It’s just our legislators helping to kick off Striketober! But seriously this is a terrible pain in the ass for anyone who actually depends on government services (which on some level is pretty much all of us).
BYU is always on the racist/sexist side of things, along with a large chunk of the population there. Check out Utah’s demographics from census.gov:
White alone, percent - 90.0%
Black or African American alone, percent - 1.6%
American Indian and Alaska Native alone, percent - 1.5%
Asian alone, percent - 2.8%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone, percent - 1.2%
Two or More Races, percent - 2.9%
Hispanic or Latino, percent - 15.1%
White alone, not Hispanic or Latino, percent - 76.7%
For BYU, while the share of White students is overall lower compared to the state, there is an even smaller share of Black students, with the Dept. of Education reporting 0% Black students (this doesn’t mean there aren’t any, but it shows how few Black students there are):
White alone, percent - 81.0%
Black or African American alone, percent - 0.0%
American Indian and Alaska Native alone, percent - 0.0%
Asian alone, percent - 2.0%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone, percent - 1.0%
Two or More Races, percent - 4.0%
Hispanic or Latino, percent - 7.0%
White alone, not Hispanic or Latino, percent - 81.0%
Growing up in Utah, it’s like you’re in a bubble. Barely any diversity, the Church controls the government, and behind-the-back racism and discrimination is the norm. It’s a state I’m very glad I was able to escape.
Yeah with any situation in Utah or with Mormons can always be counted on to be really racist. It might have something to do with how incredibly racist Brigham Young was even in the context of his time.
What a tragedy. As much as I feel for the kid who committed the murders and feel the neglect he suffered from his parents contributed to this situation, he still made the choice to murder four of his peers and had the presence of mind to realize that was wrong and what the consequences would be. I don’t know that I think he should spend literally his entire life in prison, but I definitely don’t think he should get to spend any of the productive period of his life free. He killed four people in cold blood. They’re dead–they don’t get to have lives. I wouldn’t like to see him go free, even with the best behavior, before the age of 60. If he reforms, let him live his twilight years free, but he shouldn’t get to have a life like everyone else. No matter how hard his childhood was, he doesn’t get to take that out on others by ending their lives and get forgiven for it.
Now, the parents–well, I’d be willing to tolerate involuntary sterilization for the both of them and very lengthy prison sentences as well.
This is a common misconception. It’s significantly more expensive to sentence someone to death than to sentence them to life in prison due to the extensive appeals process involved in a capital sentence. There is also the issue of wrongful convictions. Not every situation is as cut and dry as this and there is no perfect means of preventing innocent people from being executed in a justice system with capital punishment. Just because something feels good at a visceral level doesn’t mean it makes sense in practice or is true justice.
Life is the death penalty but humane. The actual death penalty is too flawed to ever be used. If you ever give the state the power to kill it will always be used against minorities, the poor, and innocent. This case is more cut and dry than most, but there’s still never a 100% chance that you have the right criminal and there’s nothing more final than death. Until the state can create a equal punishment for themselves when they get it wrong, there should be no executions.
Exactly. Having to live with what you’ve done and in a place like that is a lot worse than having a few moments of fear and maybe pain before you die and it’s over just like that.
I would support the death penalty in certain cases if our justice system wasn't a total shit show that wrongfully convicts people all the fucking time.
Yes. War, the death penalty are state sanctioned murder. I get self defense, survival instinct is strong. And locking someone away, especially a child is also abhorrent. We really need to focus on rehabilitation, treatment for ACEs and the ill they breed. But I’m American and the outlier, in my corner of the area.
We wipe out other forms of life all the time, be it by accident, wilfull neglicence or malice. Why not bacteria/viruses. Gotta have some good with the bad, right?
How so? He had a Democratic majority in Congress his entire term. Filibuster wasn’t as widespread as it is now.
He micromanaged his staff, and never got a good grip on the sausage making process in Washington. He was also more in bed with Evangelicals than people notice today. His sister is a pretty big reason why Evangelicals are so politically active these days.
He’s a pretty great human being all round. He sucked as President, and it has little to do with the GOP.
The same shit that happens today, happened back then too.
When Rs have a majority, they go nuts and pass all types of shit.
When Ds have a majority, there’s always X number of Dems willing to take the publicity hit to oppose progress. Where X equals the amount of majority they have.
Like, we got 52 D senators, 3 won’t vote. We have 57, 8 won’t. If we had 75, 26 won’t.
You never realized how big of a coincidence it is that there’s always enough to stop progress? It’s because there’s a shit ton that are oppose it, they just won’t say it because then they get replaced.
That’s not what was going on here. He had no idea how to negotiate with his own party. He micromanaged to the point that he insisted on approving use of the White House tennis court for the first 6 months in office. He could never let go of petty details, and it kept him from prioritizing important decisions.
The most interesting thing about this result is that it was achieved thru behavioral change (masking, hand washing, distancing, isolation), and not technologic advancement. We have the capability, with cooperation to significantly alter the infectious disease landscape.
Human beings, when working together, quite literally are the strongest biological force on Earth. There is very little we can’t do when working together.
How can a national park be ‘closed’? Do they build a giant wall around them in the great 'merica to isolate the nature inside? Do they make you pay for a ticket like in an amusement park?
