If I remember right for steam, you can’t disable updates for all games, but you can set some restrictive rules for when it can update. Stuff like it can only download updates for 1 minute monday morning at 3am.

JackbyDev OP ,

Ooooh, this might be a great workaround. If I launch a game does it override this to download the update immediately?

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

I’m not sure to be honest.

Davel23 ,

If you launch a game through Steam and there's an update available for it, then Steam will force the update before it will run the game. Some games can be run by navigating to its install directory and running the executable directly, that should bypass any updates but will not work for all games.

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Some games also have beta channels that are just the past versions of the game. Weather this exists or not is completely up to the game publisher though. I mostly see it in games that have active mod communities, so they want to let you lock down your version so your mod pack doesn’t break suddenly.

julianh ,

You can also use offline mode.

JackbyDev OP ,

Too fiddly. I don’t want to constantly enable and disable it. Thank you though.

If I am calling IT to fix anything, it’s because I’ve exhausted all the usual things to fix it (restart, clear cache, make sure everything is seated, googled the issue, etc). 9 times outta 10, they’re just as stumped as I am and the device simply gets replaced. That 10th time tho it’s something I’ve never encountered but they have.

DokPsy ,

That’s how one becomes IT

BigPotato ,

I would call IT and give them error codes and attempted remedies. They would do house calls and leave with a few rip its. Everyone in my office usually had my call IT because they (my coworkers and the IT guys) knew I’d at least tried something. If someone else from the office called IT, they knew that I was out of the office or the user was lying about something.

Ookami38 ,

I support doing the troubleshooting yourself. Just be aware, if you call with one of those 9 out of 10 cases, we’re still going to have to do ALL of those steps again, so I can document that we tried them before sending any hardware. I’ve been burned one too many times by someone telling me they’ve already tried something.

psivchaz ,

I started in IT before switching to development. I have CCNA, A+, and Apple Pro certifications. I run Arch at home, btw. But when I have to contact IT, usually for something that needs elevated permissions or bad hardware, I’m just another user. It’s mildly infuriating to go through all the steps again, even after explaining what I did. I get it, I really do, but it’s not fun at all.

NegativeLookBehind , in "Working with Gen AI" by Dandytoon
@NegativeLookBehind@lemmy.world avatar

When I used to try and ask AI for help, most of the time it would just give me fake command combinations or reference some made-up documentation

Drewelite ,

The best one I’ve used for coding is the InelliJ AI. Idk how they trained that sucker but it’s pretty good at ripping through boiler plate code and structuring new files / methods based off how your project is already setup. It still has those little hallucinations especially when you ask it to figure out more niche tasks. But It’s really increased my productivity. Especially when getting a new repo setup. (I work with micro services)

Passerby6497 ,

Yeah, formatting is the only place that I really enjoy using AI. It’s great at pumping out blocks of stuff and frequently gets the general idea of what I’m going for with successive variables or tasks. But when you ask it to do complex things it wigs out. Like yesterday when it spit out a regex to look for something within multiple encapsulation chars just fine, but telling it to remove one of the chars it was looking for was impossible, apparently. Spent 5 min doing something I figured out in 2 minutes on a regex test site.

P.S Now make one about people who squash 100 commits into one without cleaning up the message and have a single commit with 1k added / 2k removed in it for the sake of “clean” history.

Anti Commercial-AI license

JackbyDev ,

Yesssss, so true. Anytime people say they want history to be “clean” I insist they explain what they mean because more often than not they’re going to suggest something that makes the history way less useful.

It’s best not to touch anything web related, lest you want to go mad. It’s like the elder scrolls or laying eyes on some cosmic horror creature. Tbf this also goes for C++

Buttons ,
@Buttons@programming.dev avatar

At least C++ build tools are easier than modern JS.

marcos ,

I don’t think “easier” is the right way to compare here. The C++ build tools will absolutely rewrite your code into something you can’t expect to guess, but it doesn’t make them hard to “use”.
