Objection , in Saudi Arabia Threatened to Sell Off Europe’s Bonds If EU Seized Russian Assets

If the Saudis disinvested from the dollar and started selling oil in yuan, it would severely weaken US soft power around the world. At the same time, seizing the assets would remove a bargaining chip from potential peace talks. And those assets likely wouldn’t be enough for Ukraine to win anyway.

Turns out when you steal other countries’ assets (as with Venezuela), other countries stop trusting you with their money and start trusting other countries (like China) with it instead. If they wanna speedrun losing a second cold war, that’s the way to go.

Poach ,

Lol no one is trusting China and their heavily manipulated currency

DragonTypeWyvern ,

You think the USD isn’t manipulated?

Num10ck ,

the global market has decided that your whataboutisms are wrong. theres no currency on earth that is more reliable than the USD. it’s FAR from perfect to be fair, but it sets the bar.

when there is a stablecoin that is worth trillions of dollars, things might change.

DragonTypeWyvern , (edited )

Ok buddy.

Just FYI? It’s not a whataboutism when you’re already directly comparing two things. That’s just how comparisons work.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

A lot of rent-a-cops are regular cops off-duty, so I wouldn’t be so sure.

thedirtyknapkin ,

i wouldn’t say a lot. you’d be amazed how massive the private security industry is. it’s mostly shit jobs that pay pile 15/hr for you to watch cameras and occasionally scan little wall dots to prove you walked down a hall.

my old roommate did this kind of security for a different building in Milwaukee. none of his coworkers were cops, nor were they trained in any meaningful way.

Makeitstop ,

I knew a guy who had masters degree in philosophy that worked as a security guard. Turns out that the job market isn’t great for philosophers.

Cosmonauticus ,

Why didn’t he teach philosophy, continuing the cycle?

sigmaklimgrindset ,

I’m surprised he didn’t get a marketing or communications job, philosophy is a no brainer in those fields. I guess it depends on the undergraduate degree too.

samus12345 ,
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

Not much different than regular cops, then.

PersnickityPenguin ,

Our security guard spends most of his time chasing away fentanyl addicts shooting up inside our elevator and cleaning up poop from them after they devour tubs and tubs of ice cream (they poop in our parking garage stairway every single day).

Also, calling the police and helping to coordinate cleanup in the daily car break ins we have at the office. My boss had his truck windows smashed 5 times since 2021.

So yes, some security officers actually do real work. Ours doesn’t even carry a gun and said he would not physically interact with anyone unless someone’s life was on the line.

ipkpjersi ,

I would say their qualified immunity shouldn’t apply to their off-duty actions, but I wouldn’t be so sure, and also I’m not American.

abracaDavid ,

Off duty cops get a waaaay higher wage than regular security guards. Most security guards are paid around $14-$20 an hour from what I’ve seen in my state.

A lot of companies are too cheap to pay for the off duty cops.

unmagical , in Senate Republicans block Democratic bill codifying Roe v. Wade abortion protections

Ah the old “political stunt” excuse thrown around EVERY TIME a politician does their job and engages in politics.

deaf_fish ,

Everything is political. Likewise Everything is a political stunt.

Political stunts that remove the right to have an abortion are bad stunts. Political stunts that give the right to have an abortion are good stunts.

nondescripthandle ,

To be fair, I remember a few short years ago Pelosi not letting minimum wage be voted on the floor because since she thought there was no way it would pass it was nothing more than a stunt and it would hurt the movement because people will get tired of voting for it. Why doesn’t that apply here or why was she lying to us then?

Democrats are spineless when it comes to things that may impact rich people even slightly and we’re just lucky no one found a way to make billions off of making abortion illegal.

unmagical ,

Everything’s political, especially on the Hill. Doing or not doing something as a reaction to a “political stunt” is just a cover for not having a valid reason. People by and large want access to reproductive healthcare, just like they also by and large want access to enough money to address their needs of survival, but inevitably some politician recognizing that will result in others screaming “stunt” rather than explaining why the men in Washington get to choose what women do with their bodies and why we necessarily have to have a permanent vulnerable underclass.

nondescripthandle ,

Sounds like when it’s rich people money on the line those ‘men in Washington’ include top Democrats like Pelosi was.

verdantbanana , (edited )
@verdantbanana@lemmy.world avatar

now that abortion access in certain states have been limited just like with other rights that have devolved into a state’s rights issue people have to have gas, food, and lodging to access extra demographic rights

a PA box which has extra costs compared to a PO box is also required to access demographic rights as well as other hidden costs

so they did find a way

not to mention fundraising for and against it makes a dick ton of money

and it is making people criminals to access these demographics rights

the megacorp prison glomerate will make a shit load as well so the dissidents can have access to basic toiletries, communication with family and friends

next four years are going to suck either way and salt on the wound is Biden’s crimes bill will come back to haunt everyone combined with these latest assaults to our democracy

all adding up

They think that if there is no Palestine, there will be no Palestinians.

That tactic didn’t work out so well with the Kurds. Or the Tibetans. Or the Tuareg.

Or any of these other groups:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stateless_nation#List_of_St…

novibe ,

Most of those “stateless nations” are concentrated in a state or sub-national division, that mostly corresponds to their traditional homeland.

Expelling all Palestinians from Palestine would be a blow to their nation. Jewish people took millennia to rebuild a nation, and it only happened because of extreme circumstances.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The Romani have been wandering since being expelled from India. They still are a people. You can kill a state, you can take the land, but you can’t kill an idea.

novibe ,

They are a people, but not a nation. There isn’t any movement that unifies them internationally. I mean just that if the Palestinians lose their land completely, they might indeed end up like the Roma. And I mean, they are to this day some of the worst treated people in the world.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They have been working to have their own nation since the 1950s.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanistan

novibe ,

But it never got anywhere. I’m not trying to diss Roma people or anything, I’m just trying to say that the Palestinians being expelled from their land in a diaspora is a bad thing!!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It hasn’t gotten anywhere yet. But the idea will not die, just like the idea of Palestine won’t die.

Of course it’s a bad thing. No one is suggesting anything otherwise.

catloaf ,

They don’t really need to exterminate the Palestinians. They just need to kill enough that they can colonize the rest of Palestine. By that metric, it worked out pretty well against those other groups.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Apart from the fact that many of those groups have been fighting guerilla wars for years.
