I love how they act like they will throw him in jail if he violates the order.

Burn_The_Right ,

Lol, right? I’ll believe that shit when I see it. It’s never going to happen and he knows it.

Goddamn I wish I was wrong.

Vaggumon ,

Same. I think the best we can hope for, and it’s a very long shot, is he gets house arrest at The Redneck Shit House AKA Maralago. And that’s if he is fully convicted 100% on Every single charge.

JakenVeina , in Maui wildfire death toll hits 67 as questions raised over warnings

In the ensuing hours, the county posted a series of evacuation orders on Facebook as the fire spread through the town.

This appears to be just a small piece of the story, not like it was responsible for the disaster, but… is this implying that Facebook is considered a primary ergency alert system? I don’t know how anyone can consider that anything but GROSSLY negligent.

If Facebook is critical infrastructure, then regulate it as such, or seize and nationalize it.

Please put his fat ass in jail when he inevitably threatens the hell out of a witness, ignores direct finger-wagging explanation of how he can’t do exactly that, and then quadruples down on doing it as loudly and bluntly as his meager vocabulary permits.

he can. nobody can really stop him from speaking out however he wants.

the thing is, he’s not immune- or not supposed to be immune- to the consequences of such. and the consequences are getting locked up. Maybe, we should break his knuckles. just for good measure.

JimmyDean , in Maui wildfire death toll hits 67 as questions raised over warnings

The island includes emergency sirens intended to warn of natural disasters and other threats, but they did not appear to have sounded during the fire.

Holy shit. This is just tragic. Who knows how many lives could have been saved if they’d had a proper warning?

Atrabiliousaurus ,

From the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency website

Hawaiʻi has the largest single integrated Outdoor Siren Warning System for Public Safety in the world. The all-hazard siren system can be used for a variety of both natural and human-caused events; including tsunamis, hurricanes, dam breaches, flooding, wildfires, volcanic eruptions, terrorist threats, hazardous material incidents, and more.

They test them here every month too. Shameful they didn’t sound them when needed the most.

mean_bean279 ,

Look at paradise. They had an emergency alert that went out. All it did was gridlock the entire town and people just died on the street instead of in their house. I get that we all want to be mad at something, but the emergency notification would have made a negligible difference given the speed and ferocity of this fire.

ocassionallyaduck , in Hawaii Officials Were Warned Years Ago That Maui’s Lahaina Faced High Wildfire Risk

I mean, what can you do, short of demolishing and rebuilding communities for free to spread them out and lessen risk. Even that only manages it, and it would still all burn when wildfires hit.

Stopping the source and quelling the yearly rise of temperatures that is making it a concern to begin with is the only actual solution.

Hello_there ,

Veg. management is a big contributor. Invasive and ornamentals are typically big causes of fire spread. No predators and uncontrolled growth, and the plant is from some area that never burns instead of the grassland plant that's fire resistant.
Roof shingle regs can also slow spread from embers. Also, increasing density would probably help with this a lot. Concentrate the people at the city center and then there's less people in the outskirts that are at risk

Higgins also pushed back on the notion that Democrats and the liberal left engage in their own echo chambers.

“Critics would say that the liberal echo chamber is CNN, MSNBC and mainstream media,” he said. "I would say in response to that, that quite frankly it’s b*******. “At the RNC all we had to do was repeat talking points and it would go on Fox News as is. Democrats don’t do that, the DNC [Democratic National Committee] doesn’t do it.”

He added: “Also, I think an important thing about what differentiates the left and right and the media—the left has no similar echo chamber as evidenced by the lack of a left-wing freedom caucus.”

Even the ex-Republican staffer doesn’t pull a “both sides” because he knows firsthand that it’s not true.

So why do libs have this mania for killing innocent babies?

    over_clox ,

Are you serious? Nobody, and I mean nobody, is promoting such a thing. It should be the woman’s right to decide though.

My own mother wouldn’t be here today if she hadn’t needed the unfortunate procedure for what would have been an extremely deformed sister of mine.

Let me ask you, is it your uterus? No? Then mind your own business and let women manage their own bodies as they see fit.

    zer0nix ,

Why does god? The vast preponderance of abortions happen in the same window as the vast preponderance of miscarriages, which can happen to 87 percent of fertilized embryos in the case of in vitro fertilization, and some other smaller but also shockingly high number for in vivo fertilization.

Also if you don’t want ‘innocent babies’ to be killed why have such a hard on against prophylactics and plan b, especially since it takes 24h for sperm and egg to actually merge DNA and form a new organism? Why have an issue with birth control or porn or premarital conjugation and why make it everyone else’s issue?

If women are getting abortions in the same period that God randomly gives miscarriages, I tend to think they are actually part of the same thing and that the feeling the prospective mother has about her future child being unwanted is just one final ‘God given’ protection against creating something broken.

    Abolish the police

    LanternEverywhere , (edited )

That's silly, i don't want to live in a modern society without police. I don't want to abolish the police, i want BETTER police than the ones we have now.

    QHC ,

Do you believe the current version of policing in America can be successfully reformed? Can the current officers be sufficiently re-trained? Who is going to patrol the streets until that happens?

When people say abolish the police, they are saying that the current system has to be entirely dismantled and replaced. You actually appear to agree with the end objective.

    LanternEverywhere ,

If that's what they mean then they're terribly miscommunicating, because they're literally saying something completely different.

    QHC ,

Not really. “Abolish the police [as they currently exist]” is just step 1.

    Burn_The_Right ,

It can. Every act of oppression, bigotry, racism, homophobia, xenophobia and misogyny comes from one particular profile of cop. Conservative. Remove conservatives from policing and those issues stop almost completely.

There are a few good cops and every single one of them is a progressive.

    ThrowawayPermanente ,

While we’re at it would you guys like to be in control of the military, schools, and the media too?

    Burn_The_Right ,

Only if there is a problem with oppression of vulnerable groups in those places.

Conservatives can’t resist oppressing vulnerable people. That’s just who they are at their core.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

No, I would like them to not be in control of the military, schools and the media. There’s a difference.

    stopthatgirl7 OP ,
    @stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar
    LanternEverywhere ,

Yes, i know, that's why i said i want better police.

    smegger ,

Exactly. Employ educated police, gotta be less likely to do dodgy crap because they’ll have a proper understanding of the laws. Also, why is it an elected position? You’d think that’s gonna make it a prime motivation for corruption, just make it a position assigned based on experience and knowledge.

    JustZ ,
    @JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah we would still have that. They just wouldn’t be called police anymore. I used to think it was hyperbole to say that every police agency in the US traces it’s origins to slave patrols, and now I realize that it is true.

The entire notion of policing, armed people reacting to crimes, catching criminals like cat and mouse, is what is broken. It doesn’t reduce crime, it makes more. It breaks families and communities. And what do we get in return? At best, we get to make a criminal feel extra bad by putting them in jail for a long long time. That model must end.

There will still be a reactionary force to call when warranted. But the force that responds when shit hits the fan and the force you call when you’re in a fender bender don’t need to be the same thing. Virtually every police call can be better handled by health and welfare services. Building affordable housing reduces the crime rate. Teaching people skills reduces the crime rate. That’s what the police force should be aimed at. But no, we have cat and mouse.
