I'm not entirely sure how hashtags render in Lemmy, but I added that one because I think fundamentally it's what the picture is about: Freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, press freedom, freedom from arbitrary violence.
Of course it's a case of freedom being infringed upon, but I nevertheless think it's a central thematic.

When the war with Ukraine started, people in Russia went to protest it. Thousands were arrested on day one. No one remembers that now and it wasn’t reported much in the West.

There’s a bunch of videos on Twitter/X showing how they pushed her into that position, turned her around, and hauled her off before cuffing her and detaining her. She was thankfully released later, but this is just far too much. All of it is.
Not even. One police officer decides your sus while you’re armed and that’s it. They’re allowed to execute you on the spot. That’s not a right, that’s a privilege with a death sentence for anyone who mistakes themselves as part of the privileged class.

Which brings us back to the point of a gun being an excuse to execute you on the spot. Which also means you don’t actually have a 2nd amendment right. Rights that you only technically have, aren’t actually extant.

Those are “de-escalation devices”. First, you beat them with thing 1. If that doesn’t calm them down, you stun them with thing 2. If they are still not calm, you shoot them with thing 3. Repeat until America great again.

THAT’S how the 2nd amendment and much else of the Constitution was intended to be used, I feel. Y’know, before the people lost their damn minds for various reasons, and maybe they understood the importance of backing each other to keep the power-hungry at bay.
But now we’ve stood aside as we got things like State-defined rules for having proper unobtrusive protests, and unions that must be “authorized” and promise not to get in the way too much, binding arbitration without a right to a jury trial, and police shove and beat journalists while a loud chunk of the population says “He must’ve had a good reason! Nah, there are not enough cops in the USA to arrest us all. The ratio of population to police is overwhelmingly vast. For every 1000 Americans there are only 2 or 3 police.
I’m not one for conspiracies or whatever, but I do worry about escalation. I’m not worried too much about the cops themselves, most of them are just bullies and not that bright. I’m worried about who the government sends when the cops can’t contain a situation.
It will be PMC, and they will execute us. All republicans and conservatives will cheer.
It hit me like a truck back in 2020 how Trump could hire goons to execute my young children in front of me, or even do it himself, and everyone who voted for him would cheer it. That is who Trump voters are at their core.
