re playing, dissect the latest video from your favourite content creator or post some really cool art from an old magazine you’ve just found in the loft.

I watched my favourite sports team score two goals in the final 90 seconds to force overtime…and then promptly lose in overtime. It is the way.

Jazz Hands

I’ve got two for you. Both by the same author but they’re both real page turners.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Harcastle and The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton.

So far we’ve had a few gusts but nothing approaching what we had on Sunday evening.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Yes and no.

Yes, in that I’ve been beaten by life and wanted to stop and just sort of…not exist anymore. No in that I can’t, cause the kids. It’s a vicious cycle. There’s been moments where I legitimately just want to cease, but then I feel bad about the effect that’d have on the kids…which in turn makes me feel significantly worse.

You heathen!

Before the diabetes diagnosis I used to take three sugars in my tea.

Two years later and I’m not sure I could stomach tea with sugar in it.

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I accidentally tried a milkless, sugarless tea from the work vending machine the other day and, you know what? It wasn’t half bad.

The brolly thing has caught me out more than a few times on the school run. I should definitely be carrying them with me going forward.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’d argue the need to have a cuppa immediately after finishing anything remotely tiring (shopping, driving more than 45 minutes, building a thing).

Extra points if you go ‘ahhhh, right I need a cuppa’ before actually making one.

Tried to explain why ‘Bob’ was funny to them last week and they weren’t having any of it.

Can’t speak to the hardware question but the game itself is definitely worth playing, especially with headphones.

It’s one of the few games that I think everyone should experience at least a little of. The puzzles can be a little meh, and the combat is fiiiiiiine, but where the game really shines is in its atmosphere, world design and use of FMV and audio to really sell it’s story and put you inside the protagonist head.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Fear of social rejection mainly.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I agree with you. I think we should be actively encouraging more posting.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’m on my second re-read and whilst I agree it’s a bit frustrating, there’s still so much good stuff to enjoy along the way that I’d recommend sticking with it if you’re enjoying it. You got this!

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

No one has any idea what they’re doing.

I’m 35. I’ve got two kids. I make it up as I go along. There’s no plan, no blueprint. There’s just the day to day crap that life has for us all. I wake up, I go to work and my only real aim is to get home to my kids and partner.

how do you even use twitter?

I’m not actually using twitter, just never got into it, but now that I’m trying out mastodon, idk if I’m just too old now but I don’t… get it. I just can’t seem to engage with anyone, the UI seems confusing and counterintuitive, I don’t seem to have the context to get into this type of website, can someone tell me...

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

With regards to Mastodon, there’s no algorithm. So you’ll need to be using the hashtag search function to really find the sort of people you’re interested in communicating with.
