Hey.

I’m Dan. A 36 year old father of two who doesn’t have nearly as much time as he needs to do half the things he wishes he had the time to do.

Agreed it’s deeply cynical on their part…but the sad thing is that people will happily hand over their money for it.

I think the English language versions of 3/5 ASoIaF books are already split into two anyway. Can’t remember if aGoT or CoK are however.

Missus took the kids away for the weekend; first time I’d have a night to myself in well over 5 years. It was amazing. Until they came back…

Anyway Monday is going to be an easy day. Partner is working, the kids are tired from the holiday and I think we’re just going to mong out at home. And when I say ‘mong’, i mean that my daughter is going to make me watch The Descendants over and over again on D+.

Weekend without the family - Day 2.

Have spent the day in bed. Read for a few hours. Ate last night’s takeaway pizza. Had a nap. Looking forward to more reading before 7 when me and my brothers are jumping on for some late night Videogame action.

For the first time since I became a parent, I’m looking forward to a night without children (my eldest is 5). My partner is taking them away with her parents. Friday through Sunday.

I love them all to pieces…but I can’t wait.

@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’ll always take the terrible cold if it means they no longer have that same cold. Give me a few rough days over them waking up every 4 hours.

But no…all appears well.

Most emotional moments in games? (SPOILERS)

Just for the heads up, this thread will probably have a lot of spoilers. I’m gonna try to go vague on spoilers for anybody that hasn’t played Hotline Miami 2. If you’ve played the game, you’ll probably know what I mean, but I’m going to say some purposefully esoteric shit to keep it out of full spoiler territory....

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’ll throw out the final twenty minutes of Abzu. It’s not one specific moment, more a combination of things that come together to make a truly incredible sequence that sees you doing things inside the game that you hadn’t previously done, alongside some truly incredible visuals and music, it’s really incredibly moving.

Looks like the Dev is looking to add a lifetime option and an option to remove ads in the future.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Where? I can’t see it in the Ultra section??

Update

Found it.

£12.99

The option is available by clicking your profile icon and selecting ‘remove ads’.

How does Elden Ring run on it? I’ve already played it on Xbox but I’m thinking a second play through might be in order on the Steamdeck.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve just this evening started playing Hogwarts Legacy. Spent most of my time tweaking it to get it to run as well as I think it can do.

No joke, Steamworld Heist got me through the first two weeks of being a parent.

Right now?

Yeah. It’s going good.

I use GGapp.io to track my video game stuff. They have a wishlist feature and iirc you can add notes to the page. Doesn’t track prices though.

I’m probably not the target demo for Nintendo, but I won’t lie…the Switch feels very long in the tooth at this point.

Great concept, great delivery, but it’s showing its age and it’s time for an upgrade at the very least.

I’ve got a Kobo Sage and I love it. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have the depth of accessories that you can get with the Kindle Paperwhite.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Toddler had a rough night last night, and now the eldest has walked downstairs sneezing and coughing. Guess we’re about to have our third family cold in the last 6 weeks.

Urgh.

The Forgotten City definitely got it’s due last year. It was on an awful lot of people’s GOTY lists. Which was warranted, because it’s really really solid.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve got a few recommendations regarding presidents.

Gimsons Presidents: Brief Lives from Washington to Trump - Each President get a few pages, and whilst it’s not as 'hard hitting as some of this list, it does have some very fun writing, and really nice art as well.

The Presidents by C-SPAN - They take the most recent C-SPAN Presidential poll and dedicate time to each president based on their ranking. A lot of it is transcribed from audio interviews, but it’s still a solid read if you’re looking to get a grip on these guys.

The Presidents: 250 Years of American Leadership (By Ian Dale) Another round up, but this is perhaps more… current than the C-SPAN book as it takes newly created essays written exclusively for this book.

The Complete Book of US Presidents - More of an encyclopaedia than anything. It’s massive, but it covers everything from First Lady’s to Inaugural speaches.

Could probably find a few more if you’re interested?

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Impeachment by Jon Meacham - Read this one last year and it was likely my favourite read of the year. It lays out the case against each of the three (at the time) Presidents to have been impeached (or in Nixon’s case, soon to be Impeached). Absolutely fascinating.

Leadership in Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin - This one is more personal. It focuses on three Presidents, their careers, how they came to be where they were and how their ‘biggest’ moments came to define them.

That’s all I’ve read so far, although I’ve only been ‘interested’ in this as a subject for about three years. Hope it helps.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Agreed. It gets to the point where if anything, it’s inhibitive to growth because people just zip right on past it before ultimately unsubscribing.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Finished Viewpoint the other day. I’d say 3-4 hours total, which is perfect for where I am right now.

And last night I made some headway with Bloodborne, a game that genuinely makes me anxious like no other media property ever has.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I think one of their biggest concerns is that the majority of the work will be done by the AI and then a significantly smaller team of random writers will be hired on a very short term contract to merely check the work over and dot the t’s and cross the I’s.

Birthday party. Another. That’s the tenth since March. Nine of them on a Sunday. Which happens to be the one day of the weekend that my partner works. She doesn’t seem to mind parties. Funny that.

Also started and finished a little puzzle game called Viewfinder.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Started and completed ‘Viewfinder’ over the last few days. It’s a little puzzle game where you have to play around with a camera and toy with angles to solve puzzles. Little Portal, little Witness, and a lot of fun.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I was reading The Lord Of The Rings as an awkward 17 year old whilst on holiday with the family. We went for a walk together and I found a big stick and took it back to the lodge. I claimed it was…my staff.

So now whenever anyone in the family finds a (even remotely) large stick, I get a family group chat full of nothing but abuse and Micky taking.

Yay.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve got two small children. I haven’t slept for more than four hours in a row in about five years.

Help.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I play an awful lot of games on easy mode now anyway, unless I’m going in specifically to learn the game (Fromsoft games for example). If I’m playing a random open world game or a FPS I’m gonna knock that difficulty down to make life a little easier.

Time. I’d rather not do this, but I get like maybe five hours a week to play. The days where I can sit down on weekends and just…game are long gone, and likely won’t return until the kids are much older.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Iirc I had a similar issue with base game Control. I wanted to experience the story but the combat really rubbed me the wrong way at first and I ended up knocking it down pretty early.

@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

My favourite Reddit client coming to Lemmy. Where do I give you my money?

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Giantbomb did a frankly incredible series around Kerbal Space Program a few years ago. It starts off incredibly goofy and by the end it’s still incredibly goofy, but also deadly serious.

Worst Holiday Experiences

Both my kids are sick. Both have colds. My eldest has a recurrence of pinworm that didn’t show it’s head until 11pm last night and ultimately resulted in me sleeping (badly) on her floor. Then, as we finally pull away from the hovel of disease that is our house, my drivers side front coil spring snaps and hey presto, we no...

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I made the mistake of showing my eldest the Welsh flag. Now she thinks it’s Westeros before the reign of the Old King. Dragons everywhere.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

We’re going on our first holiday as a family of four today. Both my kids have come down with colds in the last few days and then last night, at the worst possible moment it was revealed that our daughter has a recurrence of the Pinworm she had a few weeks ago. I spent my night on her floor, she spent the night itching and crying.

So yeah. We’re all going on a summer holiday…

Oneeightnine OP ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Theoretically, is there any reason to set a game to lock at 30fps but then run the display at say 60hz?

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

My favourite bit of music from that is (iirc) titled '14.3 Billion Years. I’ve listened to it hundreds of times and it still gets me every single time.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

To be fair last summer was down right horrific and as much as I don’t enjoy the rain at all, I’d rather not have to deal with 45° heat again any time soon.

Could we maybe get a solid 26/27° instead?

Working parents, how do you find time to game?

I grew up an avid gamer. But now, among my 50-hour work week, helping my kids with their math homework, grocery shopping, and house chores, I’m no longer able to find enough free time to really dive into a game. I mostly play casual games that I can drop in and out of but forget about the 40hr+ games requiring commitment....

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

5 year old and an 18 month old. I used to work nights so I’d basically have three hours a night from when they went down, to when I had to leave for work. Unfortunately working nights wasn’t tenable anymore, and as such I now work days…and get significantly less time to game.

If I’m lucky, both kids are in bed at 7:15. And if there’s no bedtime theatrics…I can usually carve out 2 hours to play, three if I’m feeling risky (have to be awake at 4:30).

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’ll throw out Bad North. It’s a little strategy game that features scenarios that last 4-5 minutes at most.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Been eyeing this up after my favourite podcast recommended it. Any idea how it runs on Steamdeck?

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I’m going to get ruined regardless, at least I’ll be able to do it whilst I’m on the toilet now.

How often have games made you do a double take in real life? (i.imgur.com)

Maybe you see a plant you have to collect in game or a rock wall that looks different. What items have you caught out of the corner of your eye that you realized was just your brain so focused on looking for things in a game that you saw it IRL and made you double take?

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I fell into PUBG pretty hard when it hit early access a few years ago. To the point that one day, whilst at work I saw something on the floor and off in the distance. For a breif second I mistook it for a Vector submachine gun.

Oneeightnine ,
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I own everything, but I’ll be honest my preferred way to play right now is on my Steamdeck. Being able to play PS4 quality games on the sofa whilst the kids/partner has the TV is a game changer for me.
