some_guy , in WHO recommends dropping component of many flu vaccines

I read about one strain of flu that hadn’t been detected since lockdowns last year. Pretty cool side-effect.

Trainguyrom , in US jail practices are racist and an 'affront to human dignity,' UN experts say

The headline says “jail” but the article only refers to cases in prisons. I know the entire criminal justice system is messed up, but did this UN study specifically find both jails and prisons to be severely repressive and racist?

This is an important distinction because jail is where people wait pre-trail, meaning they typically have not yet been found to be guilty of the charges brought against them, while prison is where people who have been charged, found guilty and sentenced to prison will go. Jail is where a cop that decides to arrest someone for dubious reasons will take them, whether that’s enforcing an unconstitutional law (such as flag desecration laws which is protected speech under federal caselaw), findings from a blatantly illegal search, or even they arrested the wrong person because they went to the wrong address to execute a warrant, or any number of other reasons

calypsopub ,

That is a good distinction to make, but even convicted felons should be treated humanely.

ThatFembyWho ,

while prison is where people who have been charged, found guilty and sentenced to prison will go

Not strictly true, jails can also house those convicted of less serious crimes (say, less than 1yr), as well as temporarily awaiting transfer to other facilites.

Looks like the UN only visited jails in person, but interviewed people with a range of experiences. You can read the full report here: ohchr.org/…/systemic-racism-pervades-us-police-an…

Do other major countries use jails the way we do? 💀

Oi’ you got a license for being a celebrity?

some_guy , in Black musician says he was falsely accused of trafficking his own children aboard American Airlines flight

This is what you get when right-wingers hype child trafficking bullshit as culture war. Child trafficking is real and terrible. But it looks nothing like what the internet tells them it is. They see it everywhere because they have distorted ideas about what it is. See The Sound of Freedom

Omegamanthethird ,
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

It’s fucking sad. When liberals get shit wrong, it’s embarrassing. You worry about it delegitimizing real situations. You question what led to where you are now. It’s a big deal.

Conservatives just double or triple down. Fuck the real victims. Fuck the falsely accused. Fuck getting better. Fuck shame.

lolcatnip ,

Also when could conservatives get things wrong, it’s usually on purpose.

some_guy ,

See as in example, not endorse. I now realize my poor choice of words.

prole ,

It’s all intentional too. They want to muddy the waters, and make words like “grooming” meaningless. And they’ve largely succeeded.

PatFussy , in Uber, Grubhub and DoorDash must pay NYC delivery workers an $18 minimum wage

Remember when minimum wage driver work went up for a vote in California under prop 22 and we still voted against it? Im always so mad every election cycle i feel like everyone is a complete moron working against themselves

Cheesus ,

Unfortunately corporate advertising works when it comes to elections

hayes_ ,

Copying my own comment from another thread:

In those workers’ defense, the delivery companies spent hundreds of millions of dollars on a disinformation campaign to trick the public into thinking that voting for 22 was in their own interest.

It’s absurd that it was on the ballot in the first place.

honey_im_meat_grinding ,

Is it fair to call people stupid when they’re facing a literal corporate propaganda campaign? I’d sooner reach for “corporations are evil” than “people are stupid” in that case. Remember how people used to treat you if you were against the Iraq war? And today, we know that thing was unnecessary and awful. Sometimes powerful people just manage to convince us of things that aren’t true.

PatFussy ,

You dont have to always be the victim, dont strip away your obligation for due diligence just because some corporation made a nice commercial.

Buddahriffic ,

It’s not one or the other. The corporate propaganda works because people are stupid.

Kolanaki ,

I agree in so far as the human brain is pretty fucking stupid and easily “hacked.” Especially when companies literally pay psychologists to get better at brain hacking.

Astroturfed , in Black BYU student says he was harassed while recording social media posts

If this was anywhere but BYU I’d assume they were being a public nuisance. Really wish it wasn’t so normalized/accepted to accost people for videos or really anything in public. Sales, signatures w/e.

Or its a reminder of our mortality, and that anytime something random can happy to cause us to lose our lives. This means we have to use the time we have with greater purpose because we don’t know when it will end. I can allow us to get closer to those we love and let them know it so should something like this happen to us we’ll know they know we loved them.

A slightly above average looking white woman died. That gets clicks and is the reason the article exists.

Same reason there are so many stories about missing white women with moderately attractive photos, but you don't see many for non-white women, men, or less attractive white women.

People say this drives clicks, but this is exactly the kind if story a local newspaper would have published fifty years ago too.

snooggums ,

Clicks is just the modern equivalent of subscriptions. People 50 years ago subscribed to newspapers to see this kind of stuff.
