FlyingSquid , in Child rapist Steven van de Velde weeps in first interview since Olympics outrage
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And he still hasn’t apologized for what he did.

SeaJ , (edited )

He also doesn’t consider himself a pedophile despite grooming and raping a child multiple times.

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

He was proclaimed innocent of grooming, because he didn’t groom her. Please familiarise yourself with basic facts of the case before spouting nonsense.

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

He’s apologized repeatedly in the past, calling it his greatest mistske. What are you on about?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Please do show evidence of this.

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

He literally said it during the interview this article is about.

And I quote:

I did something wrong 10 years ago. I have to take that. But hurting the people around me, whether it be Matthew (his teammate) or my wife or my child… that goes too far for me.

And from a previous interview in 2018 (in Dutch): nos.nl/l/2240281

I did what I did. I can’t reverse it, so I’ll have to live with the consequences. You may judge me, of course. It is the biggest mistake of my life.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Neither of those are apologies. I am really concerned about what you think apologies are and what you think is acceptable for an adult to do to a child.

njm1314 ,

Good Lord neither of those are apologies come the fuck on.

Dkarma ,

Where is the apology. Admitting wrongdoing is not an apology, bud.

shadowedcross , in Child rapist Steven van de Velde weeps in first interview since Olympics outrage

Well maybe you shouldn’t have raped a child, dipshit.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Multiple times. And only got a year in prison for it.

some_guy ,

Multiple was unknown to me. Even worse. And this article was the first time I saw that he travelled to another country to do so. Wow. I wonder how this has affected the victim.

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

The victim gave consent (as far as a 12-year old can do that of course). She in fact started self-harming because he got convicted and still does not regret or feel bad about the encounters to this day, other than the negative effects it had on Steven.

njm1314 ,

Which is zero. A 12-year-old can give zero consent. Yes, when a child is groomed and brainwashed by her rapist they tend to do things like react badly when the rapist is caught. That’s why it’s so important for them to have the care they need. It’s not important to have weirdos online defend their rapists.

Chip_Rat , in Mom fights back in grizzly bear attack: ‘I’m not ready to leave my daughter’

Where did this happen, and what kind of bears?? Is it just me or is this article lacking…

Where is Yukon Canada? And is Ontario Canada inside it? Or was she visiting from our of town? This Grizzly attack was black bears?

Chip_Rat ,

ctvnews.ca/…/yukon-woman-narrowly-escapes-bear-at…

This article explains what happened and where and what kind of bears…

Zannsolo , in Mom fights back in grizzly bear attack: ‘I’m not ready to leave my daughter’

Sounds like the dog scared and probably chased the smaller threats off and left her to get mauled by the big guy. I’m kinda surprised it didn’t stay closer to the lady and scuffle with the big boy.

ImADifferentBird , in Donald Trump says he will flee to Venezuela if he loses election [Newsweek]
@ImADifferentBird@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’d ask him to promise, but I know what his promises are worth.

InternetUser2012 ,

Yeah, there’s no way. However, if he said if he wins he knows Kamala is going to flee the country, I would 100% bet everything I own he’s taking off. Projection is real.

capt_wolf , in Starbucks’ CEO is out. Chipotle’s Brian Niccol is taking over
@capt_wolf@lemmy.world avatar

Starbucks is sugary, trash water. Brew your own coffee at home. Costs way less, tastes much better, and it’s significantly healthier compared to the flavored milk they sell.

PlantJam ,

And if you make cold brew in advance, it’s saves a lot of time in the morning. It’s even good heated up in the microwave, but I drink it iced year round.

jwt ,

But if I brew my own coffee at home, how will people know I’m writing a screenplay?

capt_wolf , (edited )
@capt_wolf@lemmy.world avatar

In my experience, anyone I’ve ever known who is earnestly writing a book or a screenplay doesn’t shut up about it, regardless of whether they go to Starbucks or not.

quicklime ,

Meanwhile, what they serve at Chipotle is not worth even half of what they charge for it.

CmdrShepard42 ,

Yeah both these companies have been run into the ground in my opinion. They’re just coasting on inertia at this point.

corsicanguppy ,

I don’t have the machine at home. Or that other machine. Nor can I make a fern leaf with the milk. And where’m I gonna get a lip piercing at this time of night? Be reasonable, man.

SeaJ , in Donald Trump says he will flee to Venezuela if he loses election [Newsweek]

I’m sure Maduro will welcome him with open arms.

This is slightly at odds with many Republican legislators because many people fleeing Venezuela are firmly on the right. When DeSantis did his whole transporting Texas asylum seekers, one of the main issues was that money for that was not to be used for people fleeing Venezuela.

photonic_sorcerer , in SpaceX accused of dumping mercury into Texas waters for years
@photonic_sorcerer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Y’all actually need to read the article before commenting:

One of the major initial concerns—the wastewater’s mercury content—stems from what experts believe may be egregious typos within SpaceX’s records. Lab reports indicate polluted waters contained 0.113 μg/L of mercury, while subsequent summaries appear to misplace the decimal point to show 113 μg/L. If the former measurement is accurate, then Starship’s wastewater contains roughly 1/17th the legal mercury limit.

SpaceX has done some shady shit regarding their environmental practices, but this claim about mercury just ain’t it. Some of the comments further down go into more detail.

DarkCloud ,

That says if the former figure is accurate… But if it’s the latter? Then it’s 100 times more than 1/17th which would mean it’s waaay more than the legal limit… So it depends in which is the typo.

photonic_sorcerer ,
@photonic_sorcerer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m going to assume a lab report is more accurate than its summary.

Doomsider ,

I am going to assume letting companies police their own pollutants is fucking stupid.

sunzu2 , in Disney wants wrongful death of LI doctor lawsuit tossed over Disney+ streaming terms

How is this not a criminal matter

thisbenzingring ,

It could be a difficult thing to prove who is at fault, and the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the staff at the restaurant were at fault individually.

sunzu2 ,

Like alec?

BossDj ,

Honestly, my brain went straight to, “Someone along that chain is one of those people who think allergy sufferers are just weak complainy people and faking it”

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

Yeah this is unfortunately a very common line of thinking. Restaurant workers get tired of people claiming allergies just because they don’t like something. And over time, they get lax with food safety practices, or even outright ignore them because they think the person is just faking it.

Even worse, some people will intentionally “test” allergies to see if the person is faking. Because they genuinely don’t believe the person, and want to prove they’re lying.

My buddy is deathly allergic to peanuts, and has had several reactions after explicitly clarifying with the server that there were no nuts in the food. And he actually ended up breaking up with a girl because her mom tested his allergy. She added peanut powder to some brownies she baked, then told him they were nut-free. He found out that his ex knew about it, (and didn’t warn him), which is what led to the breakup.

evergreen , in The Untold Hunt for a Sex Trafficker

What a horrendous situation. Some people are just animals… and I feel like I’m insulting some animals a bit by saying that. I googled, but was unable to find any info on whether he’s been to trial or sentenced yet. Hopefully soon.

Rhaedas , in Mom fights back in grizzly bear attack: ‘I’m not ready to leave my daughter’

I don't like the fact that they killed bears they found in the area afterwards. She admitted she was in a bad place to be, and her dog might have triggered the initial attack (but did a good boy and helped scare off more). So bears that were being bears died because of this. I started reading this as a happy story of survival, but now I'm just glad she managed to live and the rest sucks.

shalafi ,

Had a black bear wander in my dog door a few years back. The state biologist concerned with bears ordered it euthanized. I could tell she was heartbroken, but that’s procedure in such a case.

The contractor who works for the state set a trap in my yard for a week. Didn’t get him! Haven’t had a bear in the hood since.

Rhaedas ,

I do get the reasoning behind such a policy to prevent an animal exposed to behavior from repeating it, but it sucks so much death came from a simple mistake. Especially since the bears weren't even straying outside their normal area and just doing what you'd expect them to do.

tamal3 ,

Golly, bears where i live get into houses and trash all the time. To my knowledge none have been killed for it, it’s just accepted that people need to lock up their houses.

A bear also recently opened my car door, ate what it could find, and left with no damage to the car (other than a next level quantity of mud).

The differences in policies between cities are interesting.
