I had two rare but not valuable cars, my first car was a 1974 Mazda rx2 sedan. Bright orange with a white interior.

The second I restored a 1956 Dodge Truck which had a 270 V8. This combo wasn’t common.

mortalic ,

Rotary, 12A if my memory is correct. Mine had an automatic (it was my grandmother’s car before mine)

Here are the steps to dual boot Fedora Kinoite and Windows 11: Preparation

<span style="color:#323232;">Backup Data: Ensure you have backups of all important data from your Windows system.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Create Live USBs: Create a bootable USB drive for both Windows 11 and Fedora Kinoite using tools like Rufus or Etcher.
</span>

Install Windows 11

<span style="color:#323232;">Boot from Windows USB: Insert the Windows 11 USB drive and boot from it.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Install Windows 11: Follow the installation prompts. When prompted, create a partition for Windows, leaving some unallocated space for Fedora Kinoite.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Complete Installation: Finish the installation and set up Windows 11.
</span>

Install Fedora Kinoite

<span style="color:#323232;">Boot from Fedora USB: Insert the Fedora Kinoite USB drive and boot from it.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Start Installation: Begin the installation process and choose the option to install alongside Windows.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Partitioning:
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> Select the unallocated space created earlier.
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> Create the necessary partitions for Fedora (usually root / and swap).
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Install Fedora: Complete the installation process.
</span>

Configure Boot Loader

<span style="color:#323232;">Set Default Bootloader: Fedora will install GRUB as the bootloader. It should automatically detect Windows 11 and add it to the boot menu.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Verify Entries: After installation, reboot the system. You should see the GRUB menu with options to boot into Fedora or Windows.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Set Default Boot Option (Optional): If you want to change the default boot option, edit the GRUB configuration.
</span>

Post-Installation

<span style="color:#323232;">Update Systems: Boot into both operating systems and ensure they are fully updated.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Install Drivers: Make sure all necessary drivers are installed for both Windows and Fedora.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Test Dual Boot: Reboot several times and test both operating systems to ensure the dual-boot setup works seamlessly.
</span>

Troubleshooting

<span style="color:#323232;">Missing GRUB Menu: If the GRUB menu doesn’t appear, you might need to repair the bootloader using a Fedora live USB.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Windows Boot Issues: If Windows doesn’t boot, you may need to use the Windows recovery options to repair the Windows bootloader and then reinstall GRUB.
</span>

Following these steps will help you set up a dual-boot system with Fedora Kinoite and Windows 11.

Regular plan, one of the og unlimited data plans. One plus 9t.

mortalic OP ,

Thank you for this info, I’ll look into it. I was messing around with a wifi direct solution earlier but didn’t get it to work.

These seems like a lot of work so I can use my steam deck online in the car.

mortalic OP ,

Thank you

mortalic OP ,

No idea, it’s nearly impossible to read what it does and doesn’t do. Plus, like another commenter said they can change it. It’s also become increasingly expensive…

mortalic ,

I second KDE connect. It’s awesome. Don’t listen to the haters.

mortalic ,

There is an fdroid version named syncthing fork. Give that a go.

mortalic ,

While most of the points are covered here, and it’s likely true that the cost to add the panel and micro inverters is high, (I built a small two panel one battery off-grid system for about $4000 to power a chest freezer)… I have a counter point that I feel should be considered.

While it’s true that it isn’t going to extend driving range by much, my thought is that it is still worth it. Take these examples:

Drove to great wolf lodge in the summer, left car in parking lot for 3 days without charge. It lost several %.

Left car in an airport lot for a week lost even more power.

Drove to NorCal, left car at Airbnb driveway, had to find charging despite the car sitting in very bright sunshine for 4 days.

Car camping

Apartment complex parking (literally one of the main negatives about EVs)

All of these would benefit from trickle charging, even if it was just to prevent the drain of sitting.

mortalic ,

Replying to my own comment because I just stumbled upon uncle Rich doing exactly this on a cheap chinese EV truck.

It’s kind of a fun take on the crappy truck too. youtube link

mortalic ,

Same

mortalic ,

I mean, the Kia EV9 seems pretty big. But I think you mean Ford Excursion big… and man… GM has a hummer of a truck for you. Also, no one is buying it.

mortalic ,

Seriously, I just want an EV Sportscar. Give me something Z car sized, RWD and no extras.

mortalic ,

Stuff like this is starting to make its way into automotive youtubers feeds now. I just saw one where he picked up a Model S P85D for like $10k or something crazy because it was “insurance totaled”. The issue was they’d let the battery die in the lot and some idiots didn’t think to charge it.

mortalic ,

Sports cars are silly. I know what I want. And it’s a overpowered RWD sports car.

EDIT to add stuff… I already have an AWD ev, and a FWD EV. The FWD is terrible, not only does the high torque overpower the low rolling resistance tires, but… just like an F1 car is crazy over powered, I want appropriate digital nannies, fat tires and all the stuff I had with my previous sports cars and motorcycles.

mortalic ,

Sure… great… I’m in the states though, so… 🤷

mortalic ,

I would love this so much… with the RF body cuz I think it looks sexier. Too bad Mazda is basically just anti-ev or rebadging other people’s hybrid platforms.

mortalic ,

I have, and the Ioniq 5 N… they are great… I’m glad they exist, but not what I want.

EDIT: My friend has a bright red Model S plaid, and it was one of the most insane things I’ve ever driven. But being honest with you, The Model 3 Performance was more fun. Which is how I got to this point. Give me a 2-door, rwd over powered sports car. Please and thank you.

mortalic ,

Agreed on all points… I’m glad the 5N exists, but it’s not what I want.

mortalic ,

I find syncthing on android wrecks my battery. How have you been using it that doesn’t do this?

mortalic ,

Thanks I just uninstalled and used the fdroid sync thing fork

mortalic ,

I’ve just started using Fedora recently and have been pretty impressed but I also ran into some of these annoying issues to start with. I wrote a super quick and dirty first run script to automate the things I use but maybe others will find it useful. I just added it to my GitHub if anyone wants to use it as well. I am not responsible if it wrecks your system.

mortalic ,

Of course hope it’s helpful. Feel free to open a pull request if you want to make any changes or add something

mortalic ,

K… This is just not true. Plenty of AAA games run well on the steam deck. Currently installed on mine, RDR2, cyberpunk 2077, horizon zero dawn, Forza horizon, uncharted legacy of thieves, the last of us, and for funsies I just started another fallout 4 playthrough. I’m sure others have lots of other AAA games they play on their deck.

If it’s the exclusives you’re missing, like Gran Turismo or something, I think that’s a different argument.

mortalic ,

I mean, the nuance you describe is notable. But I sit on the couch, using controllers and play the same games you would on ps or Xbox. Both of which run variants of Linux/windows.

It appears the nuance is no longer important.

mortalic ,

Why do you say it isn’t a proper substitute? What features is it missing?

CAD Software Suggestion

I am currently on win10 but have been toying with mint and liking it. I intend on fully switching over soon. I have also been toying with the idea of some simple 3D modeling, like making custom parts for projects around my house. Maybe using a CAD software to generate stls for a 3D print or using it to spec out parts for a...

mortalic ,

The thing I’m struggling with is finding beginner videos for ondsel. The ui is super different, so freecad videos don’t help much. Any suggestions?

mortalic ,

You may not realize it but you’re kind of making my point. You have prior experience. An Ondsel getting started video is really needed. Especially since they want to charge for it.

mortalic ,

I just installed fedora 40. Was absolutely amazed when my three monitors just worked. Installed some games and realized I had forgotten to install the Nvidia drivers. Installed them… Laptop locked up wouldn’t boot. Unplugged the third monitor and it started working. Screw Nvidia. Not buying another system with their trash. Fix your driver’s you selfish POS

mortalic ,

A suggestion for everyone that’s kinda new, and to be honest, grizzled vets too… Use chatgpt as a trouble shooting tool. It’s really surprising how good it is sometimes. I’ve had it write bash scripts in minutes, solve obscure Firefox issues, fix game settings for barely compatible games… So many things

How are newer cars (gas/hybrid) supposed to sound?

Context: I drive a 15+ year old SUV, and I am no longer in the position to just replace everything should anything bad happen. So sadly I will have to buy a newer car at some point. Hopefully not anytime soon 🤞🏼🤞🏼 But, I noticed when shopping with other people that newer cars sound weird. My knowledge of car...

Most main stream, dare I say appliance cars, have what is called a rattly ass 4cyl. Not to be confused with nice sounding 4cyl engines.

I’ve also noticed new cars sound bad.

mortalic ,

Ooof don’t mistake intent… It’s difficult over text. Rattly ass 4 cylinder isn’t a term I coined. Some sound good, some sound bad, modern engines are stifled and amazing all at the same time. Mainstream appliance 4 cylinder are designed for fuel and emissions

mortalic ,

Indeed, but also it’s worth a read if you plan on making it your daily driver. The article touches on things like, even though it’s arch based, it uses an old kernel among some other things.

While you’re right about the spirit of the use case, you’re missing the details.

mortalic ,

Being honest here, I have a car with android auto and I hate having to plug it in for a variety of reasons.

  1. I just want to get in and drive, the music should just play and all the stuff should just get out of the way.
  2. I don’t want to charge my phone every time I drive my car, it’s not necessary and can be hard on the battery
  3. This is doubly important for an EV, I don’t want to waste EV power charging a phone that doesn’t need charging

My opinion, Phone OS makers need to get their shit together around android auto / apple carplay. Too much nonsense gets in the way of all the actually important pieces. When you get in a car with only a radio, the music just starts playing when you get in. Which means, your experience is better with old tech. That’s just ridiculous.

I personally think a better idea is to just start equipping cars with cell modems that you add to your plan or something. There is no need to offload this work to your cellphone when the car has more physical space for that kind of thing anyway. I mean tesla’s just have a borderline gaming computer in them these days.

mortalic ,

Starlight was such a great game. My friends Grandpa made hand drawn maps for it.

mortalic ,

Where I live, this is changing already. I suspect it comes down to your lawmakers and how you vote more than landlords. Landlords will never do something unless it makes them easy money. Though, ev chargers can be profitable, so maybe they are just dumb.

mortalic ,

You don’t need one for every condo. Though that would be awesome. It’s not like you need to charge every day.

Is there any love for BAR (Beyond All Reason-FOSS RTS) on Lemmy?

I just finally got into this game and I’m completely shell shocked! I had seen it recommended before but ventured into other games without giving it a fair shake. As an avid RTS fan since Dune: The battle for Arrakis on Sega genesis, I’ve been slowly feeling more and more lackluster in the genres future prospects. I was a...

I do not regret moving to proton. I only wish they had more services.

mortalic OP ,

I’ve got some bad news for you.

mortalic OP ,

Thank you for the feedback. SyncThingy is awesome. I can’t believe I didn’t know about it.

mortalic OP ,

Honestly, it’s an engagement experiment.

mortalic OP ,

Furiously taking notes… Not really though, while substack has some annoying behavior, setting a paywall is up the the writer. I turned it off.
