I have very mixed feelings about Trump. Obviously, he really isn’t good for any country, so I hope he doesn’t get re-elected. Just throw him in the jail already. Unfortunately, I can’t deny the fact that on some sick and twisted schadenfreude way I also enjoyed watching the first four seasons of the Shitshow. Oh, what a rollercoaster that was.

Star ratings are very broken, because everyone seems to think of the rating differently. IMO the criteria should be like this:

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ = The best thing ever.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⚫️ = Above average.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⚫️ ⚫️ = It’s ok. Get’s the job done. Not great, not terrible. The usual. Nothing special. Totally average.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⚫️ ⚫️ ⚫️ = Below average. I’m disappointed.

⭐️ ⚫️ ⚫️ ⚫️ ⚫️ = Worst thing ever. Crime against humanity. Ban this product and burn the remaining stock immediately.

However, in reality people tend to use it like this.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ = It’s ok. I don’t have anything to complain about. Could be ok, could be great or anything in between.

⭐️ I’m not happy. Minor complaints, big complaints and anything in between.

When it comes to book reviews, the five star reviews tend to be useless. Especially when it comes to self help books, it seems like those reviews were made by people who are completely incapable of noticing any flaws in the book. I’m inclined to think those people shouldn’t even review a book if they can’t think of it critically. On Amazon there are always lots and lots of fake reviews produced in a click farm, but in other places you’ll also find genuinely incompetent reviewers too.

Then how do you tell the difference between a good product and a great product? For example, imagine you’re comparing an electric screwdriver from Lidl (parkside) and Boch. Should they both get 5 stars because nothing is broken and they get the job done?

Many startup companies run mostly on VC money instead of actually making enough revenue.

Due to the way investor money works, you can keep your company running on VC money for many years. Making the company profitable in the early stages isn’t entirely necessary as long as the investors get their money back within a reasonable time period.

The idea is, that if you’re able to make your shiny new service very popular, that will be the valuable product you can eventually sell in a merger, IPO or whatever. In some cases like Skype, the intellectual property was also an important part of the deal; not just the userbase. After that, the new owners are free to enshitify the service as much as they like. It’s their problem to make the service actually profitable in the long run while the founders get to drive their Lamorghinis in Dubai.

That’s when the new owners really have to crank up the data leeching and ads, which will kick out a decent percentage of the previous users, but that’s ok as long as enough of them remain.

Having gone through conscription military, I have leveled up some very important abilities.

Looking busy: I can find convincing ways to spend time without actually doing anything important.

Wasting time: When nobody is looking, I can find creative and fun ways to pass the time. (this ability is maxed out)

Also gained a few special perks.

Forest fun: Who needs movies, games or the internet when you have an axe and some wood. Even pine cones, rocks and sticks will be enough to keep you preoccupied in creative ways.

Day dreaming: Who needs the forest, when you can build countless universes in your mind.

Oh, and I did learn to shoot and keep my rifle in working order. I guess that’s nice too. Didn’t get to level that anywhere near as much, but that’s ok.

Some time in the 90s several computers of an office were stolen that way. Some guys just parked a van right in front of the front door and started loading the van with computers. Those machines weren’t cheap back in those days, so these guys just got away with some pretty nice loot. All you have to do is walk in with a determined look and everyone will assume you’re simply doing your job.

Normal TV is infuriating enough that I can’t be bothered to watch any of that stuff. Watching videos on a computer is just so much nicer. If TV broadcasting stopped tomorrow and everyone around me was in a conspiracy of hiding it from me, it could take me years to find out.

YouTube has been going downhill for many years now, and there have been many incremental steps towards becoming as bad as TV. If they take that final step, I’ll start treating YT the same way I treat TV.

You know those videos with a crazy thumbnail and title? You know, some stupid idiot BS clickbait nonsense like guy wrestling with a crocodile, but in reality that frame doesn’t even exist anywhere in the video. Oh, and then there’s the big red arrow and a wild title like: A CROCODILE BIT MY HEAD OFF!!!111!!!

Well, dearrow can fix all that. Users can select are more representative frame for the thumbnail and write a better title such as: “collection of random cat videos stolen from other people”. People get to vote on which thumbnail and which title text should be there, while dearrow shows that to the next person. If you care about cat videos, you might click that one. If you’re more interested in crocodile wrestling, you won’t be deceived to click something you don’t want to watch.

I think this mess is just a sign of a company experiencing growing pains. Seems like they are still figuring out what kind of processes the company needs to have and who is the right person for each task. When a company grows quickly you tend to bump into (or more like crash into) unexpected issues like this. In the case of LMG, it got particularly nasty, but I’m glad they are finally addressing the issues.

The situation got really bad because the company didn’t have what it takes to notice and intervene in time. Once they have noticed the problem, they should work to prevent it from happening in the future. Perhaps they need to fire people who don’t have manners. All of this applies to lots of other issues too; not just sexual assault, harassment etc. That’s why I was mainly focussing on the big picture rather than a single category of problems.

Fortunately though, they have already built processes to prevent certain issues from arising in the future, but obviously there’s still a lot they need to do in this regard. The way I see it, that’s a clear sign of growing pains in general.

That’s literally what I thought about installing Chrome and sharing my browsing history with Google. Why would I get a Facebook account and share my name, my face and my daily activities with the entire world. I thought that this is just pure insanity, and nobody will ever go along with this level of stupidity. Oh, boy was I in for a surprise.

Look who is laughing now that Chrome is the number one browser and many websites are only tested on Chrome. FB has so many users that people think it’s really odd that I’m not there with everyone else.

Giving your ID to Twitter is indeed on a whole different level. I would never do it, and a lot of people here seem to agree with me.

However, in my previous example I’m pointing out that there are a surprising number of people who don’t see it that way. Just because you and I would never do it, doesn’t mean much. There are always people who just don’t care about privacy or security.

Maybe they don’t know much, or understand what they’re doing, or maybe the social pressure is so great that they feel like they have to get an account. Either way, I would argue that the number of those people is disappointingly high.

Apple was a very different company back then. If they had followed the philosophy they have today, Apple would have been the last company to to introduce a mouse. The idea is that if a new feature becoms industry standard, they won’t apply it until like 5 years later, but make it somehow better than anyone else.

In this context, it would have probably meant not including a keyboard or display at this point. They could have skipped the black+green stage and go straight for color displays while increasing the resolution, size and refresh rate or something.

Thanks for the link. That was interesting. If I read that correctly, it seems to prove that enniatin B has been found in human livers. That compound appears to linger in the tissue long enough that it can be detected, but I didn’t notice any reference to that level being safe or unsafe. I guess it’s up to other studies to explore the LD50 now that we know it can be found in the liver.

If there’s a system for doing something, there’s always a way to make it do things it isn’t supposed to do. I can’t imagine that I’m the first person to think that there must be a way to save those files in a nicer format. Surely someone has already made a program that either saves the files or converts them into mp4 or whatever.

If you’re upgrading your laptop, find one with an intel wifi chip. Broadcom and Atheros may work, but be prepared for some headaches.

Intel and AMD video chips are also well supported. Avoid nvidia stuff.

Oh, I totally forgot about the chaos surrounding bits and bytes. Personally, I don’t really care which one we use, as long as its unified. Mixing and matching Mb/s for transfer and MiB for storage is truly infuriating. Yes, even the prefixes need to be unified.

I don’t make programs in low level languages, such as assembly, so I don’t really see the benefit of using base 1024 prefixes. If anyone here can convince me why non-binary prefixes are great, I’m listening. As far as I’m concerned, prefixes should be based on 1000, just like in SI.

Having 8 bits in a byte is just another historical relic, and I see no reason to keep it. Systems have changed many times since the adoption of that term, and back in the early days a single character of text took exactly 8 bits. I guess that was important at the time, but why would it be today? Programmers out there can tell us why we need to have two units for data.
