FlyingSquid , in Former Lehigh University Freshman faked his father's death for full scholarship
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I realize this is a case of a foreign person committing fraud to get into an American university, but I honestly thought going into it that kids are that desperate to pay for college these days without taking out punishing loans. And I’m sure there are American kids desperate enough to commit fraud for that purpose too.

randon31415 , in Nevada adds proposed constitutional amendment for abortion rights to 2024 ballot

Remember when SCOTUS threw out laws against gays? Then a bunch of states passed constitutional amendments against gay marriage? Then SCOTUS came and said “Na, none of that means anything, gay marriage for all!”

I feel like I am on the other side of that process this time: SCOTUS throws out Roe, bunch of states do constitutional amendments, SCOTUS rules “Na, none of that means anything, all abortions are now illegal!”

SCOTUS throws out Roe, bunch of states do constitutional amendments, SCOTUS rules “Na, none of that means anything, all abortions are now illegal!”

I don’t see that happening given the direct text of Dobbs:

The Court overrules those decisions and returns that authority to the people and their elected representatives.

randon31415 ,

Since when was this court consistent with prior rulings?

pubquiz , in Steve Bannon must report to prison by Monday after Supreme Court rejects last-minute appeal.

The fuckhole is going to finally serve some time. He can never be referred to as anything but a convicted felon from now on. Rot in hell, maggotbag. LOL

Letstakealook , in Facial Recognition Led to Wrongful Arrests. So Detroit Is Making Changes.

The change they should be supporting is “don’t.”

Aurenkin , in Idaho book ban goes into effect on Monday

While the Bible contains each of these concepts in both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, it does not seem that Christian and Jewish texts were the intended target of the ban, but rather books written by queer or Black authors.

So what, if those are the absurd rules that have passed they should be applied. If your special book meets the criteria sounds like a good reason not to have such a law in the first place.

FlyingSquid , in Iranian reformist Pezeshkian and hard-liner Jalili head to runoff presidential election

“Reformist.” What a joke. As if any reforms can be made while the mullahs run the country.

disguy_ovahea , in National Security and Foreign Policy Highlights from the June 2024 Presidential Debate

These are all very valid points of comparison. It’s a shame they weren’t clearly conveyed by either of them during the debate.

Trump wants Israel to finish what they started and expand into Palestinian territory.

He told Orbán that he intends to pull support from Ukraine if he becomes President again.

He will turn his back on any NATO allies that don’t pay enough.

He’s weak on regulating human rights violations in Chinese trade, and considers Taiwan our primary economic rival.

And I don’t think I need any links to substantiate his ongoing love affair with Putin and Kim.

The Idaho Library Association is against the bill and says it is harmful to young people, librarians and LGBTQ+ people.

Yes, that is the point.

FlyingSquid , in Nature interrupted: Impact of the US-Mexico border wall on wildlife
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Wait… you mean humans have developed some sort of technology that can get to the top of a wall? Why… to do that, you’d need to put a bunch of horizontal pieces of wood between two vertical pieces of wood and somehow stick them all together!

FiniteBanjo , in Appeals court seems lost on how Internet Archive harms publishers

AA5B , in Oklahoma schools head Ryan Walters: Teachers who won't teach Bible could lose license

they’d face the same consequences as one who refuses to teach about the Civil War

Now I’m really afraid to find out what this includes

teawrecks ,

Which is a hilarious Freudian slip on their part. Who is it that they think don’t want to teach about the Civil War? Could it be the ones who instead refer to it as the “war of northern aggression” and try to erase the context of slavery by saying it was about “states rights”?
