RCS is all about controlling the messaging market — just like every other messaging network out there. Every implementation is proprietary and locked behind the implementer’s servers.
If you want something open source you want Signal. There are also other messaging solutions that you can self-host.
Big tech will never give you open access to their networks because that’s against the whole point.
SMS is the odd one out because it doesn’t require servers, and the reason it’s so open and universally supported is because back in the day the governments of France and Germany forced carriers to do it that way, and once it got popular it spread.
Inclusion. Hasn’t worked in UK schools. It was suggested that “every child has the right to a mainstream education”, but this was the ‘spin’ the government were looking for on the back of the Warnock report (I think). 1978… yes it was a Tory government.
TL;DR Many UK educational units that were set up for pupils with ‘high support needs’ (the expensive stuff) were closed down, because cost cutting! All those pupils were shovelled into ‘mainstream’ which was already under-funded and badly provided for. This meant THEY were not funded and badly provided for, just like everyone else! Currently, 40 odd years later it’s a mess. Many schools are not geared up to manage a diverse range of learners, even 4 decades down the road. There are educational environments that specifically cater to a range of differing needs so that everyone can access learning suitable to their wants, needs, level and all that. But they are few and far between.
Education needs more money, more respect, everything. Not fashionable and doesn’t win votes though.
What are the odds that muons are more sensitive to neutrino interaction and this is what the scientists are seeing? Muons are pretty massive, after all, and neutrinos are literally everywhere. Obligatory: "billions of neutrinos pass through you every second".
Muons are leptons like neutrinos and their electron cousins, and we already know that electrons can be boosted by the occasional neutrino interaction. A free muon in a magnetic field has nowhere to be boosted to, so, coupled with a hypothetically higher chance of interacting with a neutrino, I'd expect something to happen when it does, though not exactly what.
I figure we don't already use muons in neutrino detectors because they don't last very long (about a second) before decaying, and the only way to get them to last longer is to accelerate them to a decent fraction of the speed of light. That way, from our reference frame they can last minutes or more. That's going to be energy-hungry compared to the passive detectors we have.
i.e. the passive detectors which take advantage of the aforementioned electron / atom interaction.

Depression, Anxiety Don't Raise Risk of Cancer, Study Suggests
DESCRIPTION
Source: United Press International - Health News
A large new study challenges the long-held idea that depression makes people more vulnerable to cancer, finding no association between the mental health condition and most types of cancer. The study, of more than 300,000 adults, found that neither depression nor chronic anxiety were linked to increased odds of developing cancer in the coming years. And when researchers looked at specific types of cancer, the findings were largely the same.
And then there's religion... it always seemed similarly odd to me that otherwise rational people can believe in the adult version of Santa. These are often the same people.
The disapproval of Elon Musk is the top reason Tesla Model 3 owners are selling their electric vehicles and going for another brand, according to a new survey of 5,000 Model 3 owners.
You know, I'm going to say it and maybe no one likes it, but. Just the feel I get is that we're so hopeless in having our politicians actually do shit. Like, we realize, they're not going to do a damn thing to address jack shit. And the world has been turned so rampant consumerism, that the only way it feels like we have left is to do this non-sense of burning sneakers, shooting beer, and selling cars.
Like we're so past the point that actual advocacy is so ineffective and politicians are so past the point of actually serving the public, it's either we rampant play the game they've set before us with mucho-consumerism or we do the teetotal opposite of "we're killing the Applebees" anti-consumerism.
Now there's tons of in the middle, but say there's some perceived social ill, well to solve it you cannot just send a letter to your Congressional Representative or Senator. That's just going straight to the recycle bin. And you cannot just march on whatever to try and make a point, news cycle isn't going to focus on it unless it drives traffic to their site to sell ads. So how does one solve this "ill", fuck it, let's go consumerism in one or the other direction TO THE EXTREME!! Because, that money, that's what they're listening to. So you and your groupies fucking with it or amping its sales through the roof, oh well that they will listen to suddenly. We've got this notion that the things we own OR don't own define our position of morals and ethics. It's kinda fucked up when you think about it, it's like 11:00am here and while typing this I'm starting to reach for my whiskey flask.
I feel like this is how the Boston Tea party got started. The British wouldn't listen to shit, so fuck it, let's go fuck their tea up! You know, I don't know, all of this is just a feeling. But it feels like people we voted in to listen to us won't listen to us and thus we've got to go fuck with people's wallets so that they will listen to us. Do I think it's a good idea? Nah, this is silly shit. We should be able to address social woes in better terms. But that said, it doesn't feel like we've got a lot of tools to actually address shit. Everyone (that's hyperbole, I just mean to say a good amount of folks) has gone greedy as shit. There is fewer and fewer folks who are looking at "what will this do to the future" and just getting into that "dog eat dog" mentality.
Trying to keep from going off in a long crazy ass tangent, long story short, I think the 1% have amassed so much fucking everything and the rest of us are fighting so hard for table scraps, it's difficult to not be slashing at people's throats. Because if you ain't taking from your brother or your sister, you've got rich fuckers taking from you both. Like I said, it's just feels, but damn it feels like when it comes to solving some sort of problem in society we're a small hungry rodent being backed into a corner by some fifty foot cat. We're at a breaking point, we're either going to do something crazy or be a feline's lunch. Is that the proper way to solve anything, odds are likely "no", but damn I can't blame a person for being crazy. We're in some crazy ass times.
So yeah, I agree with you, but I mean I can't really look around this place and blame a person for being batshit crazy. It's kinda the environment that's promoted now a days. Now me and my whiskey flask are going to go have a heart to heart. Shit.
I work in the insurance industry and I 100% agree with this.
The only time it’s wise to take out an insurance policy is when
A) It’s legally required (though this is sometimes due to lobbying by the insurance companies themselves)
B) When you absolutely will not be able to actually pay for a potential, but necessary expense by yourself (cancer treatments and stuff like that)
So Health Insurance, Auto Insurance (even if your car is cheap and self-insurable, the car you hit may not be), Home-owners insurance and stuff like that are necessary and generally a good financial bet, even if they are crooked af.
Any “micro-insurances” though? All total scams. Travel insurance, phone insurance (or “Extended Warranties”), Apple Care, all that kind of shit is 100% going to cost you more money to have than it’ll save you - unless you get really really lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it). You’d be better off spending what you’d pay on those insurance premiums on a hand of blackjack, I’ll bet the odds would be slightly more in your favor that way
The 1040EZs were a since when I was in high school but still odd of they check anyway why do I still have to do it?
In the past few years we had some more deductions and I had to Google which numbers, forms, or lines I had to put stuff on it felt so damn intuitive to a point I started designing forms to be easier for people, gave up and just let my tax guy do it all from now on.
Investor confidence in China’s troubled property sector has been rocked again this week by reports that one of the country’s largest private building conglomerates missed interest payments on two bonds.
I have to say that of all things in China for Marxist-Lenninists to be defending, the Chinese urban real estate sector of 2023 seems like a pretty odd choice.
Why don’t you just share with the class exactly what you think you should be allowed to say instead of being so oddly cryptic.
I mean, my instance has rules and I enforce them. Should I not be permitted to do that?
All I hear from this is a snowflake upset about the fact that they can’t use “basic slurs” (whatever the hell that means) without facing repercussions. Imagine that. People disliking the use of offensive words towards the underprivileged. The audacity.
So, that's definitely better than nothing, but your browser isn't the only thing -- though these days, it is a very important thing -- that talks to the Internet. If, for example, you're using a lemmy client to read this, I'd bet that it's good odds that it doesn't have SOCKS support.
Though I wouldn't be surprised if someone has made VPN software that intercepts connections and acts as a proxy SOCKS client, which would make it work more like a traditional VPN if you can reach a remote SOCKS server, though maybe with a performance hit.

Yeah, okay, looks like stunnel can do this on Linux. So it's a thing.

Yea, it’s an archetype, but it’s funny how some predictions are oddly specific for such a broad recurrent archetype:
“… a despicable person will arise… a man of contempt… to whom the royal honor has not been rightfully conferred. He will slip in when least expected and will seize the kingdom through flattery and intrigue.” Daniel 11:21
“He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior… He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.” Daniel 8:25, 2 Thess 2:10
“But then the court will convene, and all his power will be taken away.” Daniel 7:26
From these, the Antichrist’s description is starting to sound like Hannah Arendt’s banality of evil and how that is scarier than fictional supernatural evil with horns and pitchforks.
Thank god not everyone does this or you’d see millions of them everywhere. There’s definitely the odd deranged dog owner who thinks it a good idea to – instead of cleaning up the dog shit – package it such that it does not ever decay.
I’ve got a tendency to pick these up and throw them out because otherwise I’ll be looking at them for months.
I was dealing with some pretty intense nihilism after my beloved dog passed away. I had thoughts like “Why put effort into anything when in 100/1000/10000 years everything I love and care about will be dead, gone, and forgotten?” It’s a terrible philosophy to have and live with, incredibly depressing. I was able to escape mine through meditation with some chemical assistance. Realized that just because things don’t last forever doesn’t mean they don’t have meaning. The fact that we’re alive and conscious, experiencing things everyday, means our lives have value. The cosmic odds of us existing here and now are staggering, we’re so lucky to be alive! So, to me the value is in the experiences, in the day to day.
I have a vague idea to create a wiki for politics-related data. Basically, I’m annoyed with how low-effort, entirely un-researched content dominates modern politics. I think a big part of the problem is that modern political figures use social media platforms that are hostile to context and citing sources....
Oh, well I guess that’s true, but I find it hard to fathom that OP was going to do their own research (in the sense you described) on something like transportation infrastructure costs. Unless OP runs their own infrastructure network where they can pull real cost and usage data, I assumed the research they were referring to was more in the realm of a lit review.
Unless OP is a secret billionaire, odds are this rule will not impact their efforts.
The six-year-old student who shot his teacher in the US earlier this year, boasted about the incident saying “I shot [her] dead”, unsealed court documents show....
This is somewhat true. I’m fairly knowledgeable about this topic (US) im pretty sure Children still cannot be officially diagnosed with a severe personality disorder until usually 14-18 depending on the state and the personality disorder. Usually it’s higher age brackets for more “severe” disorders like aspd. Yet weirdly low for add, adhd and odd. Depends mainly on state.
Many problematic children will be diagnosed with both odd and adhd /add at a young age and the moment they “age out” of youth services they’ll be immediately diagnosed with aspd or a whole bouquet of other DSM’s. This is one of my bigger pet peeves as parents are often left out of the loop pourpousefully simply as there is no “solution” to a child with such issues other than buttloads of money and time.
To add, as someone who has worked with children and children with behavioral issues. In multiple countries and cultures:
We usually know with like 80% certainty by the time the child is I’d say six or seven, roughly what is wrong with any given child, and can give pretty spot on diagnosis between ourselves. We are ofc not allowed to speak with parents regarding most of these issues, that’s a 5 minute talk between a child’s psychologist and its parents every six months. And Timmy just can’t sitt still for more than 20 minutes! It’s a disaster! But other than thst he’s a little angel!
Also, imagine telling a Karen her precious angel tried stabbed another kid with scissors?
Yeah I fucking stabbed her, I fucking stabbed the lil bitch in the face cause I fucking hate her fucking bitch"
And then two weeks later you almost loose your job, cause surprise. Timmy just stabbed the lil bitch in the FACE with Scissors. I know from the grapevine Timmy is now in a locked mental health juvie. Like. How do I explain. We all knew? All of us who ever worked with him told each other he was going to spend the rest of his life getting bailed out of jail by mommy and daddy, or dead, or 15-life. We knew he was dangerous. Deranged even. Why dosent anyone listen? Parents didn’t care, administration didn’t care. Hell the only people who seemed to actually care were us and the girls parents. (big and biggest Bitch)
It’s this shit + the metal detectors (+admin) that makes people like me charge 100$/h tutoring autistic kids now instead of working 50% and volunteering 50% at local school districts.
I am not a teacher. Just a giant guy who has always been good with kids. (I never stopped being one)
I dont think im intelligent enough to get into the nature vs nurture argument. It’s a doozy. My opinion is “why not both” I’ve seen both sides proven imo, a good nurture just gives you alot more tools to use.
Actual leftists who don’t mind government control of information
Yes, actual leftists. I’m going to quote to you some Marx. This is from Chapter 2 of the Communist Manifesto which is basically a 30 page pamphlet, I suggest you read it. I want you to pay particular attention to number 6.
The proletariat will use its political supremacy to wrest, by degree, all capital from the bourgeoisie, to centralise all instruments of production in the hands of the State, i.e., of the proletariat organised as the ruling class; and to increase the total productive forces as rapidly as possible.
Of course, in the beginning, this cannot be effected except by means of despotic inroads on the rights of property, and on the conditions of bourgeois production; by means of measures, therefore, which appear economically insufficient and untenable, but which, in the course of the movement, outstrip themselves, necessitate further inroads upon the old social order, and are unavoidable as a means of entirely revolutionising the mode of production.
These measures will, of course, be different in different countries.
Nevertheless, in most advanced countries, the following will be pretty generally applicable.
Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
Centralisation of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
Equal liability of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country.
Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, &c, &c.
As you can see, nothing here is at odds with that.
Actual leftists that are ok with some people being removed from society because of the groups they belong to.
What groups? If you’re about to use Adrian Zenz as a source you are a joke. If you’re instead claiming that working to abolish the existence of the bourgeoisie is a bad thing you are a clown.
No, he’s right. “For any odd prime” is a not-unheard-of expression. It is usually to rule out 2 as a trivial case which may need to be handled separately.
Of couse all the others are odd because otherwise they wouldn’t be prime. All primes after three are also not divisible by three… “magic”. The only difference is that there are is no word like “even” or “odd” for “divisible by three” or “not divisible by three”.
Okay? Like I said, it’s usually to rule out cases where 2 is a trivial edge case. It’s common enough that “for any odd prime / let p be an odd prime” is a normal expression. That’s all.
I'm 64. When I was young there wasn't any diagnosis. I didn't figure things out until I was 63.
My big advantage was having parents who I now see as being autistic. I think they innately knew how to help me. I never viewed any of my traits as odd or unusual. I've been pretty successful at adapting in a positive way. There is definitely more masking, but on the line between being myself and masking I think I'm in a good place.
