Toneswirly , (edited ) in As families searched, a Texas medical school cut up their loved ones

Lol Texas. Please *secede from the union already.

PyroNeurosis ,

Right. I’ve seen this a bunch lately and I know it’s not on you or nothing but:

Secede - to withdraw from a union.

Cede - to surrender or relinquish.

Toneswirly ,

Suceed?

aeronmelon , in Boeing strike: bosses bruised, blindsided and on brink of crisis

Time for a government bailout!

son_named_bort , in Is ‘Judge Judy’ on the Supreme Court? Lack of civics knowledge leads to colleges filling the gap

Don’t give Trump any ideas.

9tr6gyp3 , in We're losing our digital history. Can the Internet Archive save it?

Honestly, this is a good thing imo. Let data rot. Let data die. Let data be destroyed. This way it won’t contribute to the data pollution problem that we are in.

ravhall ,

Can we please start with stackoverflow? If I see one more 20 year old code snippet I’m going to vomit.

Telodzrum , in Is ‘Judge Judy’ on the Supreme Court? Lack of civics knowledge leads to colleges filling the gap

Not shocking, the level of understanding the average person on here has on the topic of civics is downright depressing.

FelixCress , in RFK Jr says he faces federal investigation for beheading whale

He has done WHAT?

givesomefucks ,

What’s crazier is I’m pretty sure he just started talking about it…

Like, it wasn’t a scandal that came out.

RFK jr just casually told someone in an interview one time he found a dead whale on a beach. So he did the common sense thing: got a chainsaw out of his minivan, cut the head off, strapped it to the minivan, then drove home so he could “study” it.

Pretty sure it’s because he just brought up dumping the dead bear in Central Park, and when people said that was weird, RFK told the whale story to make the bear story seem normal?

I don’t know, you’d have to ask the worm why RFK thought any of this was interview material.

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

I believe it was his daughter recounting the story in an interview. She talked about how grossed out she was sitting in the back seat while decomposition juices trickled into the car.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

She and the rest of the family he took with him for no good reason had to wear tarps with breathing holes to stop the, as she called it, “whale juice” from getting all over them.

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll never complain about one of my dad’s impromptu road trips ever again

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Right? I went on some bad family trips, but I never had to deal with whale juice because my lawyer dad wants to study a whale skull.

Badabinski , (edited )

what the fuck

What is it with this fucking man and disgusting dead animals‽ Like, this was before the brain worm started driving ffs! I really thought the brain worm was the reason this dude was so fucking crazy, but apparently not! It must be Rosemary Kennedy's ghost, tormenting the family for what they did.

EDIT: Jesus I just can't get over this. They're dead man you don't have to fuck with them just leave them alone and enjoy your time on the beach with your family or in Central Park throwing dirt clods at the drifters like you want to

just don't fucking touch the dead animals anymore

EDIT: I've done some more research and have learned a few things

  1. the US education system sucks at telling recent history because i just learned about RFK's assassination
  2. maybe he's all crazy and fucked up because his uncle and dad were assassinated when he was 9 and 14
  3. maybe he's all crazy and fucked up because he was doing fucking heroin from the age of 15 (jesus what does that do to a developing brain)
  4. maybe he's all crazy and fucked up because his family was probably neglectful (and possibly abusive) as hell because he certainly acted like a neglected and spoiled teenager (he was suspected of committing a bunch of crimes and shit with other kids)

like, I just want to understand what his fucking problem is. It was easy when it was the brain worm. I view him as a bit dangerous which is probably why I'm latching onto this and trying to understand his motivations. Dangerous people are easier to handle emotionally if you know why they're dangerous and what they want.

Asidonhopo ,

Yeah when you consider who he’s related to and what he’s been through he seems almost well-adjusted. Coulda turned out a lot crazier for sure. I mean they pretty much tried to create an American royal family, look at the results from history in that kind of aggressive human experimentation, could have been a lot worse. Better luck next time, Bene Gesserits.

Just go away.

FlyingSquid , in RFK Jr says he faces federal investigation for beheading whale
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Good. I’m tired of “when you’re rich, they let you do it.”

Weird as fuck asshole not only drove over to an island to cut off a dead whale’s head because he supposedly likes to study animal skulls (he’s a lawyer, not a scientist, so what is he studying?), he brought his kids along for the ride for no apparent reason.

ravhall ,

Obviously the worm ate too much. His kids were probably just anxiously playing along not to piss him off. Who knows what kind of mental and physical abuse that fucker is capable of

ColeSloth ,

That was pre worm, I believe.

His daughter was unfazed by her account, this kind of unhinged shit was a common occurrence for them. I bet there is a lot of other weird stories like that.

gedaliyah , in Florida hospitals ask immigrants about their legal status. Texas will try it next
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

People are not dumb.

Just because the law doesn’t require an answer now doesn’t mean it won’t. Immigration statuses last decades, so people have to make decisions that protect themselves through multiple administrations and changing political trends.What will the governor’s office do with this information? What about the next governor? They could station agents outside hospitals with higher rates of non-citizen patients. They could change the laws protecting patient confidentiality for non-citizens, and access those records (HIPPA is a law, not a civil right). Remember when we believed that abortion care and contraception was safe forever?

These people are fixated on punishing immigrants and if we don’t stop them now, they will just keep pushing the line further and further.

some_guy ,

I’ve know since the Bush admin that my name would be on a list someday. This just makes it a little bit closer. I’m a cis white male, fwiw, and I’m still anticipating the day when my thoughts make me an enemy.

Ragdoll_X , (edited ) in Florida hospitals ask immigrants about their legal status. Texas will try it next
@Ragdoll_X@lemmy.world avatar

Remember that former Guantanamo inmates have accused DeSantis of aiding in and enjoying torture. Cruelty is the point. DeSantis and others like him simply take pleasure in making as many immigrants as possible suffer, whether they are legal or not.

TachyonTele , in 14 pro-Trump electors linked to efforts to reverse his 2020 loss are back for 2024

David Kallman is an attorney for one of Michigan’s 2020 pro-Trump electors, Choate, who is returning in 2024 as a potential Republican elector while facing eight felony counts, including conspiracy to commit forgery.

How can these people still be electors? This is ridiculous.

riskable , in Florida hospitals ask immigrants about their legal status. Texas will try it next
@riskable@programming.dev avatar

Conservatives: This is how the zombie apocalypse starts… With one person refusing to let medical professionals know about their problem.

I’d use a very real scenario of immigrants and “merely visiting” foreigners who get sick spreading any given disease (e.g. How do you think we ended up with Zika in Florida?) but I know conservatives aren’t interested in reality. Even JD Vance knows that in order to get conservatives attention you need to promote fiction.

Limonene , in As families searched, a Texas medical school cut up their loved ones

It seems in Texas, if you cannot afford to pay a funeral home to claim your loved one’s corpse, then the corpse will be sold for parts, to raise the necessary money to dispose of it. And you won’t get a funeral.

Rentlar , (edited ) in Boeing strike: bosses bruised, blindsided and on brink of crisis

Honestly, I won’t hold it against IAM leader Holden too much. Boeing would stall and give shitty and completely worthless offers, then at the last minute double the largest point of contention (wage), so it looked fine from the lens of bargaining trade-offs.

Still, the workers are right to put this offer into the trash bin, sending a clear message to IAM leaders they have far more leverage, and to Boeing management that union members have lost all patience for their penny-pinching.

lolcatnip , in Florida hospitals ask immigrants about their legal status. Texas will try it next

The cruelty is the point.

Reverendender ,

We know. Get some new material.

lolcatnip ,

It’s not “material”, it’s my sincere belief. I’ll stop when they stop proving me right.
