Bit of a misleading title, I’ve not watched the video but based on the video description and article they cite (also written by them, I think?) it should read “95% of Deaths from Extremism [in the past decade] in the U.S. are [Committed by] Far-Right”. The title as it is now suggests 95% of people killed were far-right, not that 95% of people killed were killed by far right.
Personally I’d swap “are” for “were” too. Present tense is a bit of an odd choice since it’s data from the past, for obvious reasons.
QL was our first game and although it was a big milestone for us, it was created at a time before we understood version control software. We do not have access to the source code anymore and cannot make any fixes or changes to the game. Because of this, we have decided to disable the ability for anyone to buy copies of the game....
I think the larger issue here is that you can’t compare music or TV shows to games, at least not in how people interact with them.
TV has always been a subscription model, the only difference with streaming is getting to choose when and what you watch. Games have always ether been pay per play or pay for a copy, with the notable exception of free to play or MMOs that require a subscription. Music is an odd case because it’s split between two models historically, radio and records/CDs.
I generally watch a show or movie once, maybe I’ll rewatch it if I really like it, similar for music. If i loose acces to it because a streaming service drops it, shame, but no big deal. But I’ll often go back and play a game for hundreds of hours, loosing acess to a game is a much bigger deal. People generally put a lot more time and effort in when they play a game, owning it makes more sense in that context. Personally, I don’t buy that many games over all, having access to thousands of titles doesn’t mean much if I’ll only ever play a handful. Something like Game pass is more expensive than the rate i buy new games at and loosing access to a game that i routinely play is a legitimate concern with a streaming model, ether because i stop paying the subscription or they decide to take a title off the service.
Still, according to electionbettingodds.com, which averages online betting sites, Kelly has a 34.9 percent chance of being the presumptive nominee’s vice-presidential pick.
Also according to that site, Kamala Harris has 0.8% odds to be Kamala Harris’s VP, slightly edging out Gavin Newsome.
The Harris campaign is still vetting candidates and has not made its pick yet. Still, according to electionbettingodds.com, which averages online betting sites, Kelly has a 34.9 percent chance of being the presumptive nominee’s vice-presidential pick.
Jfc. Taking the odds from an aggregate of betting websites and using that as a verified source seems crazy to me.
It’s not. People aren’t just coming into the bet as neutral computational machines trying to maximize odds. They’re betting on people they like. Some are spending money to intentionally warp the odds. The only population control is people with money willing to risk it in a process with <1.0 expected return. That’s a subpopulation already known for making bad choices.
Of course, but I don’t think that him as the VP candidate changes the odds of that much relative to the other contenders who don’t come with that risk.
VP candidates don’t usually matter much in an election unless they’re freaks with a couch fetish or something weird like that.
People that don’t make decisions on ill informed beliefs don’t bet at all as it’s just a money waste. People that make bad decisions tend to bet more and go into debt because of it.
Betting odds are not a prediction by any means. The betting houses don’t even try to predict anything because they know it is a fools game. Instead its just a sentiment tracker of very small subset of the population.
For example if tomorrow I would bet 100 Billion for Harris to win the election she would suddenly show up as the heavy favorite when nothing about her campaign has changed. Instead the bets for that particular site would be heavily skewed and they would increase odds for other options to reduce risk, while at the same time basically bullying any further bets on Harris.
Yes, and ETFs have the best odds with pretty low, but relatively stable, returns. It's fairly low-risk because that's how index funds work. Retail investing is not really for me, so low-risk is the most I am comfortable with.
In this scenario, I only need to keep the money in stocks for 1 month. It's not like investing in crypto, I'd lose barely any of it in that time.
I’d say toy guns are different. There’s active intent and imaginative play.
A fidget toy is supposed to be something that we use unconsciously to help us focus on other stuff.
It’s odd, to me, that one can squeeze a trigger as a fidget.
I’m someone who needs fidgets so I imagine the action and feedback is satisfying. But I’m uncomfortable with the idea of unconsciously squeezing a trigger.
I also live in a country where guns are not common which probably influences my perspective.
Really interesting chat with a clinician about ADHD and his philosophies regarding it and medication just now:
He didn’t think it’s a disorder unless we say it is, I.e. it’s causing us problems and we haven’t got a way around it.
Does think adult ADHD is different to child ADHD, and likes to say ADH (without the D for disorder) is part of who we are, naturally. He doesn’t work with children / assess them, though, so a caveat there.
Does believe in working with our nature, and also using medication as and when needed: when it feels like a disorder or stopping us from doing what we genuinely want to do. But shouldn’t be used as a productivity tool.
He suggested ADHD medications could help us to “understand what you’re working towards”. Like a journey of understanding. Remove / reduce the distractions and we find out what we’re left with when those obstacles are no longer taking up all that time and energy, and we find out if what we are left doing with our time and energy is what we want after all.
He was very strong about saying it is not about us “not being capable”. Medication is a way to support a journey of finding out what we want to be doing.
Most interesting viewpoint was the idea that ADHD is a coping mechanism for strong emotions, I.e. after some kind of traumas it became a way of coping with strong emotions, then became something like a habit of the subconscious kind (not literally the same as a habit). Said it’s not about dopamine lack, but challenges in its ‘availability’ at the right time because dopamine is often accessible with distractions / night before deadlines etc. We learned to distract ourselves from things that cause negative emotional consequence - and as adults that includes things that we think MIGHT cause negative emotional consequences. The latter means it can look like self-sabotage (my words). He said that for this reason (predicting potential negative consequences), distractions tended to be more likely when we are doing things we care a lot about. I.e. there’s more to lose if it goes wrong, so we distract ourselves to cope with the fear of failure (my interpretation). We/others might assume we don’t care about something enough if we’re too distracted when actually the opposite is likely true.
When he shared this last part I asked if he thought people could potentially cure themselves of ADHD if they addressed the emotional parts, address trauma, found better coping mechanisms - a tricky and loaded question, I know, but I felt he was almost ‘going there’ anyway…
He didn’t answer directly. I believe that was on purpose. He instead kept talking about ‘ADH’ being who we are now as adults, or not being a disorder by default, or bad. That it can be and is good. Was talking about working with our nature, not against it and definitely not trying to hide who we are for other people.
Interesting! Lots to ponder. He had a fantastic way with words.
I’m curious about other ADHD-ers thoughts on this.
I haven’t read or heard similar ideas but I’d love to know if books or blogs exist that talk about theories and philosophies like this.
For one: I know that the exact genetic component is not well established at the moment, but it seems odd to me to consider ADHD a "coping mechanism" when whole generations of families seem to have it (me and most—possibly all—of my siblings, several of my siblings' kids, my dad and some of his siblings, and likely at least some of his dad and siblings).
This is already noticeable between Finland and England. According to the stats I’ve seen, the averages between the two are two inches apart. So, I’m average or just a tad shorter than the average man in the UK. In Finland I’m 5cm shorter than the average, and I kinda feel oddly tall every time I walk around in London because of that.

She claims that “she’s not at a protest so it can’t be an illegal one”, meanwhile, back at the taz, she says it was a protest (“Kundgebung”). It might be an odd interaction but then you can also try and politicise the hell out of a cop tangling you up in a discussion and asking your for ID – which btw they can do without any reason at all. The whole thing was over in 30 minutes, no arrest (in the legal sense). Berlin police at that time was very much on edge as in previous years they had to deal with massive violence during the Nakhba protests. There were permitted demonstrations, she could’ve gone to those. You can then also say “but she’s a Jew who’s holding that sign getting tangled up in a discussion with a cop, this is triply outrageous!” – why should there be different laws for Jews and Muslims? It’s all applied equally. That not being the case would be triply outrageous.
I assume the rest of your wall of text is in just as good faith so I won’t bother.
The anecdotal odds are that you are living in a simulation though. I mean the simple math says that your odds are 1 over one whole value in infinity that you’re not. It’s just likely that whole value = 1.
people would probably eat less meat sure just because of the logistics of it, but did u forget that history is a thing? 150 odd years ago most people regularly slaughtered their own animals a few hundred years further back and basically everyone did, and at the same time almost everyone with very very few exceptions ate meat.
England and all its former colonies (except the American ones) agree on the language, and the only odd one out - the United States feels it is unique among former colonies and its parent nation as the sole owner of the most correct version of English.
