howtovote.co.uk was probably the site, but it’s not been updated since 2015.

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

The focus these days seems to be on tactical voting… Maybe that’s why it hasn’t been updated?

Apparently this is the one thing which is controlled by a single gene, and works as you were taught in school with dominant and recessive traits.

Nothing else does, including the things you were taught like eye and hair colour - they are much more complicated.

Hmm, maybe it’s one per ear?!

Morrisons used to do “buy as many eggs as you like”. It was ace! I haven’t been in there for a while so don’t know if they’ve stopped. But basically you could take a box and take as many eggs as you liked.

They were near the fruit and veg rather than with the other eggs (in Bedford, anyway).

Hopefully they’re still doing this.

I don’t think I’ve ever used Dear to start an email; always Hi for as long as I remember.

I don’t like To, it always seems like a command rather than a greeting. I write it on cards and stuff but it always leaves a niggling feeling of wrongness.

Yeah, that’s the sort of thing which worries me. I suppose if it’s a recipe which doesn’t need precise measurements it doesn’t matter.

Not quite the same as Stones and Kilogrammes are both units of weight. Using cups is like weighing somebody using those luggage size baskets in the airport.

i_am_not_a_robot OP ,

Some good answers here, thanks everyone, I’ve learnt some stuff today. 🙂

i_am_not_a_robot OP ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

I’m amazed they are that uncommon. Here (UK) you can walk into a supermarket and pick them up for less than £20.

i_am_not_a_robot OP ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Depends what it is. In this instance I was buying cups of fruit, how many cups are there to a punnet? I already have the weight on the packaging, so if I know the weight I need it’s much easier.

i_am_not_a_robot OP ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

If it calls for 200g of aubergine, then you can weigh that at the shop… It’s more convenient at that end, and you can get the right amount.

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Depends how many sugars. At least three heaped teaspoons should qualify, two is borderline.

I was going to mention this! I don’t think it meets the criteria completely, but it is quite Souls-like in many aspects.

Thoughts on pinboard's viability?

Been using Marcin’s beautifully created bookmark manager since yahoo killed delicious. It was yahoo that bought it right? I digress. Anyway, I’ve been paying for his service since he mentioned it would be helpful if the old users also contributed BUT the site’s downtime has been rough and unpredictable lately. It’s just...

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t know anything about Pinboard, but if you do decide to change you might want to look at the Fediverse enabled Postmarks.

There’s also some sort of soft blocking option, which largely hides the instance AIUI but still gives the ability to follow users. This seems like a better option rather than completely defederating.

If Meta want to scrape your data they can do that anyway. All defederation does is stops you looking at their stuff (which, as you say, can be blocked at the user level anyway)

The Mistborn Trilogy (start with The Final Empire) by Brandon Sanderson is superb.

After that initial trilogy they are a massive struggle, but the first three are well worth reading.

i_am_not_a_robot ,

To be fair, they say the previous books they’ve enjoyed have been short… Not that they want to read something short this time! But point taken.

A bit like the Channel Islands - they use British Pounds but if you try to use them on the mainland they’ll not be accepted. Other way round is fine.

Is there a unified scanner (the hardware) driver like what we have for printers?

I’m building a sw that should be able to read the papers read from a scanner and process them with a minimal user interaction, basically I don’t want the user to jump into another sw, output an image or doc, and insert that into my sw, this kind of problem seems to be fixed when it comes to printers printing, but I...

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Yes, you can now use AirScan (also called something else I don’t recall currently) for “driverless” scanning.

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

No, it’s a cross platform standard. You can even run a server on Linux interfacing with SANE to convert older scanners.

I looked up the non-Apple name and it’s eSCL. That’s a lot easier to search for.

I know you can change the images in Windows 95 so you could replace the proper one with this. I suspect the messages in Windows 10/11 are a bit more sophisticated though!

I suspect that one was banned back in 2005 (if it’s even valid, not sure the “I” is used?)

‘The worst film ever made’: how Sex Lives of the Potato Men broke British cinema (www.theguardian.com)

When the puerile comedy bombed, the film-makers blamed the critics and the Tories blamed the UK Film Council. Twenty years on, we reassess the legacy of a cinematic pariah whose champions include Stewart Lee and Mike Leigh

Yeah, ear drops (try Otex brand in the UK), they tickle and fizzle and pop and it feels amazing. You have to use them quite a few times to clear the ear and sometimes it gets worse before it gets better.

I’ve also just started listening to Mythical Creatures.

Me and internet funeral

Hey, FUCKER here. For the people who actually remember me, yes I’m still alive. If you’re wondering why I stopped posting, it was a combination of things, but it was mostly caused by my deteriorating motivation to do anything recently. Thank you for this community, the important thing is to take care of yourself. Speaking personally, I had a similar thing last year and it turned out to be depression, so you might want to seek a diagnosis in case it’s not just burnout.

What Meta’s Fediverse Plans Mean for Threads Users (www.wired.com)

Meta is treading carefully, doing a phased implementation while continuing conversations with Fediverse leaders. This will give the company more time to iron out some of the integration kinks. “Do we adapt the protocol to be able to support this?” Lambert asks. “Or do we try to do some kind of interesting, unique...

I had a car with a leaky radiator. I would fill it up with water in the morning and drive to work. If I didn’t it would start overheating. I don’t remember filling it again on the way back. Put up with that for weeks. I think I only got it fixed because the weather warmed up and it was no longer sufficient to cool it. Or maybe it was the same problem as the heating not working and after a few weeks of wearing multiple layers and getting absolutely frozen I finally got it fixed. They may have been two separate issues/occasions, this was around 2003.
