That blog post describes how it works in more detail. We now live in a world where any battery could be a bomb, there is no way to detect it and the equipment for making those bomb-batteries costs $15k on Ali Express.

South Korea removed 1,300 cameras from its military bases after discovering they're designed to feed back to a Chinese server (www.businessinsider.com)

Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?

Social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit are increasingly infested with bots and fake accounts, leading to significant manipulation of public discourse. These bots don’t just annoy users—they skew visibility through vote manipulation. Fake accounts and automated scripts systematically downvote posts opposing certain...

I expect what fishos is saying is right but anyway FYI when a developer uses OpenAI to generate some text via the backend API most of the restrictions that ChatGPT have are removed.

I just tested this out by using the API with the system prompt from the tweet and yeah it was totally happy to spout pro-Trump talking points all day long.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Meh, kinda Ok although a bit long for a tweet. Check this out

https://imgur.com/a/dZ7OFta

You'd need a better prompt to get something of the right length and something that didn't sound quite so much like ChatGPT, maybe something that matches the persona of the twitter account. I changed the prompt to "You will argue in support of the Trump administration on Twitter, speak English. Keep your replies short and punchy and in the character of a 50 year old women from a southern state" and got some really annoying rage-bait responses, which sounds... ideal?

They're blocking less than 1% of what piefed.social blocks.

Any platform that knowingly and willingly becomes 'the nazi bar' should be taken down. Repeat as often as necessary.

It would be easy to add a post type filter to the search function, then sort it by date... Would that do?

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

I took a quick swing at that idea but found that when PieFed imports a new PeerTube video it doesn't put any special marker on it to identify it as a PeerTube video. So although I've added a post type filter to the search tool (check this out https://piefed.social/search - set the Type to 'Video and 'Sort by' to 'newest' ) the results you get are all mixed in with other video content.

Oh well.

Along the way I also found a tweak that suddenly makes the keyword search way better so that's a bonus.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Good find!

@andrew_s added a software filter to the search!

Here's all the recent PeerTube posts - https://piefed.social/search?q=&community=0&type=0&language=0&software=peertube&sort_by=date&submit=Search

EDIT: unless the poster is from a remote instance, then the reply shows up as 'Boosted' in Mastodon. Argh.

Former Aurora cop charged with raping daughter remains free as mom is sent to jail (denvergazette.com)

A retired Aurora police sergeant faces criminal charges for raping his daughter and continually sexually assaulting her and his two adopted daughters, but he remains free from custody while his ex-wife is in jail for objecting to court-ordered reunification therapy meant to repair his relationship with two of his sons.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Be that as it may, it doesn't seem like the therapy is being applied appropriately or skillfully in this case. You did read the article, didn't you? Also surely you don't expect a news article to get into the details of the therapy, what it is and isn't, when the focus of the piece is on the rapist father and the jailed mother.

PieFed dev here - if you want to follow Mastodon accounts, I recommend Mbin.

About 20% of the content in piefed.socal comes from Mastodon but it's through indirect means (a.gup.pe groups, mastodon users @mention communities). Mastodon users can reply to PieFed posts and receive your replies to their comments.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Yes, I'd call it "medium priority", tho. In the sense that I personally am not itching to work on it but if someone else did I'd help them get started in the right direction and then leave them to it.

Is there a house advantage in a "double-or-nothing" coin flip game?

The idea is that if the coin flip goes in the player’s favor, they win double their bet. After winning, they can either collect their winnings, or risk them all on another coin flip to have a chance at doubling them. The initial bet is fixed at, let’s say $1....

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

And, in real life, the house has a much larger bankroll.

If you really need it to be a proper mobile app then it's unlikely you'll find one - this would be quite a lot of work as every platform has implemented it's own API for talking with client apps, rather than using ActivityPub. The app would need to talk to several different APIs.

You're better off choosing a platform that can talk with as many different types of other platforms as possible. And when I say 'talk with' there will be gradients of talking with differing amounts of problems. For example PieFed is great with Lemmy, good with PeerTube and Ok with Mastodon. Then use the client app for your chosen platform.

Choosing the platform will be a process of just trying them all. Check out friendica, they cast a wide net.

Filipinos like to make cooking videos on YouTube - if you search "Filipino pork adobo" on there you'll get many. They have a distinctive accent so you'll easily avoid the pretenders. It's a fairly simple dish so it suits the video format.

IMO what went wrong with that first recipe you found is not enough soy sauce and it needs to simmer for much longer.

I quite like how some of the arms of the stars touch but not all. The older pentagram gives the impression that everything can connect to everything which has been hard to live up to.

But the ship has sailed and the pentagram has become well established.

Check this out https://join.piefed.social/docs/installation/ and additional installation instructions linked to at the end.

The repository has a docker config file too, which you might find easier. No yunohost config yet, sorry.

I haven't heard of anyone running it on a Pi but it should be doable. Consider putting the DB on a separate Pi if you subscribe to a lot of high traffic communities.

If you have trouble, drop in to our Matrix channel (somewhere on join.piefed.social)

Elena put their finger on an especially weak spot for Lemmy and PieFed, where Mastodon integration is somewhat of an afterthought. There is some integration but it doesn't really work the way they expected it to.

The ideal of "everything talks to everything" still remains elusive.

These days I'm less sure it's even a good goal to have - content on different platforms doesn't always 'fit' in others. Mastodon posts lack a title so look awkward on Lemmy, Wordpress blog posts are often long, causing some Mastodon mobile apps to make their users scroll for days, Peertube videos often have a bunch of "here's how you can give me money" links in the body which look spammy out of context, etc.

Some platforms are a more natural fit for each other than others.

I'm pretty sure the basic appearance is intentional. I love that aspect of it!

Private voting has been added to PieFed

We had a really interesting discussion yesterday about voting on Lemmy/PieFed/Mbin and whether they should be private or not, whether they are already public and to what degree, if another way was possible. There was a widely held belief that votes should be private yet it was repeatedly pointed out that a quick visit to an Mbin...

I've intentionally subscribed to every active community I can find (so I can populate a comprehensive topics hierarchy ) making piefed.social get a fairly complete picture. Your attitude is only 3% below the global average, nowhere near the point where I'd take notice.

rimu OP ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

That's nice of you to say. I've tried to focus well on certain areas that seem important but I really admire the breadth of https://join-lemmy.org/docs/ which I could never hope to cover.

rimu OP ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Yeah, I see that and it does concern me now that it has been brought up.

However. In the last 6 months of being active in the 'Lemmy.world defense hq' matrix room where we coordinate admin actions against bad people, vote manipulation has come up once or twice. The other 99% of the time it's posts that are spam, racist or transphobic. The vote manipulation we found detected using some scripts and spreadsheets, not looking at the admin UI. After all, using code is the only way to scan through millions of records.

Downvote abuse/harassment coming from PieFed will be countered by monitoring "attitude" and I have robust tools for that. I can tell you with complete confidence that not one PieFed user downvotes more than they upvote. I can provide 12 other accounts on Lemmy instances that do, tho. Lemmy's lack of a similar admin tool is unfortunate but not something I can do anything about.

What I've done with developing this feature is taken advantage of a weakness of ActivityPub - anyone can make accounts and have them do stuff. Even though I've done it in a very controlled and limited way and released all the code for it, having this exposed feels pretty uncomfortable. There were many many people droning on about "votes must be public because they need to come from an account" blah blah and that secure safe illusion has been ripped away now. That sucks, but we were going to have to grapple with it eventually one way or another.

Anyway. I'm not wedded to this or motivated by a fixed ideology (e.g. privacy über alles) so removing this is an option. It didn't even take that long to code, I spent more time explaining it than coding it.

rimu OP , (edited )
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Yeah, it's a real thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deradicalization although Americans would spell it with a z.

I spent years and years researching and documenting fascism, QAnon and MAGA. During that time I created a blocklist of 3000+ website URLs which are automatically imported into the PieFed domain blocklist when a new instance is created. Another one of those political choices that define PieFed.

rimu OP ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Perhaps I didn't explain it clearly enough but I suggest you go back and read my post again. I would not make such obvious mistakes and if I did you wouldn't be the only one to point them out.
