I’m here thinking: “but gunshots are not a disease? Wait, gunshots ARE treated at hospitals, and probably take a lot more resources to treat than, say, a fever. So it does fall within his purview in my uninformed opinion.”
And then I thought “But why are people shooting each other? Maybe he should have declared a mental health crisis?”
So to conclude, I think it would be more productive to treat the mental health issue, and gun crimes should reduce. Of course, reducing the number and availability of guns would help too, but seems a harder problem to tackle.
This is actually the main policy stance of the Liberal Gun Club. That we’re spending all this time regulating guns and ignoring/underaddressing the root causes like mental health issues, domestic violence, toxic masculinity, income inequality, poverty, etc.
Not to say that guns shouldn’t be regulated to some extent, but with the way mental health is in America I’m pretty sure we’d just see a spike in knife and baseball bat crime and suicide by hanging if we somehow magically got rid of guns.
Canada says “High”. we don’t have a functional mental health solution and it’s only gotten worse. And while we do have gun crime, it’s nowhere near the same as our southern neighbour because of our gun restrictions and we don’t Fetishize gun culture.
Mental health IS part of the problem. But the insane culture around owning firearms in the US directly leads to the prevalence of gun crime.
That’s fair. People have to pick their own targets. If I ever encounter people that served in the IDF currently in the future I’ll definitely think of them as targets.
I don’t even know why you’d have to sample other songs to generate good music from an algorithm. Just have it randomly play “the four chords” and it is guaranteed to make something that sounds good.
The town I grew up in is in the middle of a cancer cluster. The largest factory (where most people work) got caught illegally dumping chemicals in the ground. They were just made to pay a relatively small fine. The corporation was threatening to move the plant somewhere else if it became too expensive to operate there, and all lawsuits were dismissed.
That factory, and most other factories in the area primarily just hire “temp” workers that they keep as temps for years, never actually hire them full time, and pay them near minimum wage with no benefits. Many young people who do end up staying in that area become drug addicts and die in their 20s or 30s.
There’s a lot of corruption in the local government and police as well. The police harass anybody they don’t like, and they know pretty much who everybody is and what they drive. A few people in government got caught embezzling money. A sheriff tried to frame somebody for murder. Also, I think the people in the courts have some kind of deal with the juvenile detention center, because they give kids very long sentences for minor things (6 months for being 10 minutes late to school while on probation in my case).
Small towns, in my experience, are shitholes with corrupt and authoritarian local governments, and are exploited by corporations in ways similar to third-world countries.
Just listing reasons why small towns are shitholes… or at least that particular small town. People there are at a high risk of drug addiction because of “shit-life syndrome,” (which is arguably caused by the low wages of the factories).
Why would they panic? They’ll just play their usual pigeon chess: knocking the pieces over, crapping on the board, and flying off to announce that they have won.
Vaping scandal? I don’t think that’s how most people recognize it. Also I thought the district she left was less conservative. I thought she was in a safer District now. Is that not right?
Basically doctors fucked up and removed staples too soon. They did this to my ex after our second son was born. Took the staples out and she almost died from sepsis.
Honestly, a part of me was a bit disappointed that’s not what it was. I was so invested and curious to learn why that could even happen, only to find it didn’t.
I would’ve said I learned it when I was 12 being repeatedly sexually assaulted by three boys at once on the bus ride home every day for a month but now is good too I guess.
You can be unsurprised AND say wtf. I do it all the time when patients run down the hall naked and covered in shit. Sometimes life just sucks so bad that even the expected stuff warrants a nice hot shower with a cold beer, and in the moment you just say wtf so you don’t have to think about the situation any more than you already have.
