People have finally noticed. The Conservative party is on track to get utterly pulverised at this years general election. And if Labour don’t have serious ideas about fixing things the same will happen to them at the next one.

I don’t even need to vote tactically at this election to keep the Conservatives out. But I will because I want to see them and everything they stand for wiped off the face of British politics. They need to be punished as badly as possible and made an example of for destroying everything that our forebears sacrificed to give us.

I have to use windows at work, which is the absolute worst place for it. When I’m busy and trying to keep up with getting shit done it makes me really stressed out having get past all these popups, which always seem to happen at the worst possible moment.

Yeah. Someone needs to make a ublock origin zapper for the windows operating system. If I could do something like alt-click any object and make it instantly fuck off out of the computer I could get more work done and be more patient with my customers.

Ultimately my boss is paying microsoft for their bloatware once when he pays for his windows licence and again when I have to bat it away on the clock before I can do my work.

I joined mastodon just before a big twitter exodus because I was getting into open source, via privacy, and quitting commodity social media. I got Lemmy and Pixelfed accounts not long afterwards because I was passionate about the fediverse. I’m only logged in to fediverse social media now. It’s not perfect (it’s still social media after all) but it has so much more integrity and feels more real, especially pixelfed which is an absolute peach and which I hope never changes! I mostly enjoy memes and shitposts here on Lemmy but it’s also getting pretty good for mutual help and advice in some communities, which I think is the most valuable thing about this format of social media.

Web browsers and email are currently people’s bedrock interface with the internet and Firefox (and to a lesser extent Thunderbird) are the only such mainstream applications which remain outside the complete dominance of commodification.

We might disagree with some things that Mozilla have done but they are in the increasingly unique position of having to maintain integrity and accessibility in a constantly narrowing space. That’s because we, as users, keep using them, keep supporting them and keep demanding the best of them.

Yeah that is problem. It did just make me think though: I read recently about a UK project to build a solar farm in the Moroccan desert the size of greater London and lay undersea cables all the way back to southwest England. They claim it will be half the cost of the new Hinkley C reactor, which is just up the road and that includes building from scratch the ship to lay the cables. Now, instead of having this solar farm to the south, in a similar timezone, what if it could be to the east or west? There is already an international grid in this part of the world, so perhaps if it was extended, there could be renewable energy coming in from wherever, whenever it was being produced. The sun is usually out and the wind blowing somewhere. That would reduce the burden of storage. It would also require a high level of cooperation and trust, which has its pros and cons.

I’m actually quite glad about this. Currently Pixelfed is absolutely beautiful, without me having to do any blocking at all. I don’t want spammy low-key commercial posts to start showing up on it, turning me cynical and sour trying to work out who is legit on it. The whole culture of mainstream social media is based on people commodifying themselves, whereas Pixelfed is about artistic expression for its own sake. That’s my own take on it anyway. For me, Pixelfed is the best thing on the internet at the moment and I feel protective of it!

My kids won’t have access to youtube (or even the internet) for as long as I can make that happen. If they absolutely MUST watch something on a screen it will be downloaded nature documentaries, episodes of Sesame Street, or maybe really old Disney animations.
