I will stop using Linux / PC for 10 months. What do you think will happen in that period?

Long story short, this year is my exam preparation year and due to my nature I will take extreme measures to prevent distraction and focus on studying. I will decommision my PC, stop browsing Linux & tech related websites and leave this beautiful place called Lemmy. To make things clear, I am not influenced by anyone for doing...

Probably. It’s just gnome with a theme and some extensions.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s just that the majority prefers a certain style. Gnome has big borders, spacy frames etc. If you hate that, you are not going to enjoy it. :)

KDE also, same modern style.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Haha why the fuck would anyone do this for some social media? :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

The majority will always just do what the site says I guess.

I’m looking at the OP getting 100 downvotes for asking a question, lol. :)

If it’s one topic you can’t say anything about here on Lemmy it’s this one, appearently.

No its sexism, look at the downvotes. They decide.

How did this take place? Her security clearance let’s her download pics from computers and mobile phones just like that?

So they are admitting there are back doors in phones and operating systems?

Doesn’t seem likely they would admit that much.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I know but I think the general public doesn’t know or understand this. It’s still not exactly admitted as a general thing how this works. Apple and other companies usually talk about how they are resisting to give out access etc.

But yeah, nsa can probably access all windows and Mac systems. I don’t think Linux though. Not counting Intel Management Engine in the cpu.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Sad part is that it could be real these days. If they just used slightly less obvious language, so people are not certain what it means exactly. Microsoft and google are working with nsa of course, and Snowden showed that any nsa employee can look at anything.

Consumer is such a bad word… Sounds like we are worms consuming corpses.

Jesus, never trust HR, ever!

I thought everyone understood this. They work for the company, not for you.

There are a lot of weird people in tech. They end up there because computers dont require social skills.

But there are also a lot of really good and nice people. I never watched Linux tech tips because unlike most, I didn’t like him at all. His vibe is shitty. It’s obvious.

My colleagues at work are great though. But they don’t use social media, which I think is part of why they are great. The constant need to be seen must be unhealthy.

I’m using Transmission, only 5 on the list. Must do better. :p

I think it’s fine but I admit I don’t think it’s very fun with one centralized Lemmy instance. Feels like reddit all over again. The idealist in me wanted a distributed network instead, with popular communities spread out across hundreds of instances run by volunteers.

But on the plus side, we can talk without corps being involved and that’s really, really nice. I don’t even use any big tech sites anymore except github.

Compare with Kagi (this is a shared search for anyone who doesn’t have an account):

It’s all big tech. I try to pick smaller companies myself.

It’s only a matter of time before cloudflare becomes arrogant enough to be user hostile also.

I don’t know but first thing I would do is to take pictures with earth in the background.

Someone always decides what’s disinformation and it’s different depending if you ask USA or China. It’s even different if you ask me or you.

That’s the problem and no ai can solve that…

There is very little information that is 100% guaranteed to be truthful. Science comes close but there is so much other information.

I only use Arch, it’s really stable and easy to fix if something goes wrong thanks to the excellent arch wiki.

But I recommend PopOS for anyone who just wants something good looking and stable and who doesn’t need the latest packages all the time.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I use Arch default. Stay away from Manjaro… If you want to try arch with a good installer, try endeavouros.com.

Its really just arch with a nice installer and a friendly community where you can ask questions. It’s specifically designed for that purpose.

Yeah this is what we need… More weapons to kill eachother.

Discord is pretty much against everything the open web is about. Closed source and proprietary protocols… Probably tons of data mining of users as well.

Coins incoming! :)

Just kidding. So much drama, needs some comic relief and this is all I had.

This was the first thing I’ve noticed on day one. The way it “speaks” is designed to sound like a polite authority in the field.

Nice work!

Unfortunately it seems a lot of users need apps like this now, since the Lemmy network is heavily fragmented already.

That’s both a plus and a minus of the technology.

Would be nice with some visual map that shows which instance talks to which other instance, blocked communities, and so on.

For example, beehaw doesn’t federate with Lemmy.world. How will the users know this if they are new?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it’s a big project for sure.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s fine. I’ve been using it for all sorts of languages. Some issues with rust though, but that’s because I’m a newbie and I can’t fix the errors chatgpt is producing.

Python, go, terraform… All great.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don’t get it… You can start 100 pirate instances if you want. Just not federate with Lemmy.world.

1984 , (edited )
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

So join one of the instances that got defederated.

All these problems comes from centralization.
