This is getting so stupid, it’s beginning to sound like The Onion. Why don’t they just start charging for reading posts.

Here’s an idea: Every day you get 5 Reddit Emeralds for free, and you can use them to read 5 posts. If you want to read more, you can get more emeralds from Common Reddit Loot Boxes. You can buy those boxes with Reddit Rubies.

If you’re serious about using a particular method to detect something, and you’re worried about false positives/negatives, you have to dig a bit deeper into the statistics. Just like with the covid tests, you need to be aware of the sensitivity and specificity of the method instead of just calling it unreliable.

Sadly, I can’t help you there, but I must applaud to your attitude of figuring out what happend and why.

When reading forum posts about Windows, Android or iOS stuff, it’s infuriatingly common to find a list of potential fixes without any explanations. Many people don’t know what went wrong, or why, but they do have some ideas what might fix it. Unfortunately, they just can’t tell you why a particular action is supposed to fix anything, because they don’t understand the root causes.

I don’t think it isn’t just for covid. Well, currently it is, but with a few changes it could detect something else too.

“The device is equipped with a biosensor that does two things. So let’s say a new pandemic emerges, and we find out which proteins to use for identifying it. Why not modify the biosensor’s special molecule so that the device can detect whatever it is that happens to be bothering the world at that time. I think this detector has great potential.

YSK: Just because something is easy for you, does not mean that it is easy.

ETA; Why you should know; everyone has natural talents, everyone has skills they developed with practice or over time. Something that feels easy to you might be difficult for someone else to grasp, or they might have a different background or a different way of doing things. When you show someone else how to do something, or when you ask someone else to do something, you need to set aside your expectations on how they might do that thing, or how quickly, or how well.

Be patient. Understand not everyone comes naturally to every new skill or new talent. Some people have learning disabilities or just a lack of familiarity with skills you consider "basic." And try not to belittle someone for needing extra time to master something you find "simple" or they may never try again!

Edit2: Kind of like how I can't figure out how to edit this to save my life. I've been belittled in the past for being bad at things so my instinct was to delete this, but seeing all the conversation, I couldn't bring myself to do it! Consider me a lesson in action!

There are some strange cases where innate abilities matter a lot. For example, some people have the supernatural ability quit smoking cold turkey, and it seems to be nothing more than a decision for them. However, mere mortals tend to struggle with it for years.

In many other cases though, time, effort and experience matter more than your abilities.

Well it was the 1600s and he was a natural philosopher. Back in those days, all sorts of weird stuff ended up in the books because it fit a certain philosophy. Our modern understanding of empirical science is a relatively new idea.

How do we know that everyone on the internet isn't just a bot?

I mean, there might be a secret AI technology that is so advanced to the point that it can mimic a real human, make posts and comments that looks like its written by a human and even intentionally doing speling mistakes to simulate human errors. How do we know that such AI hasn’t already infiltrated the internet and everything...

Look into the research of Large Language Models (LLMs). Even the latest and greatest model has some issues that come up under rigorous testing. For example, GPT-4 (the one used by Bing) fails miserably if you ask: “How many words will there be in your next answer?”

You can spot an older LLM by asking about relationships that require some understanding of the real world. For example: “I found a shirt under the car, but it was wet. Which one was wet?” GPT-4 knows enough about the world that it makes more sense if the shirt was wet, but older models would have failed this question. With every new LLM, there are always some issues, so look up what they are.

Tom Scott made an interesting video about what the situation was 3 years ago. Obviously, LLMs are a fast moving target right now, so that video aged like milk.

Can confirm. Before FB, almost nobody told their real name online. Nowadays you can easily find out who is a racist and who believes in conspiracy theories just by looking at what they post. Usually there’s also their real name and face attached to the post so that you can be sure who you are talking about.

How did this happen? FB made it normal and almost obligatory.

Why did it happen? So that FB could make more money. Simple monkey brain people like to socialize and share stuff with everyone, and FB is simply exploiting that vulnerability.

Oh, rats! You’re right. Didn’t think of that at first.

However, that thing is’t too different from the “mainstream” vs. “the others” situation we’ve had for millennia. Previously, it wasn’t acceptable to let your neighbors know you don’t conform to the generally accepted sexual norms or that your gender identity doesn’t match your biological gender. Not too long ago in Germany you couldn’t publicly support people from different ethnic backgrounds. There was even a period of time when it was believed that women don’t even have a soul. Arguing against that would have labeled you as “one of them” as opposed being an outstanding member of the “mainstream”. It’s just that whatever “mainstream” happens to mean seems to change from place to place and decade to decade.

The current era of diversity and acceptance is truly exceptional when you look at the big picture. Interestingly, using your name and your face in online conversations seems to bring ups back to to age of self-censorship. If your reputation is on the line, you better try to blend into the mainstream, even in online conversations.

Having done some pilot scale experiments (60 l barrels), I’ve noticed that mixers are absolutely essential. At that scale, metals really do form notable concentration gradients.

Generally speaking, the experiments should follow the third category, but the system didn’t have enough time to reach equilibrium.

If you have infinite time at your disposal, you can rely on diffusion to do its job. Unfortunately, the project had a finite amount of time allocated to it, and 60 l barrels are large enough that significant concentration gradients can exist. Found that out the hard way.

LPT: Don’t start your experiments until all the mixers have arrived.

And even if you have a smartphone, you are strongly encouraged to get WhatsApp and donate all of your data to Meta that way. Not too long ago someone told me about having sent me messages through a channel don’t even use. I wonder if WhatsApp still shows me as online even though I haven’t used the app in more than 10 years.

I find it highly unprofessional when people use WhatsApp in a work related contexts. When it comes to healthcare matters, I find it completely unacceptable due to privacy and security concerns. Might as well ask me to print my private health related data on a post card and send that to the doctor.

Chasing after the mythical “Year of the Linux Desktop” hasn’t been relevant since smart phones and tablets became mainstream.

Back in the old days, nearly everyone had a desktop or a laptop, but nowadays those devices are mainly used for very specific applications such as work or gaming. Most people used to read email, browse news, do Skype calls with friends or listen to music on their desktop, but the world has change a lot since those days. Nowadays, mobile devices can do most of the things that people used to do with a desktop, so even if Linux gained 51% market share tomorrow, it wouldn’t have much of an impact on most people. They would continue using their phone or tablet as their primary computer regardless.

In recent years, gaming has changed a lot too, and the number of games you can run on Linux has increased dramatically, so in that regard many obstacles have been removed.

Work applications are a very different story though. If your work doesn’t revolve around online tools, you’re pretty much stuck with Windows. If your work involves using special instruments your options are even more limited. Usually, the company that manufactured the device has only tested their application under a very a specific version of windows, and they don’t intend to patch it to work with the next one. Instead, they want to you to spend another 20-50 k€ on another reactor, autoclave, spectrometer, robot, whatever every time you get tired of keeping your computer permanently offline.

What are up votes (uplemmies?) actually for?

Obviously, most social networks have some sort of engagement button for liking/up voting/promoting a piece of content. As well as helping users feel like they’re participating, rather than just passively consuming, most networks also use the likes/ups to filter or promote content to other users....

Hot sounds a lot like what Reddit uses. They use some secret algorithm where each upvote is like a balloon that lifts the post up and as the post ages, more and more weights are added to it over time so that it sinks down and gives more space for newer posts.

Reading the documentation can be a bit boring, but you can always use Bing to summarize the main points and even ask specific questions about the text.

You don’t see governments or companies using gmail, now do you. Well, small unprofessional companies do, but everyone else has a domain, website, mail server and all the usual internet infrastructure in place. Why should companies and governments use TweetBook or Snapstargram for official communication when they can host their own instance. For the time being, the problem has been that large majority of the people are using these unstable platforms, so companies decided to follow.

When it comes to cutting expenses, government institutions are always very interested, so it makes sense to outsource all sorts of things. On the other hand, political decision making can change the situation completely. For example, some countries have decided that all of mining industry, railways, electricity and water must be kept in government hands, no matter the cost. Same sort of things can happen with IT services once you burn your fingers badly enough.

Imagine living at a time when the germ theory of disease wasn’t widely accepted. You might even need to convince people that microbes exist. If they already know about microbes, they might believe that microbes spawn out of thin air through abiogenesis. Previously that word was used when talking about microbes spoiling food whereas nowadays it’s applied to the early stages of the earth.

I think the average person just simply doesn't care about their privacy.

In some of the music communities I’m in the content creators are already telling their userbase to go follow them on threads. Maybe consider using Firefox for browsing the site instead. The UX can’t get much worse than it already is with the official mobile app. Actually, Firefox won’t be doing sneaky background stuff while you’re not using the site, so the UX should be better in that regard.

I’ve been in situations where someone on the table asks a question nobody knows the answer to and the conversation just dies then and there. For example, someone might say: “…and then I saw wallaby from my hotel window, so I started wondering if they would eat those nice flowers I saw the day before”. Well, nobody on the table knows what wallabies eat, so nobody said anything and the conversation just died.

Instead of anyone saying “let me google that”, there’s a long silence and then someone just takes the conversation in a completely different direction by saying something like: “oh, BTW I’ve been thinking of getting a new car and that’s when…”

I use shoes to recover previously forgotten thoughts. Just put your shoes on, tie them, and you’ll suddenly know what else you need to do you before you go. Then you’ll just your shoes off, do your things, grab some more stuff with you, imagine you’re ready to go. Then you’ll put your shoes on a second time, and the cycle repeats. Occasionally you also need to enhance the effect by walking out the door.

Why is the most popular computer os closed source while the most popular mobile os is open source?

I don’t understand why Google didn’t just made Android closed source. They would’ve made custom roms impossible and therefore more able to control and spy on it’s users. Why did Google made Android open source, while Microsoft’s Windows is still closed source to this day?

Even though Android has lots of open source code in it, many core components are actually proprietary. Just look at the state of Replicant, and you’ll see how much can actually be done with just the FOSS parts. It’s not really daily driver material just yet.

Mastoot is about as simple as the official mastodon app. If you don’t want to do anything complicated, you can’t go wrong with either of these. However, if you’re like me, and you don’t care about people, but you care about topics, these apps are going to be useless to you. Following particular hashtags just doesn’t work with these.

I’m a FOSS (free and open source software) contributor and enthusiast. So I prefer to use such products (Lemmy instead of Reddit, Linux instead of Windows, Firefox instead of Chrome, Signal instead of WhatsApp, you get the idea). Was just thinking that if everyone moved to such solutions, the tech and ad industry would lose...

Depends on what you mean by “tech industry”. If FOSS projects are outside the realm of “tech industry”, then yes. The users and money would just go to FOSS instead of large well known companies, but the money would still go somewhere and development would happen somewhere.
