This is hands down one of the most depressing articles I’ve read in recent memory.
Not that worse things haven’t happened recently, just that the people in this article are despicable in a way that leaves me feeling defeated. Christ, not a single woman who needed help in that article got help, and the people put in place to help them told them “don’t show off your shoulders, slut” and then intentionally filed it away in a manner that shows as “no sexual harassment complaints since 2001”. Fuckinf hell
Prison guard Union. Man that’s a depressing fucking phrase isn’t it. I mean police unions alone are disgusting, but this is even another level. I guess it’s just two ends of the same nightstick. One Union to dismantle and Destroy real unions, the other Union to imprison those people who are in actual unions.
This is it. Republicans doubling down on authoritarianism.
This is the wind we needed. JD Vance confirms that Trump’s gonna cut off Ukrainian aid and a lot of other important issues. This is a huge mistake for Trump. Trump needed someone (like Pence) who could be seen as a kinder gentler kind of conservative. Not a firebrand like JD Vance.
For a certain class of voters who might not care about those issues (which I will agree are all actually very important) - point out how he’s an Ivy league educated elite, whose military service was being a PR officer, and who’s said things like this about the working class whites he supposedly speaks for
People talk about hard work all the time in places like Middletown. You can walk through a town where 30 percent of the young men work fewer than twenty hours a week and find not a single person aware of his own laziness.
The guy is the exact sort of elite phony that ought to piss off Trump’s core supporters if anyone could get them to realize it
It seems you don't understand: people know who their chosen deities actually are, they simply don't care, as long as they feel they advance their own agendas.
To paraphrase margery tyrell, “He doesn’t care about the consequences because he doesn’t intend to suffer them.”
Trump has fallen ass backwards into a perpetual get out of jail free card. Is it any wonder he acts with impunity when events time after time prove that he is effectively immune from all but the most trivial inconveniences?
I'm an '80s kid and definitely care about Regan and his impact. He was president for a large chunk of my childhood. I remember some of the later times he was on the news. His impact has forever changed American politics.
We sat around, even when I was young, watching the news every night with my family whilst eating. I can tell you I remember some things from the end of his presidency. Right after it, when the Berlin came down, I remember watching the news about it as we were actually at my grandparent's house for dinner that night. On the other hand, I don't remember the challenger explosion even though I was in gradeschool at the time. Maybe I've just forgotten about it as an adult now in my 40s.
We also had mock elections in gradeschool with the actual presidential candidates. I did misunderstand it and my parents refused to believe, as I did, that I had actually voted and found it hilarious.
Ah, those kids better be careful. It’s illegal to not be able to afford a house (not /s). Straight to jail if you ask me. Or just get a cop to shoot them to save some money in the state budget. /s
Hardly a threatened species. Both parties love to support law enforcement. One just hides it behind sound bites and virtue signaling. Next door in Oregon, state dems overrode the will of the people when we decriminalized drug possession in favor of funding treatment centers. The party refused to disperse any of the funds nearly four years after the ballot initiative passed and have now recriminalized drug possession and funneled that money toward police and prisons.
But I think that’s the point. He’s a nobody yes-man who won’t exercise any influence that could challenge Trump. Learned that lesson with the last pick, who wouldn’t even commit some light treason to illegally keep Trump in power.
I think you underestimate how well-known he is, especially to Republicans. He is definitely a Trump yes-man and always has been, but he is not an unknown at all.
He’s a completely corrupt piece of shit that I’m sure they didn’t vet properly since Trump gets what he wants, so expect all kinds of skeletons to start coming out. Could even be some literal ones.
Maybe not “always has been,” as at one point he said Trump would be “America’s Hitler.”
But unlike most of us who would probably not want to work for someone you personally think could be Hitler, he’s done the normal GOP thing and flipped right over for the game of it all.
Apparently most of these are from 2016, which feels like a fucking life time ago. Had to look up the time-line of his “career”.
He came to prominence with his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which describes his upbringing in Middletown and his family’s Appalachian values. It became a New York Times bestseller and attracted significant press attention during the 2016 United States presidential election. Originally, Vance was a critic of Trump and in 2016 wrote a critical piece in The Atlantic against him, but he later came to support him. Vance launched his first political campaign for Ohio’s Senate seat in 2021 and won the Republican nomination after being endorsed by Trump. He defeated Democratic nominee Tim Ryan in the general election.
A whole network of family and friends stepped in to raise him when his parents fell apart, and the generosity of scholarships and government grants for the economically disadvantaged paid his way through a Yale education, all so he could turn around and write a book about how poor people are actually lazy and just need to tug those bootstraps harder and start hitting their kids again
This dude seems to be pretty sharp and is a huge threat. Him and his Peter Theil buddies are working hard to outright destroy democracy. I wouldn’t write this guy off as a yes-man.
