Yes, fitting word, but not the best since it has a double meaning (sexual).

This is exactly the right word, unfortunately, we see it use too often in this context : “Many people are corrupted by big profits”. … and because we got habituated, it’s not striking anymore as it should.

One more of those titles where I think to myself : there must be some English grammatical pervert mechanism (which I don’t understand) that would hint some meaning to a native speaker.

A_A ,
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

What ’s are you finding confusing with it?

For me the worst part was “dognapping”. Followed by : “frantic owner clinging to car hood”. Because at this point, I am on the wrong track … since I am trying to figure out how the owner of the car was napping (like a dog ?) on his car’s hood (??) or whatever. I couldn’t make sense of that.

A_A ,
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

Ok, well, after reading the title I went on to read the “body” of the post and so I was rapidly back on track and understood that “dognapping” word … and was then able to grasp the rest…

I like this (newspaper article) title :
Foot heads arms body” meaning :
“Mr Foot is heading a group of people which is called a body that is concerned with a type of weapons which is designated by the word : arms

Sometimes it is fun to go beyond my initial confusion … but most often it is just making me lose some time … then I don’t understand and I just give up… and sometime, like today, I make some kind of a rant.

Thanks for your time, attention and your kindness 👍

Answer:

NYU’s Applied Mathematics Laboratory Ristroph et al. found that the reverse sprinkler rotates a good 50 times slower than a regular sprinkler, but it operates along similar mechanisms, which is surprising. “The regular or ‘forward’ sprinkler is similar to a rocket, since it propels itself by shooting out jets,” said Ristroph. “But the reverse sprinkler is mysterious since the water being sucked in doesn’t look at all like jets. We discovered that the secret is hidden inside the sprinkler, where there are indeed jets that explain the observed motions.”

A reverse sprinkler acts like an “inside-out rocket,” per Ristroph, and although the internal jets collide, they don’t do so head-on. “The jets aren’t directed exactly at the center because of distortion of the flow as it passes through the curved arm,” Ball wrote. “As the water flows around the bends in the arms, it is slung outward by centrifugal force, which gives rise to asymmetric flow profiles.” It’s admittedly a subtle effect, but their experimentally observed flow patterns are in excellent agreement with the group’s mathematical models.

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. The syndrome is named after cysts which form on the ovaries of some people with this condition, though this is not a universal symptom, and not the underlying cause of the disorder.

For your interest in this discussion. I cannot decide for all of you of the final conclusion … but after careful pondering here is what I say :

The strongest point would be this :
from(@PeepinGoodArgs )

(…) And when you get less that most of what you want, the population is left with even greater feelings of disappointment in their political leaders. Free speech will be used to exploit these vulnerabilities. Free speech can also alleviate the pressure of these vulnerabilities on democracy. (…)

But this would work only if debates go well enough. The following is relevant here :

from(@whenigrowup356 )

I’d argue that debates aren’t useful without a neutral, mutually trusted media source that listeners from both sides would refer to for fact-checking. The US has debates but the soundbites that partisan media air are the main way people consume them. Few people watch the whole debate, and few want to because they’re mostly just hot air. (…)

I feel this whole social process is really critical (at this point in time) so, thanks again to everyone here.

Extracting tar from these sands amounts to cleaning them. So, this is not polluting : it is cleaning !
…please change my mind because I am obviously completely wrong here 😋 ( I should also read the article )

P.S. : Article say it creates bad air pollution … honestly, I was expecting severe water contamination lasting for decades …

P.S.2 : Original paper :
in the journal Science

P.S.3 : Such a rabbit hole ! Reading the science paper what I understand is they sample air while flying a plane through the area downwind. Then, they heat this air sample to burn all those hydrocarbons and finally what they analyze is the carbon dioxide combustion product which is one PPM above the normal air concentration or 400 PPM so they measure 401 PPM and on top of this maybe they did this while in Canada there was those huge forest fire that change the air to orange smoke for many months … Well, I don’t know if this is good science or not but I have doubts.

A_A ,
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

There are stark differences in the observed concentrations when compared with that of urban areas.

Well yes, I read enough of the article to understand this is what they meant but also that there was large unexplained variations (noise) so I just gave up. I don’t have the resources, knowledge and the time to conduct a good, complete analysis.

Why shill for oil at the expense of your own health?

Now this is a multi-billion dollar question and before they shut down the tar sands, many more studies will be made. So, it’s not for me to decide and we will have the opportunity to see more in this battle.

Anyway, thanks for your interest, take care.

Hi @anarchy79,

since I forgot what I was saying here 4 months ago I read the whole thread again and basically what I said is that I agree with what you said then (4 months ago) and I added a couple of references//ideas to make this point stronger.

Also, I have no idea why you did receive this notification only today, 4 months after the discussion. I guess the Lemmy software is buggy since for my account I did not receive some notifications in a few instances where someone replied to some of my comments and I just happened to see those replies anyway since I was reading all again.

take care, 👍
