Who reads this anyway? Nobody, that’s who. I could write just about anything here, and it wouldn’t make a difference. As a matter of fact, I’m kinda curious to find out how much text can you dump in here. If you’re like really verbose, you could go on and on about any pointless…[no more than this]

Couldn’t you just subscribe for a month, download the videos and cancel the subscription? Just slap a new 2 TB hard disk on your computer and start downloading 24/7 until the disk is full. Surely that’s enough stuff to watch for several months.

The kWh is a silly unit. Joule (J) is the one true unit of energy.

Also, common time units suck as much as inches, pounds, feet and whatever nonsense units you Americans still use. Just use seconds with the appropriate SI prefix instead.

Cubic meters and tonnes suck too. Just use kl and Mg instead.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Well, we could always switch to another time unit that uses 1 day as the base unit. Then you would just use md, nd, Gd, Md and all the other prefixes to get to the scale you need. That would be fine for most purposes.

However, the problem is that a day isn’t exactly 86.4 ks, since orbits and rotations are wobbly and messy. If we define the day as a unit today, it won’t be the same a thousand years later. Perhaps the people of the future could use that for common purposes, but scientists would need to use a more precise version that has a crazy litany of decimals at the end. Using the Earth as a foundation for any kind of unit is just asking for trouble in the long run.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I can see the convenience in the Wh unit, because hours are so common and people prefer to think in terms of hours.

Joules and watts look nicer and are naturally fully compatible with each other. Non-technical people usually get very confused with kW and kWh, so switching to joules would create a clearer distinction between energy and power. Many energy production facilities also give their annual energy production in MWh per year, which mixes two time units in the same package!

Long story short, the HAARP nonsense has its origins in psychology. If you want the long version, check this article. It also answers how conspiratorial thinking in general works, not just the nut jobs spreading wild stories about HAARP.

Because these delusions are based on defects of the mind, there’s no amount of facts that you can throw at this problem and expect it to be fixed that way. What wasn’t reasoned in, can’t be reasoned out of a broken mind like that. These people are in need therapy and support more than anything else.

If podcasts, are more your thing, consider listening to You’re not so smart - episode 197 conspiratorial thinking. I think the part about the history of small and large conspiracies was particularly fascinating. Grand conspiracies are impossibly difficult to pull off, because there’s always a weak link somewhere which will make the whole thing collapse sooner or later. On the other hand, small conspiracies are a reality, and there have been numerous documented cases of those happening in real life.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Well, I know someone with a PhD in chemistry, and he still believes the covid vaccine is designed to kill people, cause a global collapse and all that. The human mind just is never truly safe from this type of thinking.

Hamartiogonic , (edited )
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar
  1. people die
  2. society collapses
  3. ???
  4. profit

That’s the basic pattern for most conspiracies anyway. I’m still wondering how the conspiracy theorists expect billionaires will make even more money by cutting the human population to a tiny fraction of its current number. Well, I guess I’m just not smart enough to see the hidden truth or whatever.

Bits are nice and simple, whereas bytes can get really messy. Hurrah for historical baggage again.

This article just went with the binary prefixes, which makes sense for a sort article like this. Unfortunately, out there in the real world you’ll also encounter SI prefixes and some systems don’t even it clear which system they are using.

Even if your organization is ok with it, other companies might not be. Eventually you’ll have to communicate with people from other companies, which means you can’t avoid Teams forever.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

For the most part, that’s true. However, there are also some situations when I’ve had to set up a new team that includes members from outside the company. We use those teams for messages, announcement posts and meetings. Normally, those teams involve universities, contractors or consultants.

People who back into parking spots: Why?

To me, it seems objectively easier to pull into a parking space forward and then back out of the space when you are ready to leave. You don’t have to line up with the lines while driving backwards, and it’s easier to keep from hitting other cars as well. So why back in? To me, the only advantage I can think of is that you...

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

All sorts of crazy stuff happens in parking areas. When someone pulls kamikaze-style parking maneuvers, you a really don’t want that to happen behind you where it’s difficult to see what’s going on.

I think the appropriate procedure depends on the ratio of true/false positives/negatives. This is basically the same discussion that occurred with covid tests, because the mathematics behind are identical. Looking at the Positive/Negative Predictive Value should give you an idea how much you should trust each assessment.

Based on the articles we’ve seen recently, it seems that the false positives are the main problem here, so perhaps the PPV isn’t high enough. Ideally, you would combine two types of methods so that at the end of the day you’ll get to a very high PPV and NPV. However, I’m pretty sure humans have a very low NPV. Hopefully, the PPV is a lot higher, but racism clearly isn’t helping here. Augmenting that appalling mess with a flawed system is still a step forward IMO. Well, at least it would be if the system wasn’t used to oppress and discriminate people.

My rule of thumb when Excel is still just fine:

  1. The data fits on the screen. Roughly 40x30 matrices are fine. These rules aren’t set in stone, so there are situations when it’s still justified to use matrices larger than that.
  2. You can see all the sheets you need. Roughly 10-14 sheets. If you need more sheets than that, you should probably split the calculation into several files.
  3. You need complicated VBA macros and you need them to run perfectly every time. In my experience, this programming language is infuriatingly unpredictable and unreliable. Random things happen all the time and no amount of debugging is able to solve these types of cosmic problems.

You can go beyond those general guidelines, but using everything gets more and more annoying the further you go. Pretty soon you’ll realize it would have been better to build the whole thing in Python, R or something else. Once the file size hits 15 MB you know you’ve gone way too far and it’s about time you rebuilt the whole calculation using some nicer tool. I try to switch as soon as possible when I realize my calculations are about to grow beyond these limits.

Feudalism: A lord owns the land and the trees growing in it. He has a bunch of peasants who will pick the apples for him. The lord gets all the apples and the peasants are allowed to live on his lands another day. Later that night, they go work on their own farms that hopefully give them enough food to keep going. In the long term they’ll probably starve to death or get kicked out of the house they themselves built. I guess living as s hunter-gatherer in the forest isn’t that bad compared to the other alternatives.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

How well do you speak those languages? For example, can you order pizza with pineapple and olives in any of those languages? What if the pizza you get is cold, there’s only one olive on it and the crust is soggy, could you get your complaints through in any language?

Or perhaps will the explanation be more like: “Pizza bad, no good. Want money back.”

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

That’s pretty cool. Took a quick look at the relationships those languages have, and it seems that Malay is the odd one out, all the others are in the sinitic family. I would expect that if you learn one, your mind isn’t going to explode if you try to learn the other two. However, Malay is completely different, so jumping into that world may require some extra effort.

To give a European example, if you already know Norwegian, learning Swedish it’s only one step away. Jumping into Danish or German at that point can be done, but it will require some extra effort. A similar situation exists between Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

Levitation is a fun way to demonstrate that you’ve got a superconductor. That’s not the only way to make things levitate, so not all levitating things are superconductors.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Diamagnetic materials are also pretty nice. However, normally you would use 4 magnets to make a tiny flake of carbon levitate, so using that to fake a superconductor might be too obvious.

There are also financial incentives to oppose the adoption of content generating AI. As the spinning jenny replaced hand spinning and electric trolleys replaced horse drawn streetcars, there was always strong financially motivated opposition. How is it different this time?

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I was thinking of.

Let’s say your borrow a bunch of books from the local library and read them in order to refine your writing skills. Later, you’ll write a book that is more or less inspired by all of the books you’ve previously read. Do you owe something to the hundreds of authors you got inspired by? Even if you bought those books, do you think the other authors would could still demand something extra because clearly those books weren’t really used for mere entertainment. Instead, they were used to train a new writer.

If it hasn’t happened already, I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a lawsuit about this sort of thing. Then the judge would need to figure out if there’s a difference between a human reading a book for entertainment and training to become a writer.

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I see that as a pro and a con. If one narcissist manages to get to a position of authority, they can’t derail the whole network. That also means that people can form their own echo chamber islands of like-minded instances. There could be the main island of random interests and then a separate extremist island of all the instances that got defederated from all the big instances. Not an ideal solution, but it’s still better than a fully centralized Reddit.

You call that an unstable compound that doesn’t want to exist. Hydrogen peroxide is constantly looking for an excuse to decompose back into water and oxygen. Making it is like rolling a barrel uphill. As soon as you let go, the barrel will roll back down to the bottom of the valley.

“You‘re The Snake

The snake animal meaning is powerfully connected to life force and primal energy. In many cultures, it is revered as a powerful totem representing the source of life.

When the snake spirit animal appears in your life, it likely means that healing opportunities, change, important transitions, and increased energy are manifesting.”

I don’t really know how this spirit animal thing works, but that’s the answer I got from some online quiz. If it’s on the internet, it has to be true, right.

I know the feeling. I tried using a de-googled LineageOS for a while, but it just wasn’t viable because today’s world simply isn’t compatible with this lifestyle any more. I wish this technology had existed back in 2010, because I would have been completely free of Google. Living without all the fancy apps and stuff would have been fine, but living without money… that’s where I draw the line.

What a coincidence, today I stumbled upon just the right book for situations like this.

Maybe later... how about never, you fucks?

It is endlessly frustrating that companies have universally decided that they won’t let people say “no” to stuff, ever. There are no longer options to reject stupid-ass new “features”, only postponement until next time you open the app/website/program. They’ll continue pestering you for the rest of your life. I...

I don’t have a printer at home, and I’ve been just fine. Nowadays you don’t even need to print tickets, so who cares about a printer any more. 1. If you go to the inbox and tap a comment, you’re supposed to go to that comment, right. Most apps do that just fine even if it’s a long thread, but mlem just kinda throws you in there somewhere and you’re left to figure out where that one new comment actaully is.
  2. Once you’ve read that comment, you go back to the inbox and that old message is supposed to go away while the unread ones will remain. With most apps this works reasonably well, but with Mlem it’s a bit random.
  3. If you find an interesting post with a picture, you might want to zoom into it. With all the other apps you can do that, but Mlem doesn’t have zooming yet.
  4. What if you wrote a hasty comment and you realize there’s a typo or a factual mistake. With all the other apps you can just edit that comment, but Mlem doesn’t have the editing feature.
  5. Have you ever wondered how many downvotes a comment or a post has received? With some apps you can actually see that, but Mlem isn’t one of them.
  6. Usually on Lemmy you’ll find links to interesting articles, but once you click them you might want to use a very specific browser such as Firefox Focus or something. With most Lemmy apps you don’t even have that option, and Mlem is in that crowd.

Other than those points, Melem is a solid Lemmy app, and I’ll be keeping an eye on its development.
