mortalic , in What are some old or new Steam alternatives to StarCraft 1 & 2?

I know you requested steam, but beyond all reason is legitimately good and free. Runs on all major OS’s, has a good user base and excellent development.

Beyondallreason.info I think

Wow, how did I not know about this?

It’s also good to mention that it’s an open source game and they do indeed plan to release it on Steam later.

mortalic ,

Tbf, I didn’t know about the steam release. But yeah it’s also open source.

Banthex ,

Wow Thanks! They also have a appimage for my fedora bazzite <3

mortalic ,

Yup, that’s awesome. The first time I played it, I was using a steam deck as a daily driver while waiting for a new laptop to ship. Grabbed the app image and it just worked!

EnderofGames ,

If you wanted an open-source streaming-economy RTS, I’d very quickly recommend Zero-K.

I hadn’t even heard of BAR before, so I got something to try in the next few days.

ssm , (edited ) in Until Dawn will also require a PSN Account to play on Steam. I think we already got the message, every playstation game will now require a PSN account
@ssm@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Part of me wishes that Valve would simply tell these publishers that require 3rd party launchers and accounts to run their games to fuck off their platform; at the very least they warn about it on the store page I suppose. It’s not like Steam is any less of a DRM platform after all (though you can access the API to download games on unsupported platforms like OpenBSD).

undeffeined ,

To my knowledge steam shows the info on the store page when a third party account is required

bdonvr , in List of countries that cannot make a PSN account, following the Helldivers 2 controversy.

I know Sony is a Japanese company but Iran and Cuba not being on there seems odd too.

LoamImprovement , in Helldivers 2 went from one of the most beloved Steam games to one of the most hated pretty quickly

Imagine having a golden goose and wanting to make pâté out of it. Sure does make me want to buy Ghost of Tsushima when it comes out, totally.

some_guy , in Apple seeks Steam developer's documents to fight consumer lawsuit

That’s bullshit. The App Store created a race to the bottom and stifled new software by obliterating the market for good paid apps.

null , in I'm mildly proud of how I categorise my games on Steam and interested to see others' methods

I just have “Craig” and “Not Craig”.

keefshape , (edited ) in Steam will no longer pop up at every startup if you use the latest beta

Jfc. Thank you Valve!!! I have long since lost track of how many times I have sworn at Steam stealing focus on startup, usually when I am entering a keyring password or something.

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

i usually just disable autostsrtup for basically everything that doesn’t need to be running for my system to work or productivity tools (like sharex and powertoys)

keefshape ,

I am coming at things from a different angle. Both being on linux, and having purposely added steam to start automatically.

Productivity for me, is having my workspace in the same state I left it – so I can pick up where I left off. That said, I also work in IT and put system and software updates at an equally high priority.

Having browser, terminal, steam (so it can be running shader cache or updates, if nothing else) are all restored to prior state then allows me to enable various unattended upgrades and even restarts during off hours.

brb ,

Jersey Fried Chicken?

muhyb , in Steam updates its policy to allow games with AI content under some conditions.

AI is okay to use if you make it do the chores, not in creative part. Otherwise it would be an insult to people who create original content.

taladar ,

As if anyone trying to make a quick buck cares if they are insulting anyone?

muhyb ,

I meant Valve for allowing AI. Hope they can make it right. It’s a gray area in my opinion.

Not lazy, greedy. The epic exclusivity just expired.

RickyRigatoni ,
@RickyRigatoni@lemmy.ml avatar

Since when is the exclusivity 3 years???

loutr ,
@loutr@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think it depends on the game/publisher/contract/… ? Eurogamer says:

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 coming to Steam after three years Epic exclusivity

But maybe it was a de facto exclusivity and not a contractually-enforced one?

RickyRigatoni ,
@RickyRigatoni@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, exclusivity in this context could mean either. Why must some languages be so fuzzy.

DreamySweet , in Seems like a good promotion!

The reason it’s showing a price above 0 is because you can buy it as a gift for someone else.

One of the devs had his steam name set to “Abschieben schafft Wohnraum” which translates to “Deportation creates living space”. He has now hidden previous names and claimed that this was to troll, but he still has Trump and Putin as his background so I don’t think that I am going to believe that.

@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Wow. This dev has issues. Anyway, thanks for the info!

Sir_Kevin , in Until Dawn will also require a PSN Account to play on Steam. I think we already got the message, every playstation game will now require a PSN account
@Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m not necessarily opposed to needing a third party account for a game. VRChat for instance requires it but that makes it easy to use your same account on many different devices/platforms.

That said, Sony has a long track record of leaks, hacks, terrible and outright illegal practices and is generally shitty to their customers. So no, hell no, I will not sign up with them for anything.
