Take the hint people... move

Exactly. This. Unsustainable development. It’s Florida real estate has been a Ponzi scheme for at least twenty years.

What? The super genius couldn’t turn it into a cash machine? I thought he was the smartest (and funniest) person on the planet!

Bonehead ,

I think this is the saddest part, at least for him. Before Twitter, a lot of people thought he was relatively intelligent to be a part of a groundbreaking electric car company, a crazy tunnel digging company, and wild space vehicle company doing innovative things. Now since Twitter, we see an insanely rich narcissistic meglomaniac that was kept out of most Tesla big decisions as he just wanted the publicity for himself, the tunnel digging company was nothing more than a way to interfere with green projects, SpaceX did the same thing as Tesla and succeeded despite Musk's involvement, and a once respected medium of open communication worth a reported $44 billion dollars devolve into a cess pool of bigotry and arbitrary restrictions. Whatever good will he built for himself over the years that saw him even get a cameo in a Marvel movie next to Tony Stark, he's burned through most of it in the eyes of a lot of people.

Does your daddy own an emerald mine though? That’s kind of the key here.

rtxn ,

SpaceX and Tesla both grew with his continuous involvement. The managers were trained (out of necessity) to keep his “genius” in check without destroying the company or getting themselves fired. In a sense, Musk’s continuous presence gave the companies a form of immunity.

When he infested the bird, the managers didn’t know how to protect it. It was like bringing smallpox to the new world.

Mildly profitable for about 2 years. After 12 years of losses. Then lost money even before the moron bought it.

Twitter was a great space for breaking news, official alerts like weather, earthquakes and tsunamis, for developing election day tallies.
The "you mean Grimes left the king of SpaceX?" manchild broke all that.

You mean cozying up to human traffickers and literal Nazis and limiting people to reading a handful of tweets per day didn’t convince advertisers to invest??? Who could have imagined that?

yoz ,

Lol he doesnt care bro. Remember he’s a billionaire, even if he spends $20 million a day, he won’t be able to spend it all in his lifetime. 9-5 plebs like us can only wish of this one day to put this into perspective, I got a $200k loan which will take me 30 years to pay it back lol

whatsarefoogee ,

He paid 44 billion for twitter, that’s pretty big chunk of his wealth. And most of his wealth is tied to his shares in Tesla/SpaceX and he can’t liquidate them without massive negative impacts on their value.

A lot of billionaires are rich on paper. $44 billion of liquid assets is much more than it would appear.

Tygr , in Elon Musk says Twitter cash flow is negative due to ad revenue declines, ‘heavy debt’

You don’t buy a heavily liberal swayed network and flip it heavily conservative. All of your advertisers will have an issue and it takes a long time to bring in new advertisers that like the new direction.

That’s like buying Truth Social and banning Trump.

P.S. I can’t stand Twitter. Never liked it, never will.

ThunderingJerboa ,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

Hell lets be honest here, I think many advertisers do sway more heavily conservative but the problem is advertisers want stability. Elon basically opened the flood gates to let anything go (as long as he agrees with them) and that created massive change at once. So you have to play the game of pandering to your audience who are likely going to be on the left just due to the left being a far more numerous group and no big advertiser would want an ad anywhere near a racial tirade. Like the higher ups of these corporations can and may be incredibly racist but you don't want your brand associated with it since you basically cut off a sizeable part of your market in the space you are trying to advertise. At the end of the day they want money and they don't want to rock the boat visibly.

Yeah this is all lining up way too neatly on the timeline of him meeting with Putin, then buying twitter. Guys a russian asset working to undermine western communications supportive of ukraine.

whatsarefoogee ,

People need to stop with these conspiracies that it’s some kind of 4d chess. We have a recorded history of Musk trying to get out of the deal with every excuse in the book. He only folded when his private communications becoming were being considered to become part of the legal process.

He ran his mouth, like he has done before with Tesla, except this time he got held accountable for it.

Tygr , in Florida rocked by home insurance crisis: ‘I may have to sell up and move’

I’d like to disclose I’m a non-Florida mortgage lender with lender friends in Florida. It’s starting to really impact interested buyers. When they see the premiums, they run.

There’s some places where buyers can’t find anyone willing to insure. Well, if there’s no homeowner’s insurance, there’s no mortgage loan either.

It’s not looking good and certain areas of California (fire-prone areas) and starting down this same path.

It should be interesting to see what happens to inventory and values over the months and years ahead.

IHeartBadCode , in Florida rocked by home insurance crisis: ‘I may have to sell up and move’
@IHeartBadCode@kbin.social avatar

As much as everyone is willing to find anything disparaging for Florida, there’s more here to take away. California is in the same situation and ultimately every State will come to face this.

The underlying issue is climate change. Insurance bets long and with the climate changing on an almost yearly basis now, there isn’t a long game to play. If the various leaders of this planet do not act on this challenge the long term cost is only going to go up.

Florida and California are just the heralds, this IS ABSOLUTELY coming to every doorstep on this planet.

chaogomu ,

One major difference between Florida and California; Florida passed laws banning policies based on climate change. As in, the government there cannot plan for it, and insurers have to pretend it's not happening to operate in the state.

So the insurers have decided to pull out of the state completely.

The state government under DeSantis is telling Florida "this is normal" while streets melt and the world burns.

The thousands of workers that will lose their jobs. And every other worker that recognises how technology replacing their roles or being used to destroy salaries affects them.

I’m glad you’re so sheltered and insulated from the consequences of it that you can behave this way, but the rest of us aren’t.

nednobbins , in Chinese Scientists Are Leaving the United States

There’s a bigger picture at play too. China has been making itself attractive for researchers in general. It’s not just Chinese scientists moving back. An increasing number of other scientists are choosing to work in China over the U.S.

In fields where China was pushing it earlier we’re starting to see the results already. There are several fields where a plurality of top tier publications come from China.

Cosmonauticus ,

What makes america such a bad place for researchers?

schroedingershat ,

No idea if China is better but western academia requires spending 95% of your time playing politics/begging for funding and pays worse than fast food for the first decade or so whilst requiring you to go into debt you will never pay off while everyone around you not-in-academia accuses you of being a woke coastal elite, grooming children, and spreading lies about poor defenseless shell and chevron for profit.

nednobbins ,

Debt is likely less of an issue here. These are PhDs and they tend to be funded by grants. Students typically pay no tuition and get some stipend for expenses.

Of course, graduating debt free with a PhD in molecular biology from a top program is less exciting when you can’t land a single interview for a junior faculty role.

Industry may pay twice as much but if you love research and China offers you lab space, you’ll consider it.

Drusas ,

Immigration policies make it hard for people to stay after finishing their education.

nednobbins ,

I think it’s primarily two things.

China now graduates almost twice as many STEM PhDs as the US does. A lot of people move after their PhD but they tend to stay in country.

I also think, anecdotally, that new PhDs have a harder time finding a job here.

Overall China just seems to make more effort to attract scientists. They promise, and deliver, the two things scientists care about, funding and academic freedom.
