Republicans will claim this is further proof they’re being illegally silenced, their supporters will lap it up and rage hate online. And the divide will ever grow wider.
Yes, but, that rage and anger will turn some to act. Without knowing who all could be hurt, this should at least send a lot more of them to jail. If they can’t be bothered to know the laws beforehand or have their guy strip away that power, then it’s off to jail! I just hope too many aren’t hurt in the process. Truth and rightfulness alone can’t protect us.
Well there’s something called objective reality, based on facts and science, not opinion. If you don’t acknowledge it, any rational discussion becomes impossible. So don’t be surprised if you are kept away from these discussions.
I’ve been hearing a lot of Neville Chamberlains decrying every action to hold Republicans accountable or establish rules to curtail bad behavior as widening the divide, but I’ve yet to see any attempts to bridge that gap(by the Left) have any positive effect, much less get reciprocated.
They don’t care about fairness, or law, or compromise. They only want more, and if you don’t establish boundaries, they’ll keep taking more.
I agree, it has been shown that decoupling people from their source of propaganda can deradicalize (some of) them. So yes they’ll be angry for a while, but it’ll be good in the long run.
Good point, nicely done, and nobody in the US will care. The politicians in charge know this point already, that IS the point. They don’t give a shit about the wall, they want to rile their racist base so that they vote for them
A gentle reminder that if you pay for a cable or satellite TV package, even if you don’t watch fox, you’re still giving money to Fox. They get a cut of every Cable TV and Satellite TV subscriber.
OANN doesn’t have a FCC broadcast license. They’re cable only.
WTXF is owned and operated by the Fox corporation, one of 18 such Fox-affiliated stations in the country (Fox owns others but they don’t run any sort of news/“news” programming, so are probably safe). Even if all of them lose their broadcast license over this, it wouldn’t really affect the main Fox News cable channel at all.
It’s so annoying to hear certain folks acting like all the problems in America come from this Thunderdome type situation at the boarder with Mexico. And never do they have any recommendation that doesn’t involve hurting people or invading Mexico out other ridiculous things. Just the other day I heard someone talking about all the Chinese people coming across the Mexico boarder and how they were actually spies for China. Fifteen years ago they were Muslims and terrorists.
I think part of it is a psychological safety strategy for people that don’t have the strength to look at their own issues. For them, it’s a lot safer to blame others than accepting any responsibility.
Can Corps of Engineers not do the math? I get that we can create infrastructure like this, especially for a major military base, but how can anyone think the cost and ongoing maintenance is scalable to the number of coastal cities?
– Rebuilding reefs is a great idea: reducing storm surge and no moving parts to need replacing
— vegetation is a great idea: reduce erosion with no moving parts to need replacing
Ok fine, Boston has had flood gates for over 100 years
In a nutshell: A lot of cultures (especially a lot of Native Americans) have a(n often harvest) festival that involves burning an effigy that represents negative emotions, hardship, etc. And it is generally human shaped because that made it a lot easier to spin it as “This effigy represents The Other tribe across the river. They are the bad people and the cause of all your problems” as needed.
And like 40 something years ago, a bunch of white artists were cranky that the locals didn’t want their input on what kind of paint scheme or sculptures would really make that ancestral tradition POP. So they made their own version in a desert with blackjack and hookers.
Then twenty-ish years ago, a bunch of rich folk and the nouveau rich techbros realized that these artists with their excessive amounts of hallucinogenics and “free love” lifestyle really know how to party. So they took it over as a way to party for a week or two every year.
And the key is: Regardless of your socioeconomic backgrond, you can come together with the joys of getting high, oogling some hot chicks, and appropriating some culture. All while talking about how this makes you a better and more enlightened person.
And in all seriousness: if you ever get the chance, go to an ACTUAL effigy burning festival. A lot of, generally Southwest, cities still have them and still respect the origins and it makes for a truly fascinating and, honestly, kind of spiritual experience as you learn, eat amazing food, and take part in something that goes back thousands of years… even if a lot of the Others were the American people…
Yeah. Been to Zozobra a few times over the years and it is always a blast. There… is a lot of “artists” doing the cultural appropriation with that too but it feels more like a natural evolution since it is the character of the town and a lot of Native Americans are still involved.
I have also heard there are some amazing festivals out in Arizona but travel never lined up for that.
I went to Zozobra a bunch in the late 90’s and early 00’s. Then I just got sick of the tourist trappings of it all.
Balloon Fiesta really traumatized my dog. Now she growls and barks at any hot air balloon she sees. Even after moving to Colorado, she still can’t stand balloons.
Living in a tourist town really isn’t as fun year-round like it is on vacations.
And it is generally human shaped because that made it a lot easier to spin it as “This effigy represents The Other tribe across the river. They are the bad people and the cause of all your problems” as needed.
It’s too bad that the “other tribe” technique still works so well in today’s politics.
If people ever started paying attention to the meta of the species, they’d realize we’re all more like each other than we think.
We inhabit an era where the question “what do we do about Fox News propaganda?” sees a real shortage of solutions that are both practical and don’t run afoul of the First Amendment. Everything in the conversation tends to steer toward what’s not possible. Or they involve unworkable gibberish like trying to bring back the Fairness Doctrine (which wouldn’t apply to cable TV anyway).
So I think it’s good that activists are trying something creative and new. I think it’s good to have a broader conversation about what can actually be done about authoritarian and right wing propaganda. I think it’s good to form new, bipartisan coalitions that finally recognize the harm in partisan propaganda masquerading as news. Because our efforts up to this point have consisted of either stoic tut-tutting about what’s not possible under the First Amendment, or half-baked incoherence.
Agreed. The best things you can do to protect yourself from COVID are getting vaccinated and staying up-to-date with any boosters and maintaing basic hygiene like washing your hands before sticking your fingers in your mouth, etc.
Masks are best at keeping your germs to yourself, so you don’t spread it to others.
Before the onset of this latest surge, if you weren’t sick, and did the above, there was no real reason to regularly wear a mask. No reason for regret.
Why is an 80 year old allowed to drive a bus? At that age, your reaction time and attentiveness are severely hindered. He could have easily killed someone riding with him, or if he crashed into someone.
This is run of the mill for Ohio cops. I grew up there, I’ve seen it all my life. They are a reckless, racist, violent group of thugs with the mentality of the KGB. If you’re ever so unfortunate as to find yourself there, and in the presence of one, LEAVE. don’t do a fuckin thing that might garner their attention.
They’re also fanatical about pulling people over, they’ll pull you over for ANYTHING. and if you’re not the whitest of white, you’re gonna have a real bad time.
