I agree that they are effective programs for getting work done. There are some drawbacks in a professional setting though, the biggest being the data scraping that has been introduced. It’s hard to explain to clients that any licensing of their images has been violated before it has even been applied. Either Adobe are going to get away with exactly the kind of IP infringements that they are so against when it comes to their own work, or they’re lining up a buggerload of legal problems for themselves further down the line.

Then there’s the price-gouging that they’ve gotten into with their online subscription model and instability on some hardware.

How to trust them?

For people starting a new business in a creative industry I don’t think Adobe is the obvious choice that it once was.

Churbleyimyam ,

Is it because their planes keep falling apart or because they keep murdering people?

Mono/stereo problem with videos files. How to fix?

I have some video files which have stereo audio tracks that were created from a mono source. I think the mono signal got sent to the right channel and not the left because when I created the files in OBS I forgot to select mono audio recording. When I play the videos all the sound is on right side only. Hope that makes sense…...

Churbleyimyam ,

Sounds like that Austrian guy who was caught having taken the covid vaccine hundreds of times.

Churbleyimyam ,

I work with print a lot too. Very interested in the imminent release of GIMP 3.0 with it’s colour upgrades.

Churbleyimyam ,

GIMP 3.0 should be out this year. If you’re interested, you can already use some of the new features (like true non-destructive editing) by running the development version.

www.gimp.org/news/2024/…/gimp-2-99-18-released/

Churbleyimyam ,

No worries :) It’s a big release and is gonna really bring GIMP up to date. I’m super excited about it!

Churbleyimyam ,

I actually think that it wouldn’t take too many more people using GIMP for the name of the program to be considered the primary meaning of the word in English.

I’ve seen a few posts and comments made by ‘tankies’ (I had to look up this term, as I’ve never seen it outside of Lemmy) and I don’t think there should be such a moral panic about them. It implies that everyone is so impressionable that they can’t be exposed to a minority fringe political opinion without being instantly turned into a rabid and dangerous extremist.

See something you don’t agree with? Ignore it. Downvote it. Block it if you really want to. So many people seem to come here just looking for a fight with other users or to get some general outrage out of their system, whether it’s ‘tankies’ or ‘anti-tankies’. Just relax. Lemmy is diverse and ever-expanding; there’s loads of fun, interesting and positive stuff to see and talk about here.

I will mention that smaller, niche communities have way more harmonious and interesting discussions. This suggests to me that the majority of aggro comes from people who are just logging in and scrolling down the ‘front page’ for something to do. It’s worth putting in a bit of effort to find specific topics you’re interested in and then looking at the feed of your subscriptions. It’s a much better experience for everyone.

Edited for bad grammarring.

Churbleyimyam ,

Then it would be nice if they could chill out and not take themselves so seriously. Good to know if they’re making the discussion shit by removing stuff though, as we can just use different communities.

Churbleyimyam ,

Specifically, the survey asked them to assess the accuracy of the statement that the CDC has said there is no evidence linking vaccines to autism.

That is an such a poorly conceived question for a researcher to pose. I don’t even know what else to say tbh.

I shake my head.

Churbleyimyam ,

I admire your brave attempt at writing in a second language.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy’s massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It’s been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let’s say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they’re what’s colloquially referred to...

Churbleyimyam ,

If their community mods ban enough people, won’t they eventually no longer have the biggest communities?

Churbleyimyam ,

Pourquoi?

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year’s $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

Churbleyimyam ,

Cool. I trust that extra money will be going to the artists who upload their music!

Churbleyimyam ,

Check out Jan AI. It’s open source and extremely easy to install and run. I run it locally on a 2017 laptop without a dedicated GPU and it works, just takes longer to generate responses compared to something like ChatGPT.

Churbleyimyam ,

What would make it easier to donate for things which have been freely distributed as torrents? Some links in a bundled text file?

Churbleyimyam ,

Audacity isn’t open source? I thought I installed it from the Debian free repo…

Churbleyimyam ,

You should totally get on some PS forums and start bitching about its UI being ‘backward and unusable’ compared to GIMP :)

Churbleyimyam ,

Ah, monkey business…

Churbleyimyam ,

Even supposing I didn’t care about the security implications of this, why on earth would I want this functionality? I can barely keep up with all my activities in the present moment, let alone the past. It’s like a morbid and pathological unification of nostalgia and hoarding.

Churbleyimyam ,

“Even a blind pig can find an acorn every once in a while.”

Churbleyimyam ,

Check out Freetube. Also Newpipe on Android.

Churbleyimyam ,

I’m with you. I have similar relationship with connected devices as I do with cigarettes.

I don’t like being threatened by the state but banning something has a bonus effect of making it look dirty.

Churbleyimyam ,

Nice to hear some positivity, especially about school.

Churbleyimyam ,

A bit dark!

Churbleyimyam ,

When I was at school we weren’t allowed to eat in class. One day we had a supply teacher who caught a kid trying to eat a sandwich. The teacher confiscated the sandwich and ate it at the front of the class.

Now imagine if it had been a phone: kid tries to use phone, teacher confiscates phone, teacher tries to root phone and bricks it in the process. “You can have this back at the end of the day.”

Churbleyimyam ,

They should build Faraday cages around all schools, so they dont have to ban phones.

Churbleyimyam ,

They should have a fat radio jammer in the head teachers office.

Churbleyimyam ,

I wonder how many comments on Lemmy were written out under a desk in class.

Churbleyimyam ,

Enough power to make the law having broken the law, and enough incompetence to have not covered your tracks.

Churbleyimyam ,

it is what it is. nobody believes in the system anymore anyway. thanks for the spectacle i guess

Churbleyimyam ,

Shaboy

Churbleyimyam ,

Maybe if electric motorcycles can become more popular the noise issue will lessen.

Churbleyimyam ,

Man, I absolutely love driving within the speed limit and seeing a big queue of would-be speeders gradually building up behind me.

Churbleyimyam ,

There is an anti-car community somewhere on Lemmy. Will look for the link.

Churbleyimyam ,

Just be a hardware company with a publishing division like you used to be. The tech monopolies rose and fell while you were asleep; let us just enjoy our games now.

Churbleyimyam ,

It’s like getting a girlfriend who starts nagging you before you’ve even fallen in love with her.

A good kit IMO, in order of priority:

  • Cherrytree; nominally for making hierarchical lists but you can basically use it as a wiki for your entire life. You can theme it yourself too, if you think it looks too retro out of the box.
  • Syncthing, for keeping files synced between devices without having to use a server.
  • Qbittorrent, for getting files you need. Remember to install search plugins.
  • KeepassXC. Password manager (local, not on a server, use in combination with Syncthing).
  • Convertall, for unit conversions.
  • Calibre, for managing an ebook library, converting formats, removing DRM, transferring to ereader etc.
  • Rhythmbox, for music library, podcasts, internet radio.
  • Shotwell, for photo and video library. Easy to use, supports tags (metadata written to image files).
  • GIMP, for image manipulation. It’s extremely versatile, comprehensive and versatile. 3.0 is due out soon and will include non-destructive layer effects. Heavyweight piece of software, so expect a learning curve.
  • Ardour, for music production. Heavyweight, steep learning curve.
  • Flowblade for video production. Lightweight, easy to learn.
  • Libreoffice, desktop publishing.
  • Librewolf; privacy-focussed web browser.
  • Thunderbird; highly organisable email client.
  • Freetube, for watching youtube videos without all the ads and tracking. Local subscriptions and playlists, which you can export to use with Newpipe on Android. Also lets you download video and audio.

If you like the terminal also add:

  • ranger; file manager
  • newsboat; RSS feed reader
  • yt-dl; download videos from youtube and many other sites ;)
  • w3m; command line web browser. I like to use this in combination with newsboat.

Enjoy!

Churbleyimyam ,

OK thanks, will check it out :)

Churbleyimyam ,

You just need to loosen off the grub screw, which is now in a data center in Ireland.

Churbleyimyam ,

They’re not actually intended for washing your hands but rather for ticking the ‘customer hand-washing facility available’ box and providing jobs for interior designers nephews.
