US blasts ‘aggressive’ China over South China Sea collision with Philippine ship (www.cnn.com)

The United States on Monday condemned China over a collision with the Philippines in the disputed South China Sea, the latest in a series of increasingly fraught confrontations that have raised the potential of a flashpoint for global conflict in the vital waterway....

“US blasts …” we all know clickbait is the foundation of some publications but in the context of possible war, real words should be used instead of meaningless verbiage.

i agree with every main comments posted here until now which are opposed to this policy of yours, at least about this part :

(…) we do believe that when you excessively post/comment/reply negative things in News about one person (… ((you are eligible to ban)) …)

i join my voice to other users here to say this policy should focus more on frequency of posts and quality of sources. (more emphasis should be put on explaining to us what here excessively means)

There should be no restriction of stating, in comments, the fact that one candidate is, for example, a convicted felon + rapist etc … if this is established as factual.

There are many maximums in different types of potential for human beings :

  • just after birth, before 1-year-old, we are at a maximum in terms of number of neurons
  • there is another maximum in term of wisdom in the 50 to 80 years range.

This maximum you hint about would be in terms of reproductive potential and attractiveness.

Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are surging "faster than ever" to beyond anything humans ever experienced, officials say (www.cbsnews.com)

One of the major drivers of the exceptional heat building within Earth’s atmosphere has reached levels beyond anything humans have ever experienced, officials announced on Thursday. Carbon dioxide, the gas that accounts for the majority of global warming caused by human activities, is accumulating “faster than ever,”...

This one is a much better explanation and unfortunately i tend to agree with you here that humanity will not solve this in time.
… unless, maybe, we apply drastic geo - engineering methods that would solve only part of the problem.
And so, i expect a sharp decrease in humanity’s population over the next few decades.

My first guess on the title was : “this should be caused by a positive feedback with forest fires in the loop”.
…so, I went and read this Wikipedia article :
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change_feedbacks
… and it says :

(…) Carbon cycle uncertainty is driven by the large rates at which CO2 is both absorbed into plants and released when biomass burns or decays. For instance, permafrost thaw produces both CO2 and methane emissions, in ways that are difficult to model. (…)

But it also says that this one is not the most important feedback loop.

At best I would expect such agreements to slow down the genocide against Gaza for a few days. Human groups have degenerated into hatred in the worst of history … since about 10k years. A genetic reproductive advantage was gained by violent victorious warrior monsters (as an example Gensis Khan is said to have had many descendants). Eventually humanity will need some type of widespread gene therapy to get rid of our band bad tendencies … i know all that is a broad oversimplification, but still.
Edit : Ooups ! i made a typo.

You kinda have to believe in real magic to study science in-depth

I think this is the biggest problem I see in people trying to understand deeper fields of study, a concept is just too large or out of our perceived reality to even make sense without years of knowledge. The first philosophical astonishment is that anything at all exists. When I was first learning mathematics I was astonished to see that x^2^ + y^2^ = 1 was the formula to create a circle : such a simple formula to create something so fundamental was astonishing to me.
Today I would say our capacity to be astonished is probably an important mechanism to help us stop and say to ourselves : “hey ! there is something important to learn here !”

Some genes are lethal let’s call them :
“T” bad version and
“t” for the version that lets you live.

if one of those genes is on the xx // xy chromosomes then if you are XX female you will get one combination in this set of combinations : Tt, tT, TT, tt
if you get TT, you are dead.
if you get tt, you live,
if you get Tt or tT you have 3 possible outcomes :
if T is dominant you are dead,
if t is dominant you live,
if T and t are co_dominant you might be sick.

if you are XY male, you have either a “T” (dead) or a “t” (alive).

You might absolutely be right about the meaning of O.P.s’ (confused) question. But still i hope at least i answered o.k. from this part :

And does the X chromosome do anything for me, or is it turned off, and only used if I pass it on to the next generation ?

P.S. : You asked :

Not every combination is being tried in the egg during fertilization, right ?

Gene selection is made before the synthesis of the gametes : for instance a male having XY will produce sperms, each one with either an X or with a Y.

The rules and conventions to do science today are quite well known and understood by educated people (including of course Helen Mosque) … but any rules have exceptions :
Project Manhattan to produce the atomic bomb was secret science : in many countries military will have secret science development. Pharmaceutical companies will do as well.
People in those projects will not have recognition by the wider public but they will have recognition from their group.

A_A ,
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks ! … if anyone else wants to know :
SOP stands for Standard Operating Procedure. Within secret scientific research groups, SOPs are established guidelines or instructions for carrying out routine operations to ensure consistency, quality, and compliance with regulations. These SOPs help maintain integrity, confidentiality, and efficiency within the research group.

i agree because what I usually mean when i talk of science is scientific work even if this work doesn’t result in proving that an hypothesis is right so that it becomes a scientific theory.
For me the main criteria is to follow the scientific method.
