I saw a quote, as I do every year, from @neilhimself and then remembered he had expanded on it. These are good thoughts in hard times to take forward into the new year.

Saturday, December 31, 2011 My New Year Wish Posted by Neil Gaiman at 8:58 AM A decade ago, I wrote: [Edit for character count see first quote] And almost half a decade ago I said, ...l hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind. And for this year, my wish for each of us is small and very simple. And it's this. I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, Living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something. So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.

Growing up in the area, there were years where we'd bring our whole family up to the curbside of the and camp out for a day or two ahead of time. Just floats, bands, equestrians.

It's a little weird to see them going for the Super Bowl type-spectacle now. I'm both impressed & disgusted.

Esp with Honda as a sponsor, we get really auto-oriented BS in the beginning.

The Rose Parade does choose some good marching bands from all over the world. You can see them in the link above, but with commentary and cutaways.

This KTLA BandCam claims to focus on the bands: https://ktla.com/news/rose-parade/watch-the-2024-ktla-rose-parade-band-cam/

The Green Band from Japan is one of the first and they have a great marching routine, plus take on the challenging "Cumbanchero".

Anyone who knows me knows that I've been using next cloud forever, and I fully endorse anyone doing any level of self hosting should have their own. It's just a self-hosted Swiss army knife, and I personally find it even easier to use than something like SharePoint.

I had a recurring issue where my logs would show "MYSQL server has gone away". It generally wasn't doing anything, but occasionally would cause large large file uploads to fail or other random failures that would stop quickly after.

The only thing I did is I went in and doubled wait_timeout in my /etc/mysql/mariadb.conf.d/50-server.cnf

After that, my larger file uploads went through properly.

It might not be the best solution but it did work so I figured I'd share.

Here’s a cool article I found on Nextcloud performance improvements, and connecting Redis over Unix sockets gave me a more substantial performance improvement than migrating to Postgres. Very happy I fell down this rabbit hole today.

To note if you’re following the tutorial in the link above, and for people using the nextcloud:stable container together with the recommended cron container:

  • the redis configuration (host, port, password, …) need to be set in config/config.php, as well as config/redis.config.php
  • the cron container needs to receive the same /etc/localtime and /etc/timezone volumes the app container did, as well as the volumes_from: tmp

Thank you for the link and the Redis pointers. I should double check that my Nextcloud setup is using Redis, it might well be misconfigured.

I'm not one for resolutions per se, but rather prefer to set myself achievable goals for the coming year.

Thread below:

My first lot are running based.

Last year was difficult, but feel as though I'm back enjoying it again.

Main goal - Complete the London Marathon. Bonus if I'm sub 5 hours.

Target distance run - 1000kms, at a push 1000 miles.

A sub 2 hour half marathon.

LincolnRamirez OP ,
@LincolnRamirez@mstdn.social avatar

Second lot - reading goals.

Last year was a great reading year, with 35 books completed, though a number of these were sub 200 pages.

Aim is 27, I want to read War and Peace, which I know will take time.

I want to read more stories from around the world as well.

One of two possibilities. Either I have a cold, which coincidentally began about 12 hours after the RSV vaccine, or I am having side effects from said vaccine.

Honestly, even if it is from the vaccine, I'm still glad I got it. Vaccines are important, especially at my age. And, no, they don't cause .

Colonial Convergence

Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi, who teaches at the University of , , explained the paradox: “One can detest Jews and love Israelis, because Israelis somehow are not Jews. Israelis are colonial fighters and settlers, just like Afrikaners. They are tough and resilient. They know how to dominate. Jews are different. They are, among other qualities, gentle, non-physical, often passive, intellectual. So one can go on disliking Jews while admiring the Israelis.”

Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi, "The Israeli Connection. Who Israel Arms and Why", Pantheon Books, New York, 1987; cited by Alain Gresh: https://africasacountry.com/2009/08/south-africa-and-israel/ @israel

"The Campaign Against Antisemitism was formed in 2014, after a previous Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Its explicit founding purpose was to counter the antisemitism that arises in Britain when Israel pummels Palestinians and, implicitly, to defend Israel’s right to pummel. Chief executive Gideon Falter is also vice chairman of the Jewish National Fund UK, which is reported to have provided funding to the CAA in the past. The JNF enjoys charitable status and its existence predates the Balfour Declaration. For over a century, it has bought up land in historic Palestine, helped plan the Nakba, furthered exclusive Jewish settlement and transformed colonised land into parks and forests to erase what had been before."
