It’s also worth pointing out that OLED’s solve many of the drawbacks of LCD’s, particularly around latency and response times.

We just don’t talk about burn in.

I used OSMC for years going back to when it was still raspbmc, got the first Vero and then the 4k model.

They were never perfect and hassle free, a lot of which I put down to Kodi itself. I love the idea of Kodi, but the base interface is lacking (especially when you have a big collection) and most of the fancy front-ends / skins I tried would run too slow and once again bring back the shoddy TV experience I was trying to avoid. It also does not support streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ in any usable capacity. Kodi has a rich add-on ecosystem, which usually means you can plug some gaps but the add-ons have a habit of just breaking out of the blue or during major upgrades. I’ve had to have Kodi index my library so many times that I got sick of it ruining film night.

Eventually I bought an Nvidia shield, still using Kodi at first but switching between Plex, jellyfin and emby until I settled on emby for my local content. Being able to use other streaming services was a bonus and the hardware was good enough that it doesn’t feel sluggish.

You can also install 3rd party apps like smart tube for an excellent YouTube experience (and now my preferred way to watch YouTube).

The shield is starting to show it’s age big time (it doesn’t support HDR on YouTube, for example) but sadly outside of the USA there isn’t really any devices that match or beat it - you keep hearing about that Wal-Mart device being brilliant but that’s US only.

So in short, get a good android TV box for the best experience and the most options.

In the UK we’re mostly using metric with the odd exception (we still love a pint of beer), one of which is that speeds are measured in MPH. It’s not really a big deal, there aren’t many customers between miles and kilometres and anything less than a km is still usually measured in metres.

There’s weirdly a lot of fractures within the LGBTQ+ community, there’s a joke that the letters are “in order of preference” and quite a lot of the gay community doesn’t recognise trans people, or thinks Bi folks are just gay but won’t admit it and things like that.

An ex of mine was bi and I got exposed to a lot of this shit because of the amount of shit she got from some of her lesbian friends over dating a man. It really shocked me because it’s completely against your own interests to become the very thing that’s opressed you and your kin, yet here we are - gay republicans.

I don’t think any of the UX problems you’re describing have been solved on any platform. If anything Windows is one of the better examples here, because I’ll be fucked if I can ever find a file on Android and don’t get me started with Linux.

Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

No, neither is easy to use. The second you have to use a terminal or command line you have completely lost the vast majority of people.

Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t say it was good, but it is easy to use compared to a terminal. It won’t help you find your file, but it’s somewhat intuitive to a novice user - you click around and open folders until you find something that looks like what you’re after. It’s not efficient, it’s downright tedious, but it’s at least easy to do.

It’s all about the barrier to entry to novice users. Most users are novices, they’re the majority of the market so they’ll decide what the market leader is.

I’d like to know more about the grill cooking process. I have recently got into outdoor cooking and love my gas grill (I know, sacrilege but I like the convenience over charcoal). I got a pellet grill smoker a while back and that’s been a game changer too but I’ve been debating getting a pizza oven as well but now room is becoming a problem 😅

How do do pizza on your grill? Do you have a pizza stone or something?

The problem that I see is that all of these alternatives still rely on YouTube at the end of the day.

And the cost of setting up a new video hosting site that’s free to consume content from is ridiculous.

Kushan ,

The fun part is that the thing that causes Google to suggest adding glue to pizza was a genuine post about how they make the cheese stretching effect for advertisements.

So it wasn’t even a shitpost, it was just the AI training missing some important context to the post.

Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

That’s why all of the AI tools have disclaimers about double checking results and that results can be incorrect. That’s the liability waiver.

Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

There’s definitely still plenty of utility here. Most technical people agree that they’re generally just very good at googling things but what if you don’t know what to search for? An AI can take your poorly worded question, make some kind of sense of it and spit something out.

Whereas anyone who knows how and what to Google will probably find the right answer faster. So it at least levels the playing field a bit.

Maybe.

Sure, but Microsoft has since contributed a lot to Linux and other open source projects. That’s not me saying “oh they’ve changed!”, that’s me saying they’ve made it significantly harder on themselves to bring legal action against because they’ve publicly endorsed and supported the project for so long.

Whatever legal arguments they tried in the past that failed are even weaker now.

I’m old enough to remember the SVN days (he’ll, even the CVS and…dare I say it… source safe days).

Git is fantastic. It’s pretty universally uses because it’s the best dvcs out there and it’s free. It wipes the pants with the likes of mercurial.

In certain industries (such as gaming) there’s still a strong hold by perforce but we can ignore that as it’s proprietary and a bit specialised.

Anyway, as great as git is for making things easier and cleaner when dealing with distributed development, it by no means makes something impossible “possible” - it just makes it a hell of a lot easier.

The Linux kernel on the other hand enabled a lot of impossible things. Remember back in the day there wasn’t anything free and open source in the operating system world, it was all proprietary and licensed. If you wanted to create your own operating system, you basically had no option but to spend a fortune either writing your own kernel or licensing someone else’s (and the licensing part means you cannot distribute it for free).

The fact that the FSF has always wanted to write their own OS and never been able to achieve it without the Linux Kernel, in spite of them essentially writing “everything else” that makes up an operating system, shows just how nontrivial this is.

Statistically, the best properties to have are the ones just after jail. Everyone who passes go still has to pass them, while those who get sent to jail also have I pass them. The organge properties are the best, because the average dice roll is 7 and from jail that lands you right on them.

It didn’t require using arcane commands just to sign up and log in. I love IRC and will always remember it fondly, but it wasn’t easy for a novice to use and that’s why things like slack and discord took off.

If the game is good I’ll buy it, if it’s shit I won’t. I don’t see how these NPC’s will make the game good and I haven’t personally bought an Ubisoft game in several years.

What file format do you store your media in?

Hello! I recently listened to a podcast that talked about how storing media files in .av1 format is very efficient and storage-friendly. I’ve been storing my files in .mkv format, but now I’m considering using Handbrake or a similar service to convert all my video files to .av1 if it’s more compressed than .mkv. So;...

Another recommendation for tdarr, set it up in January and let it transcode away, going to h265 for all my media - saved me over 40TB of space so far and I haven’t noticed a massive drop In quality or had any playback issues.

Yeah I love nano. I can use vim a little, enough to make a change and save the output. I can even exit vim!

But 9 times out of 10 if I need to edit a text file in a terminal window, I’m just making a quick config change - I need the terminal equivalent to notepad, not the terminal equivalent to an IDE.

Nano is exactly what I need, nothing more and nothing less.

Those keybindings are prevalent outside of windows though, Ctrl+C is almost universally copy and Ctrl+V is almost universally paste - it might have been popularised by windows at some point in history but it’s well beyond that.

There’s an argument for consistency, especially with basic functions.

However, they usually own the house they live in, so don’t quite get sympathy from younger folks who are struggling just as much and can’t even get on the property ladder.

And according to the article, some of these are going on sale later this year.

Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

You make money by both selling more and spending less.

Think about it, you can have none money left over at the end of the month by working extra hours at your job or by spending less money on something - but what if you can’t work extra hours because there’s none available? And what if you need that extra cash at the end of the month? The only thing you can do is spend less.

Phil is kind of saying the same thing you’re saying here, but it’s not easy to just “sell more”, not when everyone else is struggling to have that extra cash to spend.

The games industry right now, as a whole, isn’t growing. That means companies are selling less. Phil end everyone else would love to sell more, by all means if you’ve got some solid ideas on how to do that then every games industry veteran out there will happily listen to you, but the sad and shitty reality is that sales are down and when you’re a business, if you can’t increase sales you’ve got to cut costs.

And that means job losses. It fucking sucks and we can have debates all day long about the merits of capitalism and all that, but that’s the reality of today. That’s the game. Phil is being honest and up front here, it’s a shitty game but he’s playing it and if he wasn’t playing it, someone else would.

Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

I think the argument about “for accessibility” is missing the point a little bit and a common mistake most developers make.

You should endeavour to make your interface accessible by default. You shouldn’t be thinking in terms of “okay here’s the design and here’s the design that’s accessible”, you should be considering accessibility in all of your designs.

Now that’s usually a bit harder with games because you have styles and themes that you don’t want to detract from, but if your interface causes accessibility issues, it’s generally going to be bad for people that don’t have accessibility needs as well.

Accessibility benefits everyone.

…I don’t mean to be rude, but you shouldn’t speak to things you do not understand or know about. Cloud hosting costs for a large e-commerce site are rather large, definitely variable and not cheap.

Cost of developing software is also not fixed over any meaningful period.

SNW has been an excellent show that I’ve greatly enjoyed, but each season has had one episode that stands out as being incredibly sub par.

In season one, it was that weird fantasy one that felt like an attempt at doing a holodeck episode without the holodeck.

In season two, it was the musical episode.

RuPaul had come under fire previously for being anti-trans, but it’s okay because they apologized on Twitter by posting the wrong flag (literally a flag for trains - and I’m not making that up).

Regardless of your stance on the issue of a bookstore with a no-banning-books mission not banning books, RuPaul clearly is not an ally and this isn’t surprising.

If I’m buying a sword, even if that sword is going to spend 99% of its time on a wall or in a display case, I still want to know that it feels good to hold, otherwise what’s the fucking point of owning a sword.

If I see a sick in the street, I’m going to do the exact same thing, I ain’t no expert, I just like to experience a little joy in my life where I can.

Anyone know a good mouse with a lot of side buttons, that isn't an MMO style? (lemmy.world)

My Razer Naga Pro died and I’m absolutely not buying another one for what it costs. But I also can’t seem to find a replacement with the same sort of layout this one had. Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

I have sworn off razer products specifically because of their software. The most egregious thing is their software installation automatically popping up and blocking during a Windows installation (including certain major upgrades). I realise this isn’t something that happens often, but setting off an install, then coming back a few hours later only to find a fucking razer EULA waiting for me to click accept before it’ll carry on through the remaining 75% of the OS installation was the last straw.

At one point they required you to sign into an account to use the software and at another point they decided to revamp their software, which meant dropping support for my keyboard but I needed it for my mouse so I was in this lovely halfway state where I could use one and not the other? It was fucked. Fuck razer.

The guy above you gives great advice. Set up SWAG, then the only ports you’re exposing are 443.

Once you have that set up, look at adding something like authelia. This will give you 2FA on top of those apps meaning even if someone guesses the password and the URL to access them, they still won’t be able to.

I think you’re missing the point, it’s not like people make mashed potato by churning a bunch of milk into butter.

I’d even suggest that butter is the more vital ingredient.
